How to Use the SNAP Retailer Locator

Once results load, a map fills with pins. Click any pin to see the store’s name and physical address. If you’d rather scan a plain list, switch to the list view, which shows every nearby retailer with a rough distance from your starting point. Zoom controls let you focus on one neighborhood, and a reset button clears the search so you can try a different area. No internet? Call the SNAP Retailer Service Center at 1-877-823-4369. Local SNAP offices and 211 hotlines can also point you toward nearby stores.
What Kinds of Stores Show Up
The results usually cover a much wider range than people expect. Large supermarkets and national grocery chains anchor the list, but you’ll also find smaller convenience stores, gas stations with food sections, farmers’ markets, food cooperatives, and even some pharmacies or dollar stores that carry enough food to qualify. At some farmers’ markets and grocery stores, a federal program called the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) effectively doubles your SNAP dollars on fresh fruits and vegetables. Spend $10 in SNAP on produce and you might get another $10 in incentives to spend on more produce, loaded onto your EBT card or issued as market tokens depending on the retailer.5National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Shopping for Groceries Online with EBT
SNAP benefits work for online grocery orders in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.6Food and Nutrition Service. Stores Accepting SNAP Online Major retailers accepting EBT online include Amazon, Walmart, and several regional chains. Delivery platforms like Instacart, DoorDash, and Uber Eats also let you pay with EBT for grocery pickup and delivery at participating stores. The USDA’s online purchasing page has an interactive state-by-state map showing which retailers serve your area.
One catch worth knowing before you check out: SNAP covers only the food itself. Delivery fees, service charges, tips, and other surcharges come out of pocket. Eating at Restaurants with SNAP
SNAP normally can’t be used for prepared meals at restaurants. The exception is the Restaurant Meals Program (RMP), which operates in Arizona, California, Illinois (Cook and Franklin Counties only), Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Rhode Island, and Virginia.7Food and Nutrition Service. Even in those states, not every household qualifies. Everyone in your household must meet at least one of these criteria:
- Age 60 or older
- Receiving disability or blindness payments, or disability retirement benefits from a government agency
- Homeless
- The spouse of someone who qualifies above
If you’re eligible, your state programs your EBT card to work at participating restaurants automatically. The card simply declines at a restaurant if you don’t meet the criteria, so restaurants don’t screen you themselves.7Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Restaurant Meals Program
What Your EBT Card Will and Won’t Cover
Once you’re at an authorized store, your EBT card works for any food meant for home preparation and consumption. That covers fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy, breads, cereals, snack foods, and non-alcoholic beverages. It also covers seeds and plants that produce food for your household, so a tomato plant or a packet of herb seeds is fair game.8Food and Nutrition Service. What Can SNAP Buy?
SNAP will not pay for alcohol, cigarettes or tobacco, or foods that are hot at the point of sale. Non-food household items like cleaning supplies, paper products, and pet food are also excluded.8Food and Nutrition Service. What Can SNAP Buy? At the register, the store’s system separates eligible items from anything that doesn’t qualify, so you won’t accidentally charge a bottle of dish soap to your benefits. You pay for the non-food items with another form of payment.
