FAA-Approved Vinyl Wrap Requirements for Aircraft

A full exterior vinyl wrap on a certificated aircraft is a major alteration, and the FAA will not sign one off through a routine field approval. To be legal, an FAA approved vinyl wrap for an aircraft has to be authorized under a Type Certificate, Amended Type Certificate, or, far more commonly, a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). The wrap must use materials the approval specifies, be installed by certificated personnel, and be documented on FAA Form 337 with an updated weight and balance. One boundary up front. These requirements target full wraps covering large exterior surfaces. Small vinyl decals or logos on limited areas of the fuselage or tail, and vinyl registration numbers, are not subject to the TC/ATC/STC requirement.1Federal Aviation Administration. Why an STC Is the Practical Approval Path

The FAA has ruled out a simple field approval for full wraps because the modification touches control surfaces, mass balance, flutter characteristics, empty weight, and center of gravity, all of which the regulations treat as major alterations.2eCFR. 14 CFR Appendix A to Part 43 – Major Alterations, Major Repairs, and Preventive Maintenance Only a TC, ATC, or STC is acceptable.1Federal Aviation Administration. An STC is a design approval issued when someone has shown that a modification to an existing aircraft meets all applicable airworthiness requirements under 14 CFR 21.115.3Federal Aviation Administration. Supplemental Type Certificates4eCFR. 14 CFR 21.115 – Applicable Requirements In practice, a wrap company holding an STC has already done the engineering analysis, flammability testing, and flutter evaluation. The STC then spells out which aircraft makes and models it covers, which materials are approved, and how the installation must be performed. If an existing STC covers your aircraft, you use the approved materials, follow the installation instructions, and reference the STC number in your paperwork.

Type Certificates and Amended Type Certificates are the approval paths for an aircraft’s original design or a formal amendment to it. They are rarely used by individual owners for a wrap and matter mostly when a manufacturer builds a wrap option into a production model.

If no STC covers your aircraft, someone has to develop the compliance data from scratch, addressing every safety concern the FAA has flagged for wraps. What the FAA Requires the Material to Handle

The vinyl itself has to meet airworthiness standards, and the STC (or engineering data package) will name a specific product. Substituting a different brand or formulation, even one that looks equivalent, is not permitted.

Flammability is central. Under 14 CFR 23.2325, materials in compartments accessible in flight must be flame resistant for level 1, 2, and 3 airplanes, and self-extinguishing in the cockpit, cabin, baggage, and cargo compartments of level 4 airplanes.7eCFR. 14 CFR 23.2325 – Fire Protection For exterior wrap applications near engine exhausts and nacelles, the FAA requires test specimens built up from the actual cowling or nacelle structure with the vinyl applied on top, not the vinyl tested alone.1Federal Aviation Administration. Beyond fire behavior, the material has to resist adhesion failure at high airspeeds, tolerate rain, hail, and de-icing fluids, and hold up across the temperature range the aircraft sees. The FAA also requires a defined mandatory removal timeline. A wrap cannot stay on the aircraft indefinitely.1Federal Aviation Administration. Q3 2025 Small Airplane Issues List and Release Notes

Who Is Allowed to Install It

Under 14 CFR 43.3, alterations to a certificated aircraft may only be performed by the holder of a mechanic certificate, a repairman certificate, or a repair station certificate.8eCFR. 14 CFR 43.3 – Persons Authorized to Perform Maintenance, Preventive Maintenance, Rebuilding, and Alterations An uncertificated person can do physical work only under the direct supervision of a certificate holder who personally observes the work and remains available for consultation, and that supervised person cannot perform the inspection that follows a major alteration.

Once installation is complete, the aircraft must be approved for return to service. A mechanic certificate holder or an inspection authorization (IA) holder can sign that approval.9eCFR. 14 CFR 43.7 – Persons Authorized to Approve Aircraft, Airframes, Aircraft Engines, Propellers, Appliances, or Component Parts for Return to Service Because a full wrap is a major alteration, most shops bring in an IA for the final inspection.

Installation Practices That Keep the Aircraft Airworthy

Before any vinyl goes on, the underlying skin and structure need a careful inspection for cracks, corrosion, and damage. Once wrapped, those defects disappear from view during routine checks, so this is the last practical chance to catch them.

During installation, the wrap cannot cover fuel vents, static ports, drain holes, or hinges, and it cannot obscure required exterior markings or emergency exit indicators. Control surfaces and tabs need particular attention because added material can shift mass balance and reduce clearance between adjacent surfaces, creating flutter risks the FAA classifies as potentially catastrophic. Trimming has to be precise. Scoring the aircraft skin with a blade can initiate fatigue cracks, a concern the FAA specifically raised for pressurized airframes.1Federal Aviation Administration. Heat guns and blowtorches used during application carry their own risks. Open flame near fuel tanks and vents is a fire hazard, blowtorch heat sits well above the cure temperatures of composite parts and can degrade them, and sensitive antennas can be damaged before anything visible shows on the surface. Any installation that impairs flight controls or blocks access needed for maintenance renders the aircraft unairworthy until corrected.10eCFR. 14 CFR 91.7 – Civil Aircraft Airworthiness

Paperwork That Has to Exist Afterward

Good work is not enough on its own. A major alteration is only legally complete when the records are.

FAA Form 337

The person performing the alteration must complete FAA Form 337 (Major Repair and Alteration) in at least duplicate, describing the work and referencing the approved data, typically the STC number.11eCFR. 14 CFR Appendix B to Part 43 – Recording of Major Repairs and Major Alterations One signed copy goes to the owner. A duplicate must reach the FAA Aircraft Registration Branch in Oklahoma City within 48 hours after the aircraft is approved for return to service.12Federal Aviation Administration. Maintenance Logbook Entry

The installer must also make a maintenance record entry with a description of the work, the completion date, and the signature and certificate number of the person approving return to service.13eCFR. 14 CFR 43.9 – Content, Form, and Disposition of Maintenance, Preventive Maintenance, Rebuilding, and Alteration Records The entry should reference the Form 337 so the paper trail is easy to follow later.

Weight and Balance Update

A full wrap adds measurable weight, and where that weight sits changes the center of gravity. The aircraft’s weight and balance report has to be updated.14Federal Aviation Administration. Aircraft Weight and Balance Handbook Changes to empty weight or CG limits are themselves classified as airframe major alterations,2eCFR. 14 CFR Appendix A to Part 43 – Major Alterations, Major Repairs, and Preventive Maintenance which is why skipping this step is not a housekeeping oversight. Inaccurate weight and balance data can put the aircraft outside its certified operating envelope without the pilot knowing.

Keep copies of the Form 337, the logbook entry, the updated weight and balance data, and the underlying technical documentation with the aircraft’s permanent records. These follow the aircraft through every sale, annual, and insurance review.

What Flying With an Unapproved Wrap Costs

The aircraft owner carries primary responsibility for maintaining airworthiness.15eCFR. 14 CFR 91.403 – General An unapproved wrap makes the aircraft unairworthy, and 14 CFR 91.7 requires the pilot in command to ground it.10eCFR. 14 CFR 91.7 – Civil Aircraft Airworthiness

Civil penalties can reach $1,875 per violation for individuals, with each flight counted separately.16eCFR. 14 CFR Part 13 Subpart H – Civil Monetary Penalty Inflation Adjustment Certificate suspensions range from 20 days to 270 days for serious violations, and the FAA can suspend a certificate indefinitely when it has reason to question the holder’s qualifications.17Federal Aviation Administration. FAA Order 2150.3C – Compliance and Enforcement Program The mechanic who signed off a non-compliant installation faces the same exposure to their certificate.

Insurance is the other pressure point. Most aviation policies exclude coverage for losses arising from unairworthy conditions. If an unapproved wrap contributes to an incident, say by adhesion failure jamming a control surface, the insurer has grounds to deny the claim outright. And the aircraft becomes hard to sell, because any competent pre-purchase inspection will surface the undocumented modification and raise questions about what else was done off the books.
