The difference between for-AGI and from-AGI deductions comes down to where they sit on your return. For-AGI deductions (also called above-the-line) are subtracted from your gross income to produce your adjusted gross income. From-AGI deductions (below-the-line) come off after that, reducing the income you’re actually taxed on but leaving your AGI untouched. That distinction matters because your AGI, not your taxable income, is the number the IRS uses to decide which credits, deductions, and surtaxes apply to you.
Where the Line Actually Is
Your adjusted gross income appears on line 11 of Form 1040.1Internal Revenue Service. Adjusted Gross Income2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 62 – Adjusted Gross Income Defined3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 63 – Taxable Income Defined
A dollar cut from AGI is worth more than a dollar cut from taxable income. Both lower your tax bill by the same amount at your marginal rate, but the above-the-line dollar also lowers the baseline the IRS uses for phase-outs, credit eligibility, and surtax thresholds. That’s the whole reason the categories are treated differently.
What Counts as a For-AGI Deduction
Above-the-line deductions are available to every eligible taxpayer whether or not they later itemize. The main ones a typical filer might claim:
- Student loan interest, up to $2,500 per year, phasing out above $85,000 of modified AGI for single filers and $170,000 for joint filers.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 US Code 221 – Interest on Education Loans
- Up to $300 in unreimbursed classroom costs for K–12 teachers and other eligible educators.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 458, Educator Expense Deduction
- Moving expenses for active-duty military members relocating under permanent change-of-station orders. Civilians lost this deduction after 2017.
- Half of self-employment tax, self-employed health insurance premiums, and contributions to a SEP IRA or similar self-employed retirement plan.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes7Internal Revenue Service. SEP Contribution Limits (Including Grandfathered SARSEPs)
- Health Savings Account contributions, capped at $4,400 for self-only coverage or $8,750 for family coverage in 2026, with a $1,000 catch-up at age 55.
- Traditional IRA contributions, subject to income-based phase-outs if you or your spouse are covered by a workplace retirement plan.
- Starting in 2026, cash gifts to qualifying operating charities of up to $1,000 (single) or $2,000 (joint) for taxpayers who take the standard deduction. Donor-advised funds don’t count.
What Counts as a From-AGI Deduction
Once your AGI is set, you subtract either the standard deduction or the total of your itemized deductions. Either way, this second subtraction is below the line: it lowers your taxable income but not your AGI.
The Standard Deduction
For 2026, the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers and married filing separately, $32,200 for married filing jointly, and $24,150 for heads of household.8Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Most people take it because their itemizable expenses don’t add up to more, and it requires no receipts.
Itemized Deductions
If your itemizable spending beats the standard deduction, the main categories are:
- Mortgage interest on up to $750,000 of home acquisition debt, made permanent starting in 2026.
- State and local taxes, capped at $40,400 for most filers in 2026. That cap phases down for households with modified AGI above $505,000, floor of $10,000 at the top.
- Charitable contributions to qualified charities, but only the portion above 0.5% of AGI starting in 2026.
- Unreimbursed medical and dental expenses above 7.5% of AGI.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 502, Medical and Dental Expenses
The choice between standard and itemized resets each year. A year with a big medical bill or a home purchase can tip you toward itemizing even if you normally don’t.
How a For-AGI Deduction Can Boost a From-AGI Deduction
The medical deduction shows why the categories interact. At $50,000 of AGI, you can only deduct medical expenses above $3,750 (7.5% of AGI). Move an above-the-line deduction onto your return that cuts AGI to $45,000, and the threshold falls to $3,375. An extra $375 of the same medical bills now clears the floor. The for-AGI deduction saves tax on its own and enlarges the from-AGI deduction at the same time.
The same interaction runs through the whole return. Any from-AGI item tied to an AGI percentage gets bigger when AGI shrinks, and any phase-out tied to AGI stays open longer.
Why AGI Controls More Than This Year’s Tax
AGI is a gatekeeper for credits, surtaxes, and account eligibility. That’s why tax planning tends to focus on the above-the-line side.
Credit Phase-Outs
The 2026 Child Tax Credit is $2,200 per qualifying child, phasing out at $200,000 of AGI for single parents and $400,000 for joint filers at a rate of $50 lost per $1,000 over the threshold. The earned income tax credit, education credits, and saver’s credit each have their own AGI-based phase-outs. An above-the-line deduction that drops AGI below one of these thresholds can preserve credits that would otherwise disappear.
The Net Investment Income Tax
A 3.8% surtax on investment income kicks in once modified AGI passes $200,000 for single filers, $250,000 for joint filers, or $125,000 for married individuals filing separately.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1411 – Imposition of Tax These thresholds don’t adjust for inflation. The tax hits the smaller of your net investment income or the amount by which MAGI exceeds the threshold, so lowering AGI can directly reduce or eliminate the surtax.
IRA Contribution Windows
Roth IRA contributions phase out based on modified AGI: for 2026, full contributions run up to $153,000 MAGI for single filers ($242,000 joint), with the window closing at $168,000 ($252,000 joint). Traditional IRA deductibility has its own AGI-based phase-outs when you’re covered by an employer plan. HSA contributions and the deductible half of self-employment tax can pull MAGI down enough to keep these windows open.
When AGI Isn’t the Number Being Tested
Many of the thresholds above technically use modified adjusted gross income, not AGI itself. MAGI starts with AGI and adds specific items back for the purpose of a particular test. There is no single MAGI formula; each provision defines its own add-backs.11Internal Revenue Service. Modified Adjusted Gross Income
Common add-backs include foreign earned income excluded on Form 2555, tax-exempt interest, and the foreign housing deduction. If none of those apply, your MAGI and AGI are the same. If you earn overseas income or hold municipal bonds, MAGI can run meaningfully higher than AGI and push you past thresholds you thought you had cleared.
