Ford Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty: What’s Covered, Limits, and Transfer

Ford’s bumper-to-bumper warranty, formally the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, covers the repair, replacement, or adjustment of nearly every part on a new Ford that fails because of a manufacturing defect in factory materials or workmanship. It runs for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, with no deductible on covered repairs.1Ford Service Content. 2025 Ford Car and Light Truck Warranty Guide The name oversells the scope: it is a comprehensive defect warranty, not a promise to fix anything that goes wrong for any reason.

What’s Actually Covered

If a component was built wrong or made from faulty material and it fails within the window, Ford pays for the parts and the labor at an authorized dealership. That reaches across the engine, transmission, drivetrain, suspension, steering, brake hardware, electrical system, climate control, infotainment, and body components.1Ford Service Content. 2025 Ford Car and Light Truck Warranty Guide

Specific items confirmed as covered include alternators, power seat and window motors, wiring harnesses, SYNC infotainment screens, navigation systems, driver-assist sensors, the instrument cluster, steering linkages and bushings, and the air conditioning compressor and heating system.2Schicker Ford. What Does Bumper-to-Bumper Really Mean The original 12-volt battery is covered for recharging or replacement across the full 3-year/36,000-mile period.3Ford. What Is My Battery Warranty Non-perforation corrosion on body panels is covered during the same window when it traces to a manufacturing defect.4Ford. What Is the Warranty on Corrosion

Tires are covered on a sliding, prorated basis: 100% for defects in the first 12,000 miles, 60% from 12,001 to 24,000 miles, and 30% from 24,001 to 36,000 miles.5Ford Service Content. 2026 Model Year Ford Warranty Guide

Because this is factory coverage, there is no deductible. Ford pays the full cost of parts and labor. That is different from a Ford Protect extended service plan bought later, which carries a per-visit deductible.6Ford-Trucks.com. Is There Really a $100 Deductible on the Original Factory Warranty

What’s Not Covered

The exclusions are where the label breaks down. Routine maintenance and consumables are out: oil changes, filters, fluids, lubricants, tire rotations, clutch linings, and vehicle cleaning are the owner’s cost.7Ford Service Content. 2025 Ford Light Truck Warranty Guide Parts that naturally wear out are also excluded from the general 3-year/36,000-mile term, though a handful get limited early coverage:

Anything caused by something other than a factory defect is out. That covers accidents, collisions, theft, vandalism, fire, hail, floods, road salt, tree sap, and stone chips. It also covers owner-inflicted damage: driving through water deep enough to enter the engine, hitting curbs, overloading the vehicle, or using it for racing.7Ford Service Content. 2025 Ford Light Truck Warranty Guide

A few categories void warranty coverage entirely. Vehicles with tampered or inoperative odometers, vehicles branded salvage, flood, junk, or rebuilt, and vehicles declared a total loss by an insurer lose all warranty protection. Converted ambulances without the Ford Ambulance Prep Package are also excluded.7Ford Service Content. 2025 Ford Light Truck Warranty Guide

When the Clock Starts and How Mileage Counts

The 3-year period begins on the date the vehicle is delivered to the first owner or put into service, whichever comes first. A demo or loaner starts its warranty the day it enters that service, even before it is titled to a retail buyer.5Ford Service Content. 2026 Model Year Ford Warranty Guide Any miles on the odometer at sale, from test drives, dealer transfers, or demo use, count against the 36,000-mile limit and are not added back.9Ford-Trucks.com. For vehicles sold at retail in California on or after July 1, 2023, the warranty start date and mileage begin no earlier than the actual delivery date, per the 2026 warranty guide.5Ford Service Content. 2026 Model Year Ford Warranty Guide

Keeping the Warranty Valid

Ford requires owners to follow the maintenance schedule in the Owner’s Manual. Skipping service does not cancel the warranty outright, but it will kill coverage on any part whose failure can be tied to the missed maintenance. Neglect oil changes, damage the engine, and Ford can deny the claim on the affected engine components.10Ford. Will the Warranty Be Canceled if I Do Not Perform Scheduled Maintenance

The work does not have to be done at a Ford dealership. Independent shops or the owner can handle it, as long as the materials meet Ford’s engineering specifications. Keep the receipts and service records as proof.5Ford Service Content. 2026 Model Year Ford Warranty Guide

Aftermarket parts do not automatically void the warranty. Ford will not cover failures caused by an aftermarket part or damage that part inflicts on other components, and lift kits, oversized tires, performance chips, and unauthorized body or chassis modifications are called out specifically. Emissions system tampering also disqualifies related repairs.7Ford Service Content. 2025 Ford Light Truck Warranty Guide Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a dealer has to prove that a specific aftermarket part caused the failure before denying a claim; the mere presence of one is not grounds for a blanket denial.11Ford. Getting a Repair, and What To Do if It’s Denied

Warranty repairs have to be performed at an authorized Ford dealership. Some claims require specialized training, so not every dealership handles every type of repair.12Ford. Where Do I Get Warranty Work Performed Bring the VIN and any relevant service records. The dealer diagnoses the concern and decides whether it qualifies.

If a claim is denied and you disagree, Ford’s warranty requires you to use the BBB AUTO LINE dispute resolution program before pursuing remedies under Magnuson-Moss or state lemon laws. It is free, does not require an attorney, and uses an independent arbitrator whose decision is binding on Ford if you accept it.5Ford Service Content. 2026 Model Year Ford Warranty Guide13BBB National Programs. Does It Transfer if You Sell the Vehicle

Yes. The bumper-to-bumper warranty transfers to subsequent owners, but the clock does not reset. A second owner gets whatever time and mileage are left of the original 3-year/36,000-mile term.14Gilboy Ford. Ford Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty

What Continues After Bumper-to-Bumper Ends

When the 3-year/36,000-mile term closes, several narrower warranties keep running. The powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission, and drivetrain for 5 years or 60,000 miles, including internal lubricated parts, the fuel pump, turbocharger, water pump, torque converter, transfer case, axle shafts, driveshafts, and constant velocity joints.15Ford. The federal emissions warranty covers catalytic converters, the electronic emissions control unit, and onboard diagnostics for 8 years or 80,000 miles on light-duty vehicles, with other emissions-related parts covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles. California vehicles get longer coverage under state law: 3 years or 50,000 miles on general emissions parts and 7 years or 70,000 miles on designated high-cost emissions parts.17California Air Resources Board.
