ESTA Approval Time: 72-Hour Window, Results, and Delays

The ESTA approval time is up to 72 hours from the moment you submit, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.¹ Some decisions come back much faster, but real-time approvals are no longer offered and no service can guarantee a quicker result. Apply at least three days before your flight, and preferably as soon as you book.

Why 72 Hours Is the Number to Plan Around

CBP used to return many ESTA decisions almost instantly. That changed. The agency now states that real-time approvals are no longer available and that travelers should allow up to 72 hours for a determination.¹ Some applications still clear faster. There’s no way to predict which ones will, and no mechanism to speed things up.

Third-party services that advertise expedited ESTA processing are misleading. CBP has confirmed that using a private service does not result in faster approval.² The 72-hour window is the same whether you file directly on the government site or pay a markup elsewhere.

The Three Possible Results

After you submit, the system returns one of three statuses:

Authorization Approved. You are eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program. This does not guarantee entry — a CBP officer at the port of entry makes the final admission decision.²
Authorization Pending. The system could not make an immediate decision and your application is under manual review. This is not a denial. CBP states that a determination is usually available within 72 hours.³
Travel Not Authorized. Your application has been denied. You cannot travel under the Visa Waiver Program and will need to apply for a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate instead.⁴

What Pushes an Application Into a Longer Review

The most common reason an application shifts to pending is a name or date-of-birth match against a security database. If your biographical data resembles a flagged record, a CBP officer needs to sort out manually whether you’re the person in question. Simple data entry mistakes can also trigger manual review, because the system can’t cleanly match your information: a wrong digit in a passport number, a transposed birth date, and the file gets kicked out for a human to look at.

More serious issues lead to outright denial. Prior immigration violations like overstaying a previous visit, or a criminal history, will typically result in a Travel Not Authorized response. CBP does not disclose the specific reason for a denial.

How to Check Your Status

You can check an application at any time at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Click “Check Existing Application,” then “Check Individual Status.” You’ll need your passport number, date of birth, and the application number you received when you submitted. If you lost the application number, click “I do not know the application number” and enter your passport details, citizenship, passport issuance and expiration dates, and date of birth instead.³

When to Submit

CBP’s recommendation is to apply as soon as travel plans are made, not when departure is imminent.⁵ Since an approved ESTA is good for two years, there’s no downside to filing months ahead.

The practical reason to apply early is what happens if you get denied. Getting a nonimmigrant visa through a U.S. Embassy or Consulate is not quick. State Department data shows wait times for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa interview vary widely by location: some embassies have appointments available within a couple of weeks, while others have backlogs stretching well over a year.⁶ If you apply for an ESTA the week before your flight and get denied, the trip is almost certainly off.

How Long an Approval Lasts

An approved ESTA is valid for two years from the date of authorization, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During that window you can make multiple trips to the U.S. without reapplying. Each stay is still limited to 90 days.⁷

You need a new ESTA if you get a new passport, change your name, change your country of citizenship, or if any of your answers to the VWP eligibility questions change. Citizens of Brunei and Hungary receive one-year validity rather than two.⁷ Most personal details on an existing approval can be updated online without a new fee; the exceptions that require a fresh application are passport details, country of citizenship, and date of birth.⁸

If You’re Denied

A denial means you’re not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, not that you’re barred from the United States. The next step is to apply for a nonimmigrant visa, typically a B-1/B-2, at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. The embassy evaluates your application independently, and plenty of travelers with denied ESTAs receive visas.⁴

There’s no formal waiting period before submitting a new ESTA, but reapplying when nothing has changed produces the same result. CBP is clear that if your circumstances haven’t changed, a new application will also be denied.⁴ Fix the underlying issue, whether that’s correcting inaccurate information or resolving an eligibility question, before trying again.

Skip the Middleman Sites

CBP has warned about third-party websites that mimic official U.S. government pages and charge inflated fees for ESTA applications.⁹ These sites typically charge $50 to $100 or more for a service that costs $21 on the real site, and they do nothing to speed up processing. The application fee is $4 whether or not you’re approved, with an additional $17 travel promotion fee charged only on approval.¹⁰ The only official application site is esta.cbp.dhs.gov; look for the .gov domain and the HTTPS lock before entering any personal information.
