FIFAUS Charge Explained: Amounts, Disputes, and Legitimacy

A FIFAUS charge on your credit card statement is a payment to FIFA for 2026 World Cup tickets, bought either through FIFA’s official website or app or through FIFA’s official resale marketplace. The charge itself is legitimate, but the amount or the seats you ended up with may not match what you thought you were buying, and that gap is what has driven thousands of complaints, five state investigations, and a congressional inquiry.¹

Why the Amount May Not Match What You Expected

Three FIFA pricing practices explain most of the surprise charges fans have reported.

The 2026 tournament is the first World Cup to use dynamic pricing, meaning ticket prices move with demand. Between October 2025 and April 2026, prices for more than 90 of the tournament’s 104 matches rose by an average of 34 percent across the three main ticket categories.¹ Group stage tickets range from $60 to $2,735 at face value, and final tickets range from $2,020 to $7,875.²

In April 2026, FIFA also introduced two new premium tiers, “Front Category 1” and “Front Category 2,” that had not existed during the presale period beginning in October 2025. These new tiers carved out the most desirable lower-bowl and sideline seats and priced them at two to three times the cost of standard Category 1 tickets, with Front Category 1 reaching three times the standard Category 1 rate for certain high-demand matches.³ Fans who had already paid for Category 1 kept that label but lost access to the best seats in that tier.

Buyers of standard categories have also reported being placed in seats that looked, on FIFA’s original color-coded stadium maps, like they belonged to a lower category. Category 1 buyers have found themselves in corners, behind goals, or in upper-level sections that were originally labeled Category 2.⁴ Jose Flores paid $3,800 for two Category 2 seats at SoFi Stadium and was assigned Section 512 near the top of the stadium; Category 2 seats closer to the field were still being sold on FIFA’s website for $800 less than he had paid.⁵

FIFA points to its Ticket Terms of Use, which say stadium maps are “for guidance purposes only” and reserve FIFA’s right to move you to a seat in the same category or one of “comparable or better value.”⁴ Whether that disclaimer will hold up is exactly what state attorneys general are testing. California AG Rob Bonta wrote that a business “cannot defend practices by relying upon fine print or terms disclosed elsewhere that a reasonable consumer would not have reviewed or understood.”⁶

If Your Charge Was for a Resale

FIFA runs the only authorized resale marketplace and takes a 15 percent fee from the seller and a 15 percent fee from the buyer, a combined 30 percent cut on every transaction.⁷ In prior tournaments FIFA capped resale prices and kept fees at 10 percent or lower; both safeguards were dropped for the U.S. and Canadian legs of 2026, though Mexico capped resale prices at face value.⁸ Secondary market listings have reached as high as $28,500.²

Sellers report a separate problem: they never got paid. FIFA’s terms promise resale payment within 60 calendar days, but sellers have waited more than 100 to 136 days without receiving funds, and describe getting identical automated emails every five to seven business days promising a “case review” with no update. FIFA has blamed the delays on incomplete banking information, anti-fraud and anti-money-laundering checks, and payment card scheme rules that prevent refunding amounts above the original purchase price back to a credit card. Sellers say the delays continue even after they submit bank account and routing numbers.⁹

How to Dispute a FIFAUS Charge

Card networks recommend trying to resolve the dispute directly with the merchant first. FIFA’s ticketing enquiries address is fwc2026.ticketing.enquiries@tickets.fifa.org, though many buyers report receiving only automated replies.⁹

If FIFA does not resolve it, file a dispute with your card issuer. The Fair Credit Billing Act allows you to dispute charges for goods or services not delivered as agreed, provided you send a written dispute within 60 days of the statement date.¹⁰ One consumer reported that Citigroup opened a 90-day investigation and issued an immediate provisional credit after a dispute was filed.¹¹

Before you file, gather:

Your purchase confirmation email and receipt
Screenshots of the FIFA stadium map and category description at the time you bought
Screenshots of the actual section and seat you were assigned
All correspondence with FIFA customer service

You can also file complaints with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and with your state attorney general. The New York AG’s office has asked affected consumers to submit complaints through its website or by calling (800) 771-7755.¹⁶¹²

Is Your FIFAUS Charge Even Real?

A charge labeled FIFAUS almost always corresponds to a purchase on FIFA.com, the FIFA app, or FIFA’s resale marketplace. If you don’t remember making such a purchase, treat the charge as potentially fraudulent and call your card issuer.

The FTC has warned about “copycat websites” that scammers push to the top of search results to impersonate FIFA’s official ticket pages.¹⁰¹³ Missouri AG Catherine Hanaway warned that tickets priced significantly below market value are likely fraudulent.¹⁴ Agencies uniformly advise buying only through FIFA.com, the FIFA app, or well-known authorized resale platforms, and paying by credit card rather than cash apps, gift cards, or wire transfers.

What the Investigations Could Mean for Refunds

No court has yet ruled on whether FIFA’s disclaimer shields it from liability for downgraded seats or post-sale category changes, and as of mid-2026 no class action had been filed, though at least one firm was soliciting reports from affected buyers.¹⁵ The New York and New Jersey investigation covers eight matches at MetLife Stadium including the July 19 final, and reporting has indicated FIFA is unlikely to respond to the subpoenas before the tournament’s June 11 kickoff.¹⁶ Filing a complaint with your state AG puts your charge in the record any eventual enforcement action would draw from, but your fastest path to money back remains your card issuer’s chargeback process.
