ET vs CT: Split States, Conversion, and the 1-Hour Gap

Eastern Time is always one hour ahead of Central Time. When it’s 3:00 PM in New York, it’s 2:00 PM in Chicago, and that’s true in January, July, and every week in between. The comparison of Eastern Time vs. Central Time is one of the simplest in American time zone math: subtract an hour going west, add an hour going east, and you’re done.

Why the One-Hour Gap Never Changes

Both zones observe Daylight Saving Time on the same schedule. Clocks spring forward on the second Sunday in March and fall back on the first Sunday in November.1National Conference of State Legislatures. Daylight Saving Time State Legislation Because the switch happens on the same day in both zones and by the same amount, the gap between them stays locked at one hour.

The underlying offsets from Coordinated Universal Time explain why. Eastern Standard Time is UTC−5 and Eastern Daylight Time is UTC−4. Central Standard Time is UTC−6 and Central Daylight Time is UTC−5. EDT and CST share the UTC−5 offset on paper, but they never share a calendar: EDT runs from March into early November, and CST covers November through March. Eastern and Central are never accidentally on the same clock.

Which States Are in Each Zone

Seventeen states sit entirely in Eastern Time: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. Washington, D.C., is on Eastern Time too.

Ten states are fully in Central Time: Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota are mostly Central, with western counties on Mountain Time.

The Five Split States

Five states straddle the Eastern-Central line, and the official boundary is drawn by federal regulation rather than by obvious geography.2eCFR. 49 CFR 71.5 – Boundary Line Between Eastern and Central Zones

  • Florida is mostly Eastern. The panhandle west of the Apalachicola River runs on Central Time.
  • Indiana is mostly Eastern, but twelve counties observe Central. In the northwest: Jasper, Lake, LaPorte, Newton, Porter, and Starke. In the southwest: Gibson, Perry, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick.3IN.gov. Indiana Time Zone Information
  • Kentucky is Eastern in the east and Central in the west, with Bowling Green, Owensboro, and Paducah on Central.
  • Michigan is almost entirely Eastern. Four Upper Peninsula counties bordering Wisconsin (Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, and Menominee) follow Central.2eCFR. 49 CFR 71.5 – Boundary Line Between Eastern and Central Zones
  • Tennessee splits east-west. East Tennessee is Eastern; Middle and West Tennessee, including Nashville and Memphis, are Central.

If you live or work near one of these lines, confirm the zone for your specific county. Phones and GPS units usually get it right on their own. Wall clocks and manually set devices don’t.

Converting Between Eastern and Central

Subtract one hour from Eastern to get Central. Add one hour to Central to get Eastern. A 9:00 AM Eastern call starts at 8:00 AM Central. A 5:30 PM Central flight departure shows as 6:30 PM for someone tracking it from the East Coast.

What “8/7c” Means on TV

American broadcast networks send a single eastern feed that reaches both zones at the same instant. A show listed as “8/7c” airs at 8:00 PM Eastern and 7:00 PM Central at the same real-world moment. Eastern is the default reference for national scheduling, and “7 Central” is tacked on so Central viewers don’t have to convert. Mountain and Pacific get a separate delayed feed, which is why the shorthand names only two times.

Setting Meetings Across the Line

State the time in one zone and spell out the other: “2:00 PM ET / 1:00 PM CT.” Google Calendar and Outlook handle conversions well when each participant’s zone is set correctly. Shared invites sent without a time zone label are where most of the mix-ups happen.

When the One-Hour Difference Actually Matters

For most daily purposes, an hour is easy to manage. A few situations don’t forgive a slip.

Federal court electronic filing deadlines run on the court’s local time, not the filer’s. If you’re filing from Chicago into a federal court in New York, the cutoff is midnight Eastern, which is 11:00 PM on your Central clock. The Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure say the last day for electronic filing ends “at midnight in the court’s time zone.”4Legal Information Institute (LII). Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure 26 – Computing and Extending Time Missing that because you assumed your own zone applied is hard to undo.

Financial markets keep Eastern hours. The New York Stock Exchange opens at 9:30 AM ET and closes at 4:00 PM ET, which is 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM in Central. Earnings releases, options expirations, and after-hours windows all reference Eastern, so anyone investing from a Central state has to keep the offset in mind.

Could the Gap Ever Go Away?

The Sunshine Protection Act, which would make Daylight Saving Time permanent nationwide, was reintroduced in the Senate in January 2025.5Congress.gov. S.29 – 119th Congress (2025-2026) Sunshine Protection Act of 2025 A previous version passed the Senate unanimously in 2022 but stalled in the House. Even if it becomes law, the one-hour gap between Eastern and Central stays. Permanent DST would lock Eastern at UTC−4 and Central at UTC−5 year-round, and the clock-changing weekends would end. The difference between the two zones would not.

The only way the gap actually disappears is if the zone boundaries themselves were redrawn to merge Eastern and Central, and no serious proposal has suggested that. For every practical purpose, one hour is a permanent feature of the map.
