FAA TCDS: Type Certificate Data Sheet Limits and Airworthiness

An FAA Type Certificate Data Sheet is the document that records every approved specification and operating limit for a certificated aircraft, engine, or propeller model. It lists weight limits, approved engine and propeller combinations, fuel and oil specifications, airspeed limits, center-of-gravity ranges, required placards, and dozens of other parameters the FAA verified during certification. How the TCDS Relates to the Type Certificate

The type certificate itself is the FAA’s approval of a design. The TCDS is the public record attached to that approval, documenting exactly what was certified. The TCDS gives pilots, mechanics, and inspectors the specific numbers they need without having to work through the full engineering data the manufacturer submitted during certification. Where a single type certificate covers multiple models, each model gets its own section within the same data sheet.

What a TCDS Contains

A TCDS follows a standardized layout. Within each model section you’ll find:

  • General information: manufacturer, model designation, category (normal, utility, acrobatic, transport), and number of seats.
  • Certification basis: the airworthiness standards the aircraft was certified against, plus any exemptions or equivalent safety findings.
  • Technical characteristics and operating limitations: the core of the document.
  • Operating and service instructions: references to the approved flight manual, maintenance program, and required service documents.
  • Notes: mandatory placards, instrument markings, required equipment for specific flight operations, and any special conditions the FAA attached.

The Notes section deserves attention. Placards and markings listed there carry the same legal weight as any other operating limitation. Weight, Balance, and Structural Limits

The TCDS specifies maximum takeoff weight, maximum landing weight (if different), and the approved center-of-gravity envelope. Loading outside the CG range listed in the TCDS creates handling characteristics the manufacturer never tested and the FAA never approved. Individual limits also appear here, including maximum baggage weight for each compartment and any structural weight restrictions for specific stations.

Engine and Propeller Combinations

You cannot install just any engine in a certificated airframe. The TCDS identifies the exact engine models approved for the aircraft, along with horsepower or thrust ratings, required fuel grades, and oil specifications. Propeller models are similarly specified. An engine-propeller-airframe combination that isn’t listed in the TCDS, and isn’t covered by a Supplemental Type Certificate, renders the aircraft non-airworthy regardless of whether the parts physically fit.

Airspeed, Fuel, and Control Limits

The TCDS records critical airspeed limitations, including never-exceed speed (VNE), maximum structural cruising speed, and maneuvering speed. Fuel and oil capacities are documented, along with which fuel tanks are usable in flight and which count as unusable fuel for weight-and-balance purposes. Control surface travel limits define the maximum deflection angles for ailerons, elevators, rudder, and trim tabs.

Required Equipment

The TCDS establishes what equipment must be installed for the aircraft to meet its certification basis. For many aircraft this feeds into a Kinds of Operations Equipment List in the Pilot’s Operating Handbook, breaking down which instruments and systems must work for VFR day, VFR night, IFR day, and IFR night operations. When a piece of equipment fails, that list is the starting point for deciding whether the flight can legally continue under the regulations covering inoperative instruments.

Where to Find a TCDS

One detail trips people up. TCDS documents are revised over time as the FAA approves changes to the type design, and each revision has its own number and date. Using the TCDS to Confirm Airworthiness

The link between the TCDS and an airworthiness certificate is direct. To receive a standard airworthiness certificate, an aircraft must conform to its approved type design and be in condition for safe operation.6eCFR. 14 CFR Part 21 Subpart H – Airworthiness Certificates “Conform to the type design” is the phrase the regulations use, and the TCDS is what makes the type design concrete enough to check against.

Responsibility for keeping the aircraft in conformity sits with the owner or operator, who is primarily responsible for maintaining the aircraft in an airworthy condition and complying with applicable Airworthiness Directives.7eCFR. 14 CFR 91.403 – General In practical terms, that means knowing what the TCDS says, verifying the aircraft matches it, and addressing any discrepancies before flight.

Life-limited parts are where the TCDS meets day-to-day recordkeeping. Certain components have finite service lives established in the TCDS and other approved documents, and aircraft records must contain the current status of every life-limited part installed, with enough detail to establish how much life remains.8Federal Aviation Administration. Airworthiness Directives: The Companion Document

An aircraft can match every line of its TCDS and still be unairworthy if it has outstanding Airworthiness Directives. No one may operate a product to which an AD applies unless the AD’s requirements are met. The TCDS represents the aircraft as originally certified; ADs represent corrections the FAA mandated afterward. Checking conformity means reviewing both.

How Modifications Change What “Conforms” Means

A Supplemental Type Certificate covers a major change to an aircraft’s type design when the change isn’t significant enough to require an entirely new type certificate. An STC consists of the FAA’s approval of the design change together with the type certificate previously issued for the product.11eCFR. 14 CFR Part 21 Subpart E – Supplemental Type Certificates The modified aircraft stays tied to its original TCDS, and the STC documents exactly how and where the design departs from it. After an STC is installed, conformity means matching both.

Not every major alteration needs an STC. For a one-off change to a single aircraft, the FAA offers a field approval process, and every major alteration or repair, whether approved by STC or field approval, gets recorded on FAA Form 337. The form requires a clear description of the work and must reference the applicable regulations and FAA-approved data used to substantiate the airworthiness of the change.12Federal Aviation Administration. What Happens If the Aircraft Doesn’t Conform

Operating an aircraft that doesn’t match its type design is treated by the FAA as a safety violation, not a paperwork issue. When investigators suspect non-conformity, they pull the relevant portions of the TCDS and compare them against the aircraft’s actual condition.13Federal Aviation Administration. The practical takeaway is simple. The TCDS defines what the FAA approved. Keeping the aircraft matched to it, and to any ADs, STCs, and Form 337 entries that have modified the baseline, is what keeps the airworthiness certificate valid.
