FAR Form Fund Annual Return: Deadlines, Filing Steps, and Statements

The FAR form in the Cayman Islands is the Fund Annual Return that every regulated mutual fund and registered private fund must file with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA), together with audited financial statements, within six months of the fund’s financial year-end.1Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Mutual Funds Act (2021 Revision) – Section 8 The operator completes the return, but the fund’s CIMA-approved local auditor is the party that actually uploads and submits it through the REEFS portal. The operator remains legally responsible for the accuracy of every figure in it.2Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Investment Funds Reporting Requirements and Schedule

Which Form Applies to Your Fund

Regulated mutual funds file the Mutual Fund FAR (currently Form 4.0). Registered private funds file the Private Fund FAR (PFR-049-77). The two forms collect similar categories of data with fields adjusted for the differences between open-ended and closed-ended vehicles.2Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Every reporting entity files separately. A master fund holding assets for one or more feeders submits its own return, and each sub-fund inside a segregated portfolio company or other umbrella structure is a separate reporting unit. The completion guide requires the filer to identify whether the return covers a master fund, a regulated feeder fund, or a standalone vehicle, and to state the number of sub-funds included.3Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Deadline and Extensions

The FAR and audited financial statements are due within six months of the fund’s financial year-end under Section 8(2) of the Mutual Funds Act and Section 13(4) of the Private Funds Act. A December 31, 2025 year-end produces a June 30, 2026 deadline.1Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Mutual Funds Act (2021 Revision) – Section 8

Extensions are available. Mutual fund operators or their auditors request additional time by completing Form FXT-162-22 through REEFS. Submit the request before the deadline passes. Late requests trigger additional review and longer processing, and the fund remains in breach of the Act until CIMA either receives the filings or processes the extension.4Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. What to Gather Before Opening the Form

The FAR is a substantial data collection exercise. Pull everything together before entering data, both to avoid session timeouts and to catch mismatches with CIMA’s existing records for the fund.

Identification and General Information

You will need the fund’s full legal name, CIMA certificate or license number, and Legal Entity Identifier if one has been issued. The form asks whether the fund operates as a single fund or multi-fund structure, whether it is a master or feeder fund, and the number of sub-funds included. General fields cover reporting currency, investment strategy, legal structure, accounting and auditing standards used, minimum subscription amount converted to USD, and whether the fund is listed on a stock exchange.3Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Service Provider Details

A large portion of the form covers service providers. For each, you report names, jurisdictions, and regulatory details:

  • Fund operators: name, type, identification number, and email address.
  • Investment manager: name, LEI, jurisdiction, regulator name and country, and any sub-delegated managers.
  • Fund administrator and NAV calculation agent: name and jurisdiction, including any sub-agents and the register of members agent.
  • Legal counsel: primary Cayman Islands counsel and primary onshore counsel, with partner names.
  • Auditor: firm name, audit opinion type, and resignation status.
  • Primary custodian: name, jurisdiction, regulator details, and any sub-custodians.

Verify registration numbers and entity names against CIMA’s records before you start. Discrepancies between the FAR and the regulator’s file for the fund cause processing delays.3Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Fund Annual Return Completion Guide

Operating Information

A series of yes/no and status questions covers the reporting period: whether trading was suspended, whether redemptions of participating equity interests were restricted, whether any regulatory investigations occurred, the date of the most recent offering document, and whether the operator decided to terminate the fund. The form also asks about side pockets, redemption or withdrawal gates, and the number of operator meetings held during the period.3Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Financial Data

The financial sections are the core of the return:

  • Investor geography: countries of investors of record representing 10 percent or more of the fund’s interests.
  • Summary statement of financial position: total assets, total liabilities, and net asset value at the reporting date.
  • Asset and liability allocation: a breakdown of investments by asset class and geographic region.
  • Leverage: the fund’s leverage ratio as a percentage.
  • Summary expenses: an overview of operating costs during the period.

Every figure should reconcile to the audited financial statements for the same period. The FAR is not itself an audited document, but much of its financial content comes directly from the audited accounts, and inconsistencies between the two draw regulatory scrutiny quickly.3Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. How the Submission Actually Works

This is the point that trips up first-time filers. The operator does not press submit. CIMA requires the fund’s local approved auditor to perform the upload and submission through REEFS. The operator completes the form; the auditor is the authorized submitter. Despite the split, the operator remains legally responsible for the accuracy and completeness of every data point.5Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. The Excel Workflow

The FAR is completed in an Excel spreadsheet available from the CIMA website or from within REEFS. In practice, the local auditor downloads the spreadsheet and sends it to the operator to fill out. Once complete, it goes back to the auditor.6Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. REEFS Guidance – FAR and AFS Filing Manual

Upload, Validation, and Submission

The auditor uploads the completed Excel file into REEFS, where the system populates the standing data and financial data forms automatically. The auditor reviews both for completeness and goes back to the fund for anything missing. Before submitting, the auditor attaches the audited financial statements. REEFS will not allow submission without them.6Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. REEFS Guidance – FAR and AFS Filing Manual

The final step is clicking “Validate and Submit.” If the system finds errors, missing fields, format issues, or inconsistencies, it returns them to the submitter. The auditor corrects and re-validates until the submission clears. Once resolved, the status changes to “Ready to Submit,” and the auditor completes the filing by clicking “Submit” and then “Send.”6Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. The Audited Financial Statements That Go With It

The audit must be conducted by a firm on CIMA’s approved auditors list, and only firms with a physical presence in the Cayman Islands qualify. Physical presence means staff, facilities, and books and records in the jurisdiction that CIMA considers appropriate for the nature and scale of the business. A global firm that performed the substantive audit work abroad still needs a CIMA-approved local firm to sign off.7Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Regulatory Policy – Local Audit Sign-Off for Private Funds

The financial statements must be prepared using IFRS or the generally accepted accounting principles of the United States, Japan, or Switzerland. The audit must follow International Standards on Auditing or the generally accepted auditing standards of one of those same jurisdictions. An unapproved auditor or non-compliant accounting standards will result in the filing being rejected.1Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Mutual Funds Act (2021 Revision) – Section 8

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

A fund that misses the deadline without an approved extension is in breach of the Mutual Funds Act or Private Funds Act, falls out of good standing, and is exposed to enforcement action. Under Section 8(3) of the Mutual Funds Act, a fund operator who fails to ensure the fund complies with its audit and filing obligations commits an offence punishable on conviction by a fine of up to CI$20,000.1Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Mutual Funds Act (2021 Revision) – Section 8 CIMA also has broad authority to impose administrative fines for breaches of prescribed provisions.8Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Administrative Fines

Losing good standing is often the more immediate practical problem. Investors, counterparties, and prime brokers routinely request proof of regulatory standing, and a fund that cannot produce it faces commercial consequences well before any fine is assessed.
