FMCSA reflective tape requirements are set out in 49 CFR 393.11 and 49 CFR 393.13, with the technical specifications in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 at 49 CFR 571.108. In short, most trailers 80 inches or wider with a GVWR above 10,000 pounds, and most truck tractors built on or after July 1, 1997, must carry certified red-and-white retroreflective sheeting in a defined pattern along the sides, across the lower rear, and at the upper rear corners of the trailer, plus rear width strips and upper cab corner markings on the tractor.
Which Vehicles Are Covered
Three conditions decide whether a trailer needs conspicuity markings: an overall width of 80 inches or more, a gross vehicle weight rating above 10,000 pounds, and a manufacture date on or after December 1, 1993.1eCFR. 49 CFR 393.11 – Lamps and Reflective Devices Width is measured across the full outside of the trailer, not just the cargo box. GVWR is the manufacturer’s rated maximum loaded weight, shown on the certification label.
Truck tractors have their own trigger. Those built on or after July 1, 1997, must carry conspicuity markings on the rear of the cab and near the rear wheels, and the requirement applies even when the tractor is running bobtail without a trailer.2eCFR. 49 CFR 571.108 – Standard No. 108 Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment
A smaller truck-and-trailer combination can still fall under federal oversight based on combined ratings. FMCSA treats a vehicle as a commercial motor vehicle when the GVWR or gross combination weight rating reaches 10,001 pounds or more.3Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Exemptions
49 CFR 393.11(b) excludes pole trailers, trailers designed exclusively for use as dwellings or offices, and converter dollies (which follow separate lamp and reflector rules). If your equipment falls outside those categories and meets the size and weight thresholds, the tape rule applies.
What the Tape Itself Must Be
Conspicuity sheeting must alternate red and white segments. Each segment is roughly 300 millimeters (about 12 inches) long, with a tolerance of plus or minus 150 millimeters, which is why commercial rolls commonly come in 6/6 or 11/7 patterns. Neither color can occupy more than two-thirds of any continuous strip.2eCFR. 49 CFR 571.108 – Standard No. 108 Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment
FMVSS 108 recognizes three certification grades, each tied to a minimum width:
- DOT-C2, at least 50 mm (about 2 inches) wide, the most common grade on trailers.
- DOT-C3, at least 75 mm (about 3 inches) wide.
- DOT-C4, at least 100 mm (about 4 inches) wide.
The certification code (DOT-C2, DOT-C3, or DOT-C4) must appear at least once on the exposed face of every red or white segment. On white-only strips, the marking must appear at least once every 300 millimeters. Characters must be at least 3 millimeters tall and permanently stamped, etched, molded, or printed in indelible ink. Uncertified tape draws an equipment violation at roadside because inspectors know where to look for that stamp.
Trailer Placement
Trailer markings cover three zones: the sides, the lower rear, and the upper rear corners. Each zone has its own rules.
Sides
Alternating red and white tape runs along each side, positioned as horizontally as possible and starting as close to the front and rear edges as the trailer allows. The strip does not have to be continuous, but the combined length of all segments must reach at least half the trailer’s overall length, with any gaps spaced as evenly as practicable. The centerline of the tape sits between 15 and 60 inches above the road with the trailer empty.4eCFR. 49 CFR 393.13 – Retroreflective Sheeting and Reflex Reflectors, Requirements for Semitrailers and Trailers Manufactured Before December 1, 1993 Where a rivet head or similar obstruction blocks a 2-inch strip, you can split it into two 1-inch strips of the same color separated by no more than 1 inch.
Lower Rear
The rear needs a horizontal strip of alternating red and white tape running the full width of the trailer, beginning and ending as close to the outermost edges as the body permits. The centerline again sits between 15 and 60 inches above the road when the trailer is empty. Most operators put this on or near the rear bumper or across the lower portion of the rear doors.
Upper Rear Corners
Two pairs of 12-inch strips go on the upper left and right corners of the rear. One strip in each pair runs horizontally and the other vertically, forming an L that outlines the trailer’s height and width. They mount as close to the top and as far apart as the trailer allows. These upper corner markings are white only, which is the detail operators most often get wrong when they assume the whole trailer uses the same red-and-white alternating pattern.

A tractor carries two separate sets of markings, with different colors and different locations.
Rear Width Markings
Two strips of alternating red and white tape, each at least 600 millimeters (about 24 inches) long, mark the width at the rear of the tractor. The preferred locations are the rear fenders, mudflap support brackets, plates attached to those brackets, or the mudflaps themselves. On mudflaps, the strips cannot sit lower than 300 millimeters (about 12 inches) below the top edge of the mudflap.2eCFR. 49 CFR 571.108 – Standard No. 108 Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment
For tractors without mudflaps, the strips can go on outboard brackets behind the rear axle, on brackets ahead of the rear axle above the tire tops, or directly on the back of the cab as close to the outer edges as possible. When mounted on the cab, no more than 25 percent of the strip area can be blocked by other equipment when viewed from directly behind the vehicle.
Upper Cab Corner Markings
Two pairs of white 300-millimeter (12-inch) strips go on the upper left and right corners of the cab, one horizontal and one vertical in each pair, mounted as close to the top and as far apart as the cab geometry allows. The same 25 percent obscuration limit applies. If the rear window covers all available mounting space, the material can be applied to the edge of the window itself.
Trailers Built Before December 1, 1993
Older trailers are not grandfathered. Under 49 CFR 393.13, any pre-1993 trailer 80 inches or wider with a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more had to be retrofitted with compliant retroreflective sheeting or reflex reflectors. The deadline was June 1, 2001, for most trailers and December 1, 2001, for container chassis.4eCFR. 49 CFR 393.13 – Retroreflective Sheeting and Reflex Reflectors, Requirements for Semitrailers and Trailers Manufactured Before December 1, 1993 Placement and coverage rules mirror those for newer trailers, and the same exemptions apply for pole trailers, dwelling or office trailers, and driveaway-towaway operations.
Keeping the Markings Compliant Over Time
Federal rules require lamps, reflectors, and conspicuity material to remain functional for as long as the vehicle stays in service. That means pre-trip checks for cleanliness, adhesion, cracking, and peeling. Road grime, diesel soot, and UV exposure all reduce reflectivity, and tape that no longer returns light to approaching headlights is not compliant simply because it is still stuck to the trailer.
At roadside, officers judge both placement and condition. A missing, damaged, or non-certified strip can produce a vehicle violation, and those violations feed a carrier’s Safety Measurement System profile under Vehicle Maintenance, which FMCSA uses to prioritize carriers for interventions and compliance reviews.5FMCSA. FMCSA is updating its SMS methodology to split Vehicle Maintenance into two categories: one for problems a driver could reasonably catch during a walk-around, and one for issues that would typically require a mechanic. Peeling or missing conspicuity tape falls squarely in the driver-observable side, so those violations will be measured on their own rather than being averaged in with mechanical findings.5FMCSA. Practical Application Points
Clean the mounting surface before applying tape. Reflective sheeting bonds best to smooth, dry, grease-free metal or fiberglass, and most adhesive manufacturers recommend moderate temperatures rather than extreme cold. Tape that peels within weeks usually traces back to poor surface prep.
When you lay out the sides, measure the trailer’s total length and confirm the segments add up to at least half that figure, with any gaps distributed evenly rather than clustered at one end. On the rear, push the strip as close to the outermost edges as the body allows. At the upper corners, keep those L-shaped strips white only.
On tractors, the detail most often missed is the rear width marking on or near the mudflaps. Mudflaps get replaced, and the replacements often arrive bare. Adding a conspicuity check to your mudflap replacement process closes a gap that otherwise tends to surface at the next roadside inspection.
