Express Entry: CRS Score, Draws, and Application Steps

Express Entry is the online system Canada uses to manage permanent residence applications from skilled workers, ranking candidates by a points score and inviting the highest-ranked to apply. It is not an immigration program itself but the gateway for three federal economic programs, and Canada’s 2026 levels plan targets roughly 109,000 admissions through federal high-skilled pathways alone.1Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Supplementary Information for the 2026-2028 Immigration Levels Plan Understanding how the ranking, the invitations, and the application steps fit together is what turns eligibility into an actual permanent residence.

The Three Programs You Can Apply Under

To enter the Express Entry pool at all, you must qualify for one of three federal programs.

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is for people with foreign work experience who want to immigrate based on their education, language ability, and professional background. You need at least one continuous year of full-time skilled work experience, or 1,560 total hours part-time, gained within the last ten years. If your education was completed outside Canada, an Educational Credential Assessment is required.2Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Federal Skilled Worker Program – Who Can Apply

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for qualified tradespeople in sectors like construction, manufacturing, transportation, and natural resources. Candidates typically hold a certificate of qualification from a Canadian provincial or territorial authority or have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.3Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. The Canadian Experience Class targets temporary workers and international graduates with at least one year of skilled work experience, or 1,560 hours, gained in Canada within the three years before applying. Because these candidates have already lived and worked in Canada, they are exempt from the proof-of-funds requirement.4Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. How Your CRS Score Is Calculated

Every profile in the pool is scored out of 1,200 points under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The score decides whether you get invited. Points break into three categories: core human capital (up to 500 for single applicants, 460 with a spouse or partner), skill transferability (up to 100), and additional factors (up to 600).5Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Express Entry – Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Criteria

Core human capital covers age, education, official language proficiency, and Canadian work experience. Age is front-loaded for younger candidates: maximum points run from age 20 through 29 (110 single, 100 with a partner), then drop each year, hitting zero at 45. A 35-year-old single applicant receives 77 age points against 110 for someone under 30, a 33-point gap that has to come from somewhere else.5Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Express Entry – Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Criteria

Skill transferability rewards combinations: strong language scores paired with foreign work experience, education paired with Canadian work experience, or a trade certificate paired with solid language results. The category caps at 100 points, and those points frequently decide who gets an invitation.

Additional factors is where profiles jump. A provincial or territorial nomination adds 600 points and effectively guarantees an invitation. Other boosters include a sibling who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (15 points), strong French language skills (up to 50 points), and post-secondary education completed in Canada (up to 30 points).5Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Invitation Rounds and Category-Based Draws

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) runs regular invitation rounds. Each round has a minimum CRS cutoff, and everyone at or above it receives an Invitation to Apply. Cutoffs move from round to round depending on how many invitations IRCC issues and how competitive the pool is. Your profile stays in the pool for up to 12 months; if no invitation arrives, it expires and you would need to create a new one.6Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Express Entry – Rounds of Invitations

Alongside general draws, IRCC runs category-based rounds that pull from a narrower slice of the pool. You still have to meet the eligibility criteria for one of the three programs. As of early 2026, the targeted categories are:

  • French-language proficiency (minimum score of 7 in all four abilities on the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens)
  • Healthcare and social services occupations
  • STEM occupations
  • Trade occupations
  • Education occupations
  • Transport occupations
  • Physicians with Canadian work experience
  • Senior managers with Canadian work experience
  • Researchers with Canadian work experience
  • Skilled military recruits

Most occupation-based categories require at least 12 months of full-time work experience, or the part-time equivalent, within the past three years in a single eligible occupation. That experience can be Canadian or foreign, except for physicians, senior managers, researchers, and military recruits, where Canadian experience or additional criteria apply.7Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Express Entry – Category-Based Selection

Category rounds can carry much lower cutoffs than general draws. A March 2026 French-language round invited 4,000 candidates with a minimum CRS of 393.6Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Express Entry – Rounds of Invitations

What to Prepare Before You Enter the Pool

Your profile captures your personal history, qualifications, and supporting documents, and the system uses it to calculate your CRS score. Inaccurate or incomplete information can delay or disqualify your application.

Language Tests

You prove proficiency in English, French, or both through approved standardized tests. For English, Canada accepts IELTS General Training and CELPIP General. For French, it accepts TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Each test covers reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Results must be less than two years old both when you complete your profile and when you submit your application.8Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Express Entry – Language Test Results

Educational Credential Assessment

If your education was completed outside Canada, get an Educational Credential Assessment from a designated organization such as World Education Services. It confirms your foreign credential is equivalent to a Canadian one. Institutions usually have to send sealed transcripts directly to the evaluating body, which takes weeks, so start early.9Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Educational Credential Assessment – Service Providers

National Occupational Classification Code

Your work history has to be categorized under the National Occupational Classification (NOC), which assigns a five-digit code to every job type in Canada. Pick the code that matches your actual duties, not just your title. Getting this wrong is one of the most common and most damaging mistakes. Providing false or misleading information about your duties is misrepresentation under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and carries a five-year ban from applying for permanent residence.10Employment and Social Development Canada. National Occupational Classification Hierarchy and Structure11Justice Laws Website. Immigration and Refugee Protection Act SC 2001 c 27 – Section 40

Personal History

You need a valid passport for yourself and each accompanying family member, plus details on family composition. Beyond that, you have to account for the past ten years with no chronological gaps, covering every period of employment, education, unemployment, and travel. Gaps or omissions can trigger integrity concerns and slow processing.

Proof of Funds

Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades applicants must show they can support themselves and their family after arriving, unless they hold a valid job offer and are already authorized to work in Canada. Canadian Experience Class applicants are exempt.12Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Proof of Funds for Express Entry As of the July 2025 update, the minimums in Canadian dollars are:

  • 1 family member: $15,263
  • 2 family members: $19,001
  • 3 family members: $23,360
  • 4 family members: $28,362
  • 5 family members: $32,168
  • 6 family members: $36,280
  • 7 family members: $40,392
  • Each additional member: add $4,112

Family size includes you, your spouse or common-law partner, and all dependent children, even those who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or not coming with you. You must have legal access to the funds on arrival; borrowed money does not count. Proof takes the form of official letters on bank letterhead showing account numbers, opening dates, current balances, average balances over the past six months, and any outstanding debts.12Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. The Upfront Medical Exam

Since August 21, 2025, applicants must complete a medical examination before submitting the permanent residence application. Previously, medicals were requested after the file was in.13Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Medical Examination for Permanent Residence Applicants

The exam has to be done by a panel physician on the IRCC-approved list, not your own doctor. You book directly, bring your passport, any prescription eyewear, medical reports for existing conditions, and a list of current medications. The physician submits results to IRCC and gives you a confirmation to keep. You pay all exam-related fees out of pocket, and they are not refunded if the application is refused. Results are valid for 12 months, so if you have not landed as a permanent resident within that window you may need a new exam.13Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Medical Examination for Permanent Residence Applicants

After the Invitation to Apply

An Invitation to Apply is valid for 60 days. Miss the window or fail to submit a complete application, and the invitation expires and your profile leaves the pool entirely.14Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Apply for Permanent Residence Through Express Entry

You submit high-quality scans of every document referenced in your profile. You also need police clearance certificates from every country where you or an accompanying family member aged 18 or older lived for six consecutive months or more during the past ten years. Time in Canada and time before age 18 are excluded, though an officer can request more certificates after you apply.15Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Fees

The combined processing fee and Right of Permanent Residence fee is currently $1,525 CAD per adult. Fees are increasing on April 30, 2026, with the Right of Permanent Residence fee rising by $25 to $600.16Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Medical exam fees, paid directly to the panel physician, vary by location and are separate from all of these figures.

Processing Time

The service standard for Express Entry applications is six months from submission. After you file, the system generates an Acknowledgment of Receipt confirming your file is in the queue. IRCC verifies every claim in your profile, reviews the medical results, and runs background checks. When everything clears, you receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence.

Confirming Permanent Residence

If your application is approved while you are in Canada, IRCC sends two emails inviting you to finalize your status through the Permanent Residence Portal. You sign in, confirm you are physically in Canada, provide a Canadian mailing address for your PR card, and upload a professional-quality digital photo. IRCC then issues an electronic Confirmation of Permanent Residence, which can take a few weeks to appear.18Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Permanent Residence Portal

You have to be physically in Canada to confirm your status. If you leave before receiving the electronic confirmation, contact IRCC using the email address in your invitation before traveling. PR cards are mailed only to the applicant’s Canadian address, not to representatives, family members, or P.O. boxes, with limited exceptions for rural areas without direct mail delivery. As of early 2026, a new PR card takes about 46 days to process.18Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Permanent Residence Portal

Inadmissibility Can Sink a Strong File

A high CRS score does not override criminal or medical inadmissibility, and both surface during background checks.

On the criminal side, Canadian immigration law treats certain convictions, including impaired driving, as grounds for inadmissibility. Your options depend on how much time has passed since you completed your sentence. After at least five years, you can apply for individual rehabilitation by showing you are unlikely to reoffend. In some cases, you may be deemed rehabilitated automatically if enough time has passed and the offense would carry a maximum prison sentence of less than ten years under Canadian law. If fewer than five years have passed, a Temporary Resident Permit may allow entry when an officer decides your reason for being in Canada outweighs the risk.19Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Overcome Criminal Convictions

On the medical side, an applicant can be found inadmissible if the estimated cost of treating a condition exceeds a threshold set at three times the Canadian average for health and social services per person, measured over five years. IRCC updates the threshold annually based on data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Conditions requiring only medication that the applicant can manage themselves may not trigger a finding of excessive demand.
