A FastSpring charge on your credit card comes from a digital purchase, usually software or a subscription, that a developer sold through FastSpring’s checkout system. FastSpring is the payment processor and legal seller of record, so its name appears on your statement (often as “FSPRG” or “FS*” followed by a company name) instead of the software brand you actually bought from. You can identify the exact order in about two minutes using FastSpring’s own lookup tool, and from there decide whether to keep it, cancel a renewal, request a refund, or dispute it as fraud.
Why FastSpring Shows Up Instead of the Software Company
FastSpring operates as a merchant of record for software developers around the world. The developer builds the product; FastSpring runs the checkout, collects the money, handles sales tax, and processes the transaction. Because FastSpring is the legal seller, its name (not the software brand) lands on your statement. That’s the whole reason the charge looks unfamiliar even when the purchase was legitimate.
How to Find Out What You Actually Bought
Go to FastSpring’s Question a Charge page at fastspring.com/question-a-charge. Enter the charge date, amount, payment details, and currency. If the system matches the transaction, it emails a fresh receipt with the full order information.1FastSpring. Product Update: Introducing the Improved Question a Charge Page
You can also search your own inbox first. FastSpring sends order receipts and subscription notices from mailer@fastspring.com.2FastSpring. Customer Notifications Check Spam and Promotions too; automated receipts often end up filtered. The confirmation email contains an Order ID, which you’ll want on hand for anything you do next.
When the Lookup Finds Nothing
If FastSpring can’t match the charge to any order, treat that as a warning sign. The card details may have differed slightly from what you entered, or the card may have been used without your knowledge. Don’t wait on the card side while that plays out. Call your issuer. Federal law caps your liability for unauthorized credit card charges at $50, and once you report the card compromised, you owe nothing for charges after that point.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 15 – 1643 Liability of Holder of Credit Card Most major issuers go further with zero-liability policies, but the $50 figure is the legal floor. The faster you report it, the better your position.
If It’s a Subscription That Renewed
The most common reason a FastSpring charge shows up unexpectedly is an automatic renewal. Many tools bill monthly or annually, and the charge processes unless you cancel before the renewal date. The recurring terms are presented at the original checkout, but almost no one remembers them a year later.5FastSpring. FastSpring Subscription Management and Recurring Payments
Your original confirmation email includes a link to an account portal where you can see subscription status, the next payment date, and the amount. To cancel, use the Cancel a Subscription option on FastSpring’s buyer support page.3FastSpring. Buyer Support Do it before the next billing date. Once the charge processes, you’re in refund territory, and refunds are never guaranteed.
Trials That Convert to Paid Plans
Some merchants offer free or discounted trials that flip to a full-price subscription when the trial ends. Whether you get a reminder before that first real charge is up to the software company. FastSpring lets merchants configure a trial reminder, but it’s optional, and some don’t set one up.6FastSpring. subscription.trial.reminder If you sign up for a trial, put the end date on your own calendar.
How to Get a Refund
Refund requests go through FastSpring’s consumer support portal. Pick the form that matches your issue and have your Order ID ready; the required fields are designed to route your request quickly.7FastSpring. Introducing the New Consumer Support Portal If you don’t have the Order ID, the form has additional fields agents can use to find the transaction.
Whether a refund gets approved depends on the software company’s own refund policy. FastSpring enforces the merchant’s terms rather than a single universal one. On the processing side, FastSpring can refund credit card orders up to six months after purchase and PayPal orders within three months.8FastSpring. Why a Chargeback Shouldn’t Be Your First Move
Filing a chargeback through your bank can feel faster, but it usually isn’t, and it carries real costs for you. A chargeback is an adversarial reversal. The merchant loses the revenue and takes fees on top, and the process runs weeks.
The practical problem is worse. When a chargeback hits a digital purchase, the software company will almost certainly revoke your license or disable your account. If the merchant then successfully disputes the chargeback, you’re out both the software and the refund. There’s also the double-deduction risk: requesting a refund from FastSpring and filing a chargeback at the same time can pull the money from the merchant twice, creating a tangled dispute that delays everything.
Work the FastSpring support portal first. Escalate to a bank dispute only if FastSpring is unresponsive or denies a refund you believe you’re owed. Your documented attempt to resolve it directly makes any later dispute stronger.
Your Formal Dispute Rights
If you believe the charge is unauthorized or a billing error, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you a structured path. You have 60 days from the date the statement containing the charge was sent to notify your card issuer in writing, at the address the issuer designates for billing inquiries (not the payment address).9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 15 – 1666 Correction of Billing Errors
Once the issuer receives a proper dispute, it must acknowledge the notice within 30 days and resolve the investigation within two billing cycles, no more than 90 days. During that period, the issuer can’t try to collect the disputed amount or report it as delinquent. Send the letter by certified mail with a return receipt so you have proof of the delivery date. The 60-day window is firm, and missing it costs you this specific protection.
After Confirming a Charge Is Fraudulent
If you’ve confirmed that a FastSpring charge is unauthorized, do more than dispute the single transaction. Ask your issuer for a new card number, update saved payment methods on other sites, and review recent statements for any other unfamiliar charges. One fraudulent charge is rarely the only one.
