Fire extinguisher mounting requirements come from two documents working in tandem: NFPA 10 and OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.157. The top of a unit weighing 40 pounds or less can sit no higher than 5 feet above the floor; heavier units drop to 3.5 feet. The bottom of every hand-portable extinguisher stays at least 4 inches off the floor. Brackets must be manufacturer-supplied or listed for the specific extinguisher, never field-fabricated. Placement has to keep every hazard within the travel distance set for its fire class, and the finished installation has to satisfy ADA protrusion and reach limits in any public circulation path.1National Fire Protection Association. Height Limits by Extinguisher Weight
NFPA 10 draws its line at 40 pounds gross weight. For any extinguisher at or under that weight, the top of the unit cannot exceed 5 feet above the floor. For units heavier than 40 pounds, other than wheeled models, the top must sit no more than 3.5 feet above the floor.1National Fire Protection Association. A 50-pound cylinder mounted at head height is hard to lift down safely in an emergency, and a dropped extinguisher is both a hazard and a delay.
The floor clearance is the same for every unit. The bottom of any hand-portable extinguisher must be at least 4 inches above the floor.1National Fire Protection Association. NFPA 10 – Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers That gap protects the cylinder from standing water, cleaning chemicals, and knocks from carts or foot traffic.
Approved Brackets, Cabinets, and Hardware
NFPA 10 recognizes four ways to install an extinguisher: a hanger designed for that specific extinguisher, a manufacturer-supplied bracket with releasing straps or bands, a listed bracket approved for the purpose, or an approved cabinet or wall recess.1National Fire Protection Association. NFPA 10 – Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers Field-fabricated hangers do not qualify. Welding a custom bracket in the shop or bending steel strap around a cylinder fails the standard even if it holds the weight.
For temporary work like construction sites or seasonal setups, NFPA 10 recognizes portable stands designed to meet the same height rules as permanent mounts.1National Fire Protection Association. Anchoring to the Wall
Wall type determines the fasteners. Drywall by itself will not hold most extinguishers, so brackets should anchor into a stud or use heavy-duty toggle bolts rated for the combined weight of the bracket and a fully charged cylinder. Concrete and masonry need expansion anchors or concrete screws. A bracket that seems solid on install day can work loose over months of building vibration if the fastener was undersized for the load.
Cabinets and Recessed Installations
A recessed cabinet does two useful things at once. It shields the extinguisher from accidental damage, and it keeps the unit from sticking out into a corridor, which matters for ADA compliance. A cabinet has to be clearly marked to identify what is inside, and the extinguisher within still has to meet the same height and accessibility rules as any wall-mounted unit.
Travel Distance to the Nearest Extinguisher
Travel distance is measured along the actual walking path from a hazard to the nearest extinguisher, not a straight line through walls. The maximum depends on the fire class the extinguisher is protecting against.
Class A: Ordinary Combustibles
For Class A hazards such as wood, paper, and cloth, the maximum travel distance is 75 feet.1National Fire Protection Association. NFPA 10 – Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers Most offices, schools, and general retail space fall into this category for their common areas.
Class B: Flammable Liquids and Gases
Flammable liquids and gases move fast, and the travel distance reflects that. Depending on the hazard level and the extinguisher rating, the limit is either 30 or 50 feet.1National Fire Protection Association. NFPA 10 – Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers The 30-foot limit applies when the extinguisher rating is smaller relative to the hazard; a higher-rated unit earns the 50-foot allowance.
Class C, D, and K
Class C fires involve energized electrical equipment. NFPA 10 does not assign them a separate travel distance; you size and place extinguishers based on the underlying Class A or Class B hazard that would remain if the power were shut off, and the extinguisher itself must be rated for Class C to be safe near live components.1National Fire Protection Association. For Class D combustible metal hazards, OSHA requires the extinguishing agent to be within 75 feet of the work area in facilities that generate combustible metal powders, shavings, or flakes at least once every two weeks.2eCFR. 29 CFR 1910.157 – Portable Fire Extinguishers Only agents specifically designed for burning metals will do; standard water or dry chemical can react violently.
Commercial kitchens using cooking oils and fats need Class K extinguishers no more than 30 feet from the cooking equipment. In a typical kitchen layout, that puts a unit within a few steps of every fryer and range.
Visibility and Clear Access
An extinguisher that meets every dimensional rule still fails if no one can find or reach it. NFPA 10 requires extinguishers to be located conspicuously and to be immediately available.1National Fire Protection Association. NFPA 10 – Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers Where structural elements, equipment, or stored materials block the sight line, signs or other visual markers have to be installed, mounted high enough to be seen over the obstruction and placed along the normal path of travel.
OSHA carries the same idea into the workplace. Under 29 CFR 1910.157(c)(1), employers must mount, locate, and identify extinguishers so employees can reach them readily and without exposure to injury, and units must remain in their designated location except during actual use.2eCFR. 29 CFR 1910.157 – Portable Fire Extinguishers Blocking an extinguisher with inventory, machinery, or supplies is one of the most frequently cited violations inspectors write up.
ADA Protrusion and Reach Limits
In public and commercial buildings, the mount also has to satisfy the ADA standards for protruding objects and reach ranges.
Under ADA Standards Section 307, any wall-mounted object whose leading edge sits between 27 and 80 inches above the floor cannot protrude more than 4 inches into a circulation path.3U.S. Access Board. Chapter 3: Protruding Objects Standard extinguisher brackets typically push the cylinder 5 to 7 inches off the wall, so a surface-mounted unit in a corridor often violates the rule. Recessing the extinguisher into a cabinet or wall alcove is the usual fix. Objects mounted below 27 inches fall within cane-detection range and are exempt from the 4-inch limit.
ADA also caps how high the operable parts can sit. For an unobstructed forward or side reach, the maximum height is 48 inches and the minimum is 15 inches; an obstruction such as a counter between the user and the extinguisher lowers the maximum further.4U.S. Access Board. Chapter 3: Operable Parts Where the ADA reach limit conflicts with the NFPA maximum, the installation has to meet both, which in practice means mounting the unit lower than the NFPA ceiling.
Keeping the Mount Compliant After Installation
A correct install is the start, not the finish. OSHA requires a visual inspection of every portable extinguisher at least once a month.2eCFR. 29 CFR 1910.157 – Portable Fire Extinguishers The monthly check verifies that the unit is still in its designated location, the view to it is unobstructed, the pressure gauge reads in the operable range, the seal and pull pin are intact, and the shell shows no visible damage. Most sites use a hanging tag initialed each month.
Once a year, every extinguisher gets a full maintenance examination covering mechanical parts, the extinguishing agent, and the expelling mechanism. OSHA requires the employer to record the date of the annual check and keep the record for one year after the last entry or the life of the shell, whichever is shorter.2eCFR. 29 CFR 1910.157 – Portable Fire Extinguishers
Whenever an extinguisher comes off the wall for maintenance, recharging, or hydrostatic testing, the employer must provide equivalent backup protection during the gap.2eCFR. 29 CFR 1910.157 – Portable Fire Extinguishers An empty bracket while the unit is at the shop is itself a citable condition.
What Non-Compliance Costs
OSHA adjusts its penalty ceilings for inflation each January. As of the adjustment effective January 15, 2025, the maximums are:
- Serious violation: up to $16,550 per violation
- Other-than-serious violation: up to $16,550 per violation
- Failure to abate: up to $16,550 per day past the correction deadline
- Willful or repeated violation: up to $165,514 per violation
These are ceilings, and OSHA can reduce fines based on employer size, good faith, and violation history.5Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA Penalties A single blocked or badly mounted extinguisher can qualify as a serious violation, and if an inspector finds the same problem on 20 units in one building, each one counts separately. Repeat findings of the same standard compound quickly, and where a mounting failure contributed to an injury or death, expect the willful category.
