Form 4868 is the IRS application for an automatic six-month tax extension, and filing it by April 15 pushes your federal return deadline to October 15. The word “automatic” is literal: you don’t explain why, and the IRS doesn’t ask. What the form does not do is give you more time to pay. Any tax you owe is still due on the original April 15 deadline, and interest and penalties on unpaid amounts start the next day.1Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return
What the Extension Covers and What It Doesn’t
The six months buy you time to prepare and submit the return. They do not buy you time to pay. Your full tax liability remains due by April 15 regardless of whether you file an extension.1Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return
If you can’t pay the full amount, file the extension anyway and pay what you can. The penalty for filing late without an extension is far steeper than the penalty for paying late with one, so the form is worth submitting even if you can’t send a dollar with it.
For the 2025 tax year, Form 4868 must reach the IRS by April 15, 2026, and a timely filing moves your return deadline to October 15, 2026.2eCFR. 26 CFR 1.6081-4 – Automatic Extension of Time for Filing Individual Income Tax Return3Internal Revenue Service. How to File Form 4868
You have three practical routes, and the electronic ones give you an immediate confirmation of receipt.
Electronic Filing
IRS Free File lets you submit Form 4868 electronically at no cost if your adjusted gross income is $89,000 or less.4Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Tax Filing Season Opens With Several Free Filing Options Available Above that threshold, Free File Fillable Forms is open to all income levels.5Internal Revenue Service. E-file: Do Your Taxes for Free Most commercial tax software also handles the extension. Save the acknowledgment you receive.
Pay and Skip the Form
You can trigger the extension without filing Form 4868 at all. Make a payment through IRS Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or a debit or credit card, and select the option indicating the payment is for an extension. The payment itself is the extension request; no separate form is needed.6Internal Revenue Service. Make an Electronic Payment and Get an Automatic Extension of Time to File If you owe money and plan to send some in anyway, this is the simplest path.
Paper Filing
Paper filers download the form from IRS.gov, fill it out, and mail it to the address in the instructions for their state of residence.7Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return A check or money order goes in the same envelope. Use certified mail or a tracked delivery service, because the IRS does not send a confirmation letter for paper extensions and the postmark or tracking record is your only proof of timely filing.
What Goes on the Form
Form 4868 is a single page. Part I asks for your legal name, current address, and Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. Joint filers add a spouse’s name and SSN, and the extension covers both people.3Internal Revenue Service. Part II is the substantive part. You estimate your total tax liability for the year, subtract payments already made through withholding, estimated tax, or refundable credits, and enter the balance due along with whatever you’re paying with the request. The estimate has to be reasonable based on the information you have. If the IRS later concludes it wasn’t, the agency can void the extension retroactively, and you’ll be treated as if you never filed one.3Internal Revenue Service. Penalties and Interest If You Get It Wrong
The IRS charges two separate penalties, and filing Form 4868 eliminates the more expensive one.
Failure to File
Without a return or an extension by April 15, the penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month the return is late, capped at 25%. If the return is more than 60 days late, a minimum penalty applies: the lesser of $525 or 100% of the unpaid tax.8Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty Even a small balance can produce a real penalty if the deadline is ignored.
Failure to Pay
On any tax not paid by April 15, the IRS adds 0.5% of the unpaid balance per month or partial month, also capped at 25%. If you filed on time (extension counts) and set up an installment agreement, the rate drops to 0.25% per month while that agreement is in place.9Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty
When both penalties apply in the same month, the failure-to-file amount is reduced by the failure-to-pay amount, so the combined rate is 5% rather than 5.5%.8Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty The failure-to-file penalty maxes out after five months; the failure-to-pay penalty keeps running until you hit its cap. This is why filing the extension matters even when you can’t pay: it strips out the bigger of the two charges.
Interest
Interest runs on any unpaid tax starting the day after April 15, compounding daily at a rate the IRS sets quarterly (the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points). For the second quarter of 2026, the underpayment rate for individuals is 6% per year.10Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Bulletin: 2026-8 The rate can shift each quarter, and unlike the penalties, interest has no cap. It keeps compounding until the balance is paid.
Automatic Extensions That Don’t Require Filing
Living Abroad on April 15
U.S. citizens and resident aliens whose main place of business or post of duty is outside the United States and Puerto Rico on April 15 get an automatic two-month extension to file and pay, with no form required. That moves the initial deadline to June 15. Filing Form 4868 from there adds another four months, landing on the same October 15 final date as everyone else. Check the box on line 8 of the form to indicate the out-of-country status.11Internal Revenue Service. Combat Zone Service
Service members in a combat zone receive an automatic extension without filing Form 4868. The extension runs for the time served in the zone, plus 180 days after leaving, plus whatever time remained in the original filing period when the member entered. No interest or penalties accrue during that window. The extension generally covers the spouse as well, and applies to Red Cross workers and certain civilian employees serving under military direction in combat zones.12Internal Revenue Service. Federally Declared Disaster Areas
Taxpayers in a federally declared disaster area typically get automatic filing and payment postponements without doing anything. The IRS uses FEMA damage assessments to identify eligible areas. Coverage extends to anyone whose principal residence or business is in the zone, relief workers, and people whose tax records are located there.13Internal Revenue Service. A Few Boundaries Worth Knowing
State Taxes Are Separate
A federal extension does not automatically extend your state income tax deadline. Many states accept a copy of federal Form 4868, but typically only when you don’t owe state tax. If you do owe, most states require a separate state extension form or payment voucher by the original deadline. Some states grant automatic extensions with no form; states with no income tax require nothing. Rules vary, so check your state tax agency’s site.
Gift Tax Returns Ride Along
Filing Form 4868 for your income tax return automatically extends the deadline for Form 709, the gift and generation-skipping transfer tax return, to the same October 15 date. The extension covers filing only. Any gift or GST tax owed is still due by April 15, and if you need to pay gift tax separately from your income tax, use Form 8892.3Internal Revenue Service. If You’re Owed a Refund
Both late penalties are percentages of unpaid tax, so when you’re getting a refund, they apply to zero. You still lose the refund entirely if you file more than three years past the original deadline. And if your estimate turns out to be wrong and you actually owe, the absence of an extension gets expensive fast. Filing Form 4868 costs nothing, so filing it as insurance is the safer play when the outcome isn’t certain.
