The IRS publishes no official service standard for Form 843 processing time, but most straightforward penalty abatement claims resolve in two to four months, and interest abatement or complex dollar recalculations routinely run six months or longer. What determines where your claim lands in that range is the type of relief you asked for, the strength of the documentation you attached, and whether you filed during peak season.
Typical Processing Times by Claim Type
The IRS does not guarantee a turnaround on Form 843. That said, the pattern across claim types is consistent enough to plan around.
First-time penalty abatement claims move fastest. The IRS evaluates them with automated software called the Reasonable Cause Assistant, which defaults to removing the penalty when the eligibility criteria are met without kicking the file to a human reviewer.1Internal Revenue Service. 20.1.1 Introduction and Penalty Relief For a written request, plan on roughly two to three months.
Reasonable cause penalty abatement takes longer because a person has to read your explanation and weigh the evidence you attached. Three to four months is typical.
Interest abatement is the slowest category. These claims require the IRS to recompute interest across multiple tax periods, and six months or more is common.2IRS. Instructions for Form 843 (Rev. December 2024)
Claims mailed during peak filing season, roughly January through April, tend to sit toward the long end of any estimate. Form 843 competes for staff with the flood of individual returns processed in that same window.
What Actually Slows a Claim Down
Incomplete claims are the single biggest cause of avoidable delay. If the IRS decides it needs more from you, the processing clock stops entirely until your response arrives, and the weeks spent gathering documents don’t count toward the agency’s internal metrics. A slow reply to a request for information is the most reliable way to turn a three-month claim into a year-long wait.
For reasonable cause claims, a vague explanation on Line 7 is not enough. The IRS looks for actual records: hospital or court documents confirming illness with start and end dates, documentation of natural disasters, and copies of any written correspondence with the IRS about the underlying issue.3Internal Revenue Service. Penalty Relief for Reasonable Cause
Interest abatement claims carry the heaviest documentation burden. On Line 8, you have to state the type of tax, when the IRS first notified you of the deficiency, the specific period you want interest removed for, the circumstances of your case, and why leaving the interest in place would be grossly unfair.2IRS. Instructions for Form 843 (Rev. December 2024) A thin Line 8 statement almost guarantees a follow-up letter and another month or two of delay.
Mailing the form to the wrong address adds weeks. Form 843 has no single destination; where it goes depends on the type of claim.4Internal Revenue Service. Where to File (for Form 843) If you were responding to a notice, the return address on that notice is the correct destination. Certified mail with return receipt gives you a filing date you can point to when you call for a status update.
When and How to Check Status
Wait at least six to eight weeks after mailing before you call. Any sooner and the form likely has not been entered into the IRS system, so the representative will have nothing to look up.
Once enough time has passed, call the general inquiry line at 800-829-1040. Have three things in front of you: your Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number, the tax period the claim relates to, and the date you mailed the form. The representative can pull up the centralized database and tell you whether the claim has been logged, is under review, or has been assigned to a specific examiner.
Reading Your IRS Account Transcript
You can also track progress by ordering your IRS account transcript online at IRS.gov. When the IRS acts on an abatement claim, specific transaction codes appear on the transcript, often before the official letter reaches your mailbox.5IRS. Section 8A – Master File Codes
- TC 161 indicates a delinquency penalty abatement.
- TC 271 or TC 277 reflects a failure-to-pay penalty abatement.
- TC 181 indicates a deposit penalty abatement.
- TC 197 or TC 337 shows interest abatement.
If any of these codes appears next to the tax period on your claim, the IRS has processed it in your favor.
When to Escalate to the Taxpayer Advocate Service
If your claim has been sitting well past the normal window with no movement, the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) can step in. TAS generally accepts a case when there has been a delay of more than 30 days beyond normal processing time, or when the IRS missed a date it promised a response by.6Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) Case Criteria TAS will also take a case where the delay is causing economic harm, such as an inability to pay bills or the threat of a lien or levy.
You can reach TAS at 877-777-4778 or through your local Taxpayer Advocate office.
The Six-Month Deemed Denial Rule
If the IRS never acts on your claim, the law eventually treats the silence as a denial. Under 26 U.S.C. ยง 6532, you cannot file a refund suit until six months have passed from the date you filed the claim. Once that six-month period expires without an IRS decision, you have the right to take the matter to federal court without waiting for a formal denial letter.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6532 Periods of Limitation on Suits Most claims never need this route, but the existence of the six-month floor gives you leverage when the IRS has gone quiet.
A Faster Route for Simple Penalty Relief
Not every penalty request requires Form 843 at all. The IRS accepts some penalty relief requests by phone, and when the representative can approve it, you get the answer on the call.8Internal Revenue Service. Penalty Relief Call the toll-free number on the IRS notice, with the notice itself, the specific penalty, and your reasons in hand before you dial.
Phone abatement works best for first-time abatement requests where you have a clean three-year compliance history, because the representative can verify that history on the spot. If the request cannot be approved by phone, you will be told to file Form 843 in writing.8Internal Revenue Service. Penalty Relief For anyone still weighing how to file, the phone route can save months.
