If you forgot to add a 1099 on your taxes, file an amended return on Form 1040-X to add the missing income, and do it before the IRS sends you a notice. Every payer that issued you a 1099 sent a copy to the IRS, so the gap between what you reported and what the agency already has will surface. Moving first keeps your penalties smaller and your options wider.
Why Acting First Matters
The IRS runs an automated matching program called the Automated Underreporter that compares third-party income data against what you filed. When something doesn’t line up, you get a CP2000 notice proposing additional tax, penalties, and interest.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 652, Notice of Underreported Income – CP2000
A CP2000 isn’t technically an audit, but it costs you money the same way one does. The proposed amounts also tend to run higher than what you’d calculate yourself, because the IRS doesn’t know about deductions or cost basis that would reduce the tax on the missing income. Filing your own amended return lets you claim those offsets and demonstrates good faith, which helps if you later ask for penalty relief.
What It Will Cost You
Failure-to-Pay Penalty
If the missing 1099 means you owe more tax, the failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% of the unpaid amount per month, capped at 25% of the underpayment.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 US Code 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax It can be waived for reasonable cause, and self-correcting before the IRS writes to you strengthens that argument.
Interest
Interest runs daily on unpaid tax from the original due date of the return. The rate is set quarterly at the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points, and for the first quarter of 2026 the individual underpayment rate is 7%.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges4Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 Interest can’t be abated. Filing and paying is the only way to stop it.
Estimated Tax Penalty
If adding the 1099 pushes your total underpayment above $1,000 for the year, you may owe a separate estimated tax penalty.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax You’re safe if your withholding and estimated payments covered at least 90% of the current year’s tax or 100% of the prior year’s tax. If your AGI the year before exceeded $150,000, the prior-year safe harbor jumps to 110%.
How Long the IRS Has
The IRS generally has three years from the date you filed to assess additional tax, stretching to six years if the unreported income exceeds 25% of the gross income you did report.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 US Code 6501 – Limitations on Assessment and Collection If you never filed a return at all, there’s no time limit. Even if a year or two has gone by, amending is almost always worthwhile while you’re still inside the three-year window.
If adding the 1099 actually produces a refund — because tax was withheld on it, for example — you have three years from the original filing date or two years from when you paid the tax, whichever is later, to claim it.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund
If You Can’t Find the 1099
You don’t need the paper form to file a correction. You need the numbers. Request a Wage and Income Transcript through your online IRS account or by mailing Form 4506-T.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 159, How to Get a Tax Transcript or Copy of a Tax Return The transcript lists every W-2, 1099, 1098, and similar form reported under your Social Security number for the year, which is the same data the IRS matching program uses. The payer can usually send a duplicate too; most banks and brokerages keep prior-year forms in their online portals.
If the Filing Deadline Hasn’t Passed
Catching the mistake before the deadline, including any extension, is the easiest fix. Instead of amending, file a corrected original return — sometimes called a superseding return — that replaces the first one. The IRS treats the last return received before the due date as your original. Pay the full corrected amount by the deadline and you owe no penalties at all. In most tax software this means preparing a new, complete return with the missing income added and submitting it.
Filing Form 1040-X
Once the deadline passes, the fix is Form 1040-X. It uses three columns: Column A for the original amounts, Column B for the net change, and Column C for the corrected figures. Attach a complete corrected Form 1040 (or 1040-SR) along with any revised schedules.9Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X – Amended US Individual Income Tax Return
Part II asks why you’re amending. Keep it short and specific: “Amending to report $4,200 in interest income from Form 1099-INT not included on original return.” The examiner wants to verify the change against the attached documents, not read an essay.
Which Schedules to Revise
The 1099 type drives what you update:
- 1099-INT or 1099-DIV: revise Schedule B if the new totals cross the filing threshold for interest or dividend reporting.
- 1099-B for stock sales: update Form 8949 and Schedule D with the correct cost basis and proceeds.10Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule D (Form 1040), Capital Gains and Losses
- 1099-NEC for freelance or contract work: prepare or revise Schedule C and Schedule SE (see below).
- 1099-MISC for rental income: add the income to Schedule E.11Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 414, Rental Income and Expenses
Attach each revised schedule to the 1040-X along with the corrected Form 1040 and a copy of the 1099.
E-File or Paper
You can e-file an amended return for the current tax year and the two prior years through tax preparation software.12Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns If you originally filed on paper, though, the amendment also has to go on paper. E-filed amendments process faster and are easier to track. On a mailed paper 1040-X for a joint return, both spouses have to sign even if only one person’s income changed; an unsigned form comes back.
If the 1099 Was a 1099-NEC
A forgotten 1099-NEC hits harder than the other common types because it triggers self-employment tax on top of regular income tax. Start with Schedule C to report the gross income and subtract any business expenses you paid to earn it: home office costs, supplies, mileage, software, and the like. Those deductions reduce the profit that’s subject to both income tax and self-employment tax, so leaving them off is an expensive error. The net profit flows to Schedule SE, which calculates the SE tax.13Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes)
The SE tax rate is 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare. For 2026, only the first $184,500 of combined wages and self-employment earnings is subject to the Social Security portion.14Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base The Medicare portion has no cap, and an additional 0.9% Medicare tax applies once income exceeds $200,000 for single filers or $250,000 for married couples filing jointly.15Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 560, Additional Medicare Tax You also get to deduct half of the SE tax as an adjustment to income on your 1040. Include it when you recalculate; people forget this one and overpay.
How Added Income Can Ripple Through Your Return
Adding income usually does more than raise your tax on that income. It raises your AGI, and AGI controls eligibility for a long list of credits and deductions.
Premium Tax Credit
If you received advance premium tax credits through the Health Insurance Marketplace, higher income changes what you were entitled to. Attach a revised Form 8962 to reconcile the advance payments with your corrected credit.16Internal Revenue Service. Premium Tax Credit: Claiming the Credit and Reconciling Advance Credit Payments Any excess advance credit gets added to the tax due on your amendment.
Roth IRA Contributions
Higher income can push you past the phase-out range for direct Roth IRA contributions. For 2026, single filers lose eligibility entirely at $168,000 of modified AGI, and married couples filing jointly lose it at $252,000.17Internal Revenue Service. 401(k) Limit Increases to $24,500 for 2026; IRA Limit Increases to $7,500 If the added 1099 income pushes you over, you may have made an excess contribution that needs to be withdrawn or recharacterized to avoid a 6% excise tax each year it stays in the account.
Other AGI-Sensitive Items
Education credits, the Child Tax Credit, the student loan interest deduction, and various itemized deduction thresholds all phase out at specific income levels. When you redo the return, don’t stop at adding the income and recomputing the tax. Walk through every credit and deduction on the original return and confirm it still applies at the higher AGI.
Don’t Skip Your State Return
Most states that tax income start from federal AGI or federal taxable income. When your federal AGI rises, your state tax almost certainly does too. Many states require an amended state return within 30 to 90 days of a federal adjustment, and the IRS shares adjustment data with state revenue departments. Each state has its own form and deadline; check your state’s department of revenue website. Some states accept the federal 1040-X as documentation, others want it attached to their own form.
Asking for Penalty Relief
First-Time Abatement
If you filed on time, paid on time, and had no penalties for the three tax years before the one in question, you qualify for first-time abatement. It wipes out the failure-to-pay penalty (and failure-to-file, if that applies) for a single tax period.18Internal Revenue Service. Administrative Penalty Relief Call the number on your notice; a representative can often approve it on the spot. If the call doesn’t resolve it, submit Form 843.19Internal Revenue Service. Penalty Relief
Reasonable Cause
When first-time abatement isn’t available, you can argue reasonable cause — that you used ordinary care and the failure wasn’t willful neglect. Receiving an erroneous information return, relying on a tax professional who had all the relevant facts, or dealing with serious illness or a natural disaster during tax season can all support a reasonable cause claim. Isolated mistakes are generally treated more favorably than patterns of noncompliance.
After You File the Amendment
Amended returns take longer to process than originals. The IRS asks for 8 to 12 weeks, and processing can stretch to 16.20Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040X E-filed amendments usually land on the shorter end. Track yours with the “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool on irs.gov or by calling 866-464-2050 after three weeks.21Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Status updates lag actual processing, so don’t read too much into a stuck “received.”
If you owe more tax, pay as much as you can when you file. Don’t wait for a bill. Interest and the failure-to-pay penalty keep running until the balance is zero. Pay through IRS Direct Pay, by check, or by card through an authorized processor. If you can’t cover it all at once, apply for an installment agreement before collection activity starts.
