A full finance settlement is when you pay off a car finance agreement in one lump sum before its scheduled end date, clearing the balance, stopping future interest, and — on a hire purchase deal — transferring ownership of the vehicle to you. To do it, you ask your lender for a settlement figure, review the amount, and pay it within the validity window the lender quotes.1CarFinance247. What Is a Settlement Figure
What the Settlement Figure Is
The settlement figure is not the sum of your remaining monthly payments. It is a separately calculated amount made up of the outstanding capital balance, interest accrued to the settlement date, and any fees the lender is entitled to charge.1CarFinance247. What Is a Settlement Figure Because you are paying early and will not owe future interest, the figure is usually lower than the total you would pay by running the agreement to term.
Borrowers often confuse the settlement figure with the outstanding balance. The outstanding balance is what you would pay in total if you continued every scheduled monthly payment. The settlement figure strips out the interest you would have paid during that remaining period and applies a rebate, then adds back a smaller amount of deferred interest and any permitted fees.2Santander Consumer UK. Settlement Figures Explained The gap between the two numbers is the interest you save by settling early.
How Lenders Work Out the Figure
In the UK the calculation follows the actuarial method set out in the Consumer Credit (Early Settlement) Regulations 2004.3Stellantis Financial Services. Early Settlement Calculation The lender starts with the current capital balance, adds interest to the settlement date, and then adds “deferred interest.” That deferment period is 28 days for agreements with an original term of 12 months or less, and 58 days for longer agreements.4LEVC Financial Services. Early Settlement Explanation Leaflet The deferment exists because the regulations assume you will need a short window to arrange payment after receiving the quote.
One reason the number can feel higher than expected is that monthly payments do not split evenly between interest and principal. Early in an agreement, a larger share of each payment goes toward interest. As the balance shrinks, more of each payment chips away at capital.2Santander Consumer UK. Settlement Figures Explained Settling very early in the term saves proportionally more than settling near the end, when most of the interest has already been paid.
Your Right to Settle Early and the Fee Caps
Under Section 94 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, a borrower on a regulated consumer credit agreement has the right to pay off the debt in full at any time by giving notice to the creditor and paying the settlement amount.5UK Government. Consumer Credit Act 1974, Section 94 The same section covers partial early settlement. For most agreements the notice does not need to be in writing (those secured on land are the exception).
Under Section 97 the lender must, on request, supply a statement showing the amount needed to clear the debt and how it was calculated. If the lender fails to comply, it cannot enforce the agreement while the default continues.6UK Government. Consumer Credit Act 1974, Part VII — Early Payment by Debtor
Lenders can charge compensation for early settlement under Section 95A, but within strict limits. The fee cannot exceed 1% of the amount repaid early if more than a year remains on the agreement, or 0.5% if a year or less remains, and the charge must be “fair and objectively justified.”7UK Government. Hire Purchase and PCP Are Not the Same
On a hire purchase (HP) agreement the finance company owns the vehicle until every payment has been made. Paying the settlement figure in full transfers legal ownership to you outright.1CarFinance247. What Is a Settlement Figure
Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) agreements are structured differently. They include a deferred balloon payment representing the car’s guaranteed future value, due at the end of the term if you want to keep the car. The early settlement figure on a PCP typically includes that balloon.10Carmoola. Calculate Settlement Car Finance The result can be a settlement figure much larger than borrowers expect, because remaining capital, interest, and the balloon are bundled into one amount.11Carsa. A boundary to note: voluntary termination under Section 99 of the Act is a separate right, not early settlement. If you have paid at least 50% of the total amount payable, you can hand the car back and walk away, but you do not keep the vehicle.12Cinch. Requesting and Paying the Settlement Figure
The process is broadly the same across UK lenders:
- Contact the lender. Most finance companies accept requests online, by phone, or by post, and some offer self-service through their website.4LEVC Financial Services. Early Settlement Explanation Leaflet
- Review the figure. The lender provides a written settlement letter or statement showing the amount and how it was calculated. Requesting the figure does not commit you to paying it; you can choose to continue with your existing schedule instead.13Citizens Advice. Paying Off a Credit Agreement Early
- Pay within the validity window. After the lender receives your request you have 28 days to pay the quoted amount, though some lenders quote a shorter validity of 14 days. If the window expires you need to request a new figure, since interest continues to accrue daily.13Citizens Advice. Paying Off a Credit Agreement Early14Cinch. How to Settle Car Finance
- Keep paying monthly until you have written confirmation. Continue your regular direct debits until the lender confirms the agreement is fully settled, so you are not recorded as being in arrears. Any overpayment is typically refunded.4LEVC Financial Services. Early Settlement Explanation Leaflet
Partial Settlement If You Cannot Clear the Whole Balance
Rather than paying off the entire debt, you can make a lump-sum partial payment to reduce it. In the UK this right is set out in Section 94(3) of the Consumer Credit Act.5UK Government. Consumer Credit Act 1974, Section 94 You notify the lender in writing and pay within 28 days.13Citizens Advice. Paying Off a Credit Agreement Early
After the partial payment is applied, the lender recalculates the remaining interest and gives you a choice: keep the same monthly payment amount and finish the loan sooner, or keep the original term length and reduce each monthly payment.15First Response Finance. What It Does to Your Credit
In the UK, settling a regulated agreement early by paying the full figure generally does not harm a credit score and can demonstrate responsible financial management, provided all prior payments were made on time.16Marsh Finance. Car Finance Settlements Explained
In the US, paying off a car loan early typically causes a slight, temporary dip in the borrower’s credit score because closing an installment account affects credit mix and reduces the number of open accounts.17Experian. If You Are in the US
US auto loan prepayment is governed by individual loan contracts and state law rather than a single federal statute. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises reviewing your Truth in Lending Act disclosures carefully, because some lenders include prepayment penalty clauses designed to recoup interest they would lose on an early payoff.20Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Can I Prepay My Loan at Any Time Without Penalty
Thirty-six states and Washington, D.C. permit auto lenders to charge prepayment penalties for loans with terms of 60 months or less. By law, lenders cannot charge prepayment penalties on auto loans with terms of 61 months or longer.21Experian. How to Avoid Paying Prepayment Penalty A handful of states prohibit prepayment penalties entirely or under most circumstances. Maine, for example, allows consumers to prepay any consumer credit transaction in full or in part at any time “without penalty, except for minimum charges as permitted by law.”22Maine State Legislature. A Note on “Full and Final” Settlement Offers
A “full and final settlement offer” is a different concept from the standard early settlement above. In that scenario a borrower in financial difficulty proposes to pay a lump sum less than the total owed, in exchange for the creditor writing off the balance. Creditors are generally more receptive when accounts are already delinquent, typically at least 90 days past due, and discounts of 40% to 60% are common — though auto loans are secured, so the lender can repossess the vehicle rather than accept a reduced payment.23NerdWallet.
