The sales tax in Edmonton is 5%, and that 5% is the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). Alberta has no provincial sales tax, no HST, and Edmonton adds no municipal sales tax, so the number on your receipt is the federal rate and nothing more. A few categories are taxed at 0% or fully exempt, and hotel stays carry a separate tourism levy on top, but for almost everything else you buy in the city, 5% is the whole story.
Why the Rate Is Only 5%
Alberta is one of the provinces that relies entirely on the federal GST rather than layering its own tax on top. The GST is set under the Excise Tax Act and administered by the Canada Revenue Agency at a uniform 5% across the country.1Canada Revenue Agency. Charge and Collect the GST/HST In most other provinces, consumers pay a combined rate between 12% and 15% through either an HST or a PST added to the GST.
The difference shows up fast on larger purchases. A $1,000 laptop in Edmonton costs $1,050 after tax. The same laptop in Ontario, under 13% HST, costs $1,130. In Nova Scotia, at 15% HST, it costs $1,150. Multiply that gap across a vehicle, a kitchen renovation, or a set of appliances and the Alberta advantage adds up.
What the 5% Applies To
Most goods and services sold in Edmonton carry the standard 5% GST. Electronics, clothing, furniture, and new vehicles are all taxable. So are professional services from accountants, lawyers, and contractors. Digital products fall under the same rules, including streaming subscriptions, software licences, and downloaded content.2Canada Revenue Agency. Exports – Tangible Personal Property
Since July 2021, non-resident digital platforms selling to Canadian consumers also collect and remit GST. If you subscribe to a streaming service or buy digital goods from a company based outside Canada, the tax is either built into the price or added at checkout.3Canada Revenue Agency. What’s Zero-Rated or Exempt
Not everything sold in Edmonton attracts the 5% charge. The Excise Tax Act splits tax-free items into two groups. For a shopper the outcome is the same (no GST on the receipt), but the label matters to the business selling the item.
Zero-Rated Supplies
Zero-rated goods are taxable at 0%. You pay nothing at the register, and the seller can still recover the GST it paid on related expenses. The main categories are:
- Basic groceries such as milk, bread, and fresh produce
- Prescription drugs and drug-dispensing fees
- Certain medical devices, including hearing aids and artificial teeth
These are set out in the CRA’s classification of supply types.4Canada Revenue Agency. Type of Supply Prepared meals, snack foods, and carbonated drinks are not basic groceries and are taxed at the full 5%.
Exempt Supplies
Exempt supplies are not taxed at all, and the business providing them cannot claim credits on its own GST costs. The key exempt categories include:
- Long-term residential rent, meaning leases of one month or longer5Justice Laws Website. Excise Tax Act RSC 1985 c E-15 – Schedule V
- Healthcare services from physicians, dentists, nurses, physiotherapists, and psychologists6Canada Revenue Agency. Qualifying Health Care Supplies and the Application of the GST/HST
- Educational services at vocational schools, colleges, and universities
- Child care for children 14 and under, for periods under 24 hours per day
- Most financial services, including banking, lending, and insurance products
Exports
Goods shipped from Edmonton to customers outside Canada are zero-rated. The seller charges no GST on the sale and can still claim credits on the costs of producing or acquiring the exported goods.7Canada Revenue Agency. Exports – Services and Intangible Personal Property The same treatment covers most services consumed outside Canada, provided the business keeps proper export documentation.
Housing and New Construction
The sale of a used, owner-occupied home in Edmonton is almost always exempt from GST. If you bought or built a home for personal use and later sell it, you are not considered a “builder” under the Excise Tax Act and no GST applies.8Canada Revenue Agency. Sales by Individuals of Owner-Occupied Homes Even a home used partly for business (say, a home office) stays exempt on sale as long as you used the property primarily, meaning more than 50%, as your residence.
New construction is different. Buyers of brand-new homes or substantially renovated properties pay GST on the purchase price. A federal new housing rebate can offset part of that cost, provided the home will be your primary residence and its fair market value at substantial completion is under $450,000.9Canada Revenue Agency. GST/HST New Housing Rebate In Edmonton’s market, plenty of new builds sit near or above that threshold, so it’s worth checking eligibility early in the purchase.
Hotels and Short-Term Rentals
Accommodation is the one place your Edmonton bill goes above 5%. Alberta imposes a separate tourism levy on hotels, motels, and short-term rental platforms. As of April 1, 2026, that levy increased from 4% to 6% under Budget 2026.10Alberta.ca. Tourism Levy
The combined tax on a hotel stay booked after March 31, 2026, is therefore 11%: the 5% GST plus the 6% tourism levy. On a $200-per-night room, that’s $22 per night in tax. Bookings made before April 1, 2026, still get the old 4% rate even if the stay itself falls after that date, and contracts executed on or before March 23, 2026, with locked-in pricing also stay at 4%.10Alberta.ca. If You Sell Goods or Services in Edmonton
Small sellers often ask when they have to start charging GST. The threshold is $30,000 in taxable supplies. The CRA measures it two ways: if you exceed $30,000 in a single calendar quarter, you must start charging GST immediately on the sale that pushed you over; if you exceed $30,000 across four consecutive calendar quarters without doing it in any single quarter, you become a mandatory registrant at the end of the month following the quarter that crossed the line. Below $30,000, you are a “small supplier” and registration is optional.11Canada Revenue Agency. When to Register for and Start Charging the GST/HST
Registration is done through the CRA’s Business Registration Online portal or on Form RC1. You’ll need the business’s legal name, the owner’s social insurance number, a description of your activities, and the date you first exceeded the small supplier limit.12Canada Revenue Agency. RC1 Request for a Business Number and Certain Program Accounts
Some businesses under the threshold register voluntarily so they can claim input tax credits on the GST they pay for equipment, supplies, and overhead. The trade-off is that you must then charge GST on your sales, file returns on schedule, and stay registered for at least one year before cancelling.13Canada.ca. Register Voluntarily for a GST/HST Account For a freelancer whose clients are other GST-registered businesses, the extra 5% is a wash for the customer and a real recovery for the seller. For someone selling directly to individual consumers, an added 5% can be a harder sell against competitors who stay under the threshold.
