Form I-797C Notice of Action: Receipt Number, Biometrics, RFEs

Form I-797C, Notice of Action, is the standard letter U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services sends to tell you something has happened with your case. It might confirm that your application was received, schedule a biometrics or interview appointment, tell you your file has been transferred to another office, or notify you that a filing was rejected.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-797C, Notice of Action The notice itself does not approve anything or grant any immigration status. Every I-797C carries a header stating that it does not grant any immigration status or benefit, and that header exists because people confuse it with an approval all the time.

What it does give you is a receipt number and the information you need to track your case and respond to whatever comes next. Read it carefully the day it arrives.

What to Check on the Notice

Receipt Number

The receipt number is a 13-character code: three letters followed by ten digits. The letters correspond to the USCIS office or system handling your case, and common prefixes include EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, MSC, and IOE.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Receipt Number This is your tracking ID for everything that follows: online status checks, service requests, calls to the USCIS Contact Center, and any future correspondence. Write it down somewhere separate from the notice itself.

Notice Date and Received Date

Two dates appear on the notice. The Notice Date is when USCIS generated and mailed the document. The Received Date, also called the Filing Date, is when USCIS considers your application officially submitted. The Filing Date is the one that matters for processing timelines and eligibility calculations, and in a visa-queue case it may establish your priority date.

Priority Date

For family-sponsored or employment-based immigrant petitions, the notice may show a priority date. This date determines when a visa number becomes available to you. For family cases, it is typically the date USCIS received the Form I-130. For employment cases requiring a labor certification, it is the date the Department of Labor accepted that application.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Visa Availability and Priority Dates A visa becomes available when your priority date is earlier than the cutoff for your preference category in the monthly Visa Bulletin.

Your Personal Information

Check your name, date of birth, A-number if listed, and mailing address as soon as the notice arrives. Errors here can send mail to the wrong place, delay background checks, or create mismatches that slow adjudication. If USCIS caused the error, you can submit a typographic error service request through the USCIS e-Request tool using your receipt number.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Typographic Error

Type of Action

The notice states what triggered it. Common labels include receipt, rejection, transfer, reopen, and appointment.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-797C, Notice of Action Each calls for a different response.

Tracking Your Case

USCIS runs a free Case Status Online tool. Enter your 13-character receipt number, omitting any dashes but including any asterisks the notice lists.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Checking Your Case Status Online The tool shows the most recent action and the date it occurred.

For more visibility, create a free USCIS online account (myUSCIS). An online account lets you view most notices USCIS has sent you, respond to Requests for Evidence electronically, send secure messages, reschedule biometrics, and link paper-filed cases in one place.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. What Usually Comes Next After a Receipt Notice

Biometrics Appointment

For most applicants, the next communication is a separate I-797C scheduling a biometrics appointment at an Application Support Center, where USCIS collects fingerprints and photographs for identity verification and background checks. Missing this appointment is one of the fastest ways to derail a case. Under federal regulations, if you do not appear and have not requested a reschedule or notified USCIS of an address change by the appointment time, your application is considered abandoned and will be denied.7eCFR. 8 CFR 103.2 – Submission and Adjudication of Benefit Requests

You can reschedule through your USCIS online account. The self-service tool will not let you reschedule if the appointment is within 12 hours, has already passed, or has been rescheduled twice before. For an appointment that has already passed, contact the USCIS Contact Center directly.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Launches Online Rescheduling of Biometrics Appointments

Requests for Evidence

USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence if your filing was missing documentation or contained inconsistencies. The RFE specifies what is needed and gives you a firm deadline. For most form types the standard response window is 84 calendar days. For Form I-539 (change or extension of nonimmigrant status) and Form I-601A (provisional unlawful presence waiver), the response window is 30 days. Domestic filers get an additional 3 days of mailing time; filers responding from outside the U.S. get 14 additional days.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual Volume 1, Part E, Chapter 6 – Evidence

Do not miss the deadline. If you fail to respond, USCIS can deny the application as abandoned, deny it on the incomplete record, or both.10eCFR. 8 CFR 103.2 – Submission and Adjudication of Benefit Requests There are no extensions. If you have an online account, submitting the RFE response electronically eliminates mailing delays and gives you confirmation of receipt.

Interview Scheduling

Certain applications, including naturalization (N-400) and adjustment of status (I-485), require an in-person interview. After biometrics, USCIS sends another I-797C with the date, time, and location. Bring the interview notice and the documents it lists.

Rejections and Transfers

A rejection is not a denial. When USCIS rejects a filing, the application was never accepted into the system at all. Common reasons include a missing signature, incorrect filing fee, wrong form edition, or mailing to the wrong address. Your fee is returned with the rejected package. Because the application was never officially filed, no case record exists and the filing date is not preserved. You will need to correct the issue and refile, which means a new filing date and possibly a new fee if the schedule has changed.

A transfer notice means USCIS has moved your file from one office to another, usually for workload balancing or jurisdiction. The transfer notice typically includes a new receipt number from the receiving office. Update your records and use the new number for all future status checks. Transfers sometimes add processing time but do not require action from you beyond noting the change.

What the Notice Does Not Authorize

This is where the most consequential mistakes happen. The I-797C is a receipt, not a benefit. It does not approve your application, grant you any immigration status, authorize you to work, or permit you to travel internationally and reenter the United States.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-797C, Notice of Action Working based only on a receipt notice, without separate employment authorization, is unauthorized employment. Traveling abroad without advance parole or another valid travel document while an adjustment of status application is pending can result in that application being considered abandoned.

State and local agencies sometimes accept the notice as supporting evidence for their own programs, but USCIS reminds those agencies that the notice only proves a benefit request was submitted, not that the applicant is eligible for any immigration benefit.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The EAD Renewal Exception

There is one scenario where the notice itself plays a role in work authorization. If you previously held a valid Employment Authorization Document and timely filed a Form I-765 renewal before October 30, 2025 under an eligible EAD category, the I-797C receipt notice serves as evidence that your work authorization is automatically extended for up to 540 days from your EAD’s expiration while the renewal is pending. Eligible categories include refugees, asylees, pending adjustment of status applicants, and spouses of certain E, H-1B, and L-1 visa holders, among others.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Automatic Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Extension

USCIS published an interim final rule ending the 540-day automatic extension for renewal applications filed on or after October 30, 2025.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Interim Final Rule Published Ending the Practice of Automatically Extending Certain EADs If you filed before that date, the extension still applies. If you filed on or after, the automatic extension no longer exists for most categories, though other extensions provided by law (such as OPT STEM extensions for F-1 students and certain TPS-related extensions) may still apply. Verify the current rule before relying on a receipt notice for continued work authorization.

Keeping Your Address Current

Every notice USCIS sends after the first one, biometrics appointments, RFEs, interview notices, decisions, goes to the address on file. Miss the address and you miss the deadline. Federal law requires most noncitizens to report an address change within 10 days of moving.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1305 – Notices of Change of Address The requirement does not apply to A or G visa holders or visa waiver visitors.14U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Alien’s Change of Address Card

You can update through your USCIS online account or by mailing a paper Form AR-11. If you use the online account and have pending cases, enter the receipt number for each pending application so the change is applied to those cases. Updating only your profile may not update the address on the pending filings themselves.15U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address

If the Notice Never Arrives or Gets Lost

Expect a receipt notice within about 30 days of filing at a service center or lockbox. If 60 days pass and nothing has arrived, start with the Case Status Online tool. If no case appears, or a notice was issued but never reached you, submit a non-delivery inquiry through the USCIS e-Request tool. You will need your receipt number if you have it, the filing date, the form type, and your email address.16U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Non-Delivery of Notice There is no fee.

If you never got a receipt number at all, check whether your filing fee payment was cashed or processed. A cashed check strongly suggests USCIS received the application. Contact the USCIS Contact Center with your canceled check or payment confirmation, the form filed, and the mailing date. Keep copies of everything from the beginning, and keep every notice, including old ones, for your records.
