An EA or Electronic Arts charge on your credit card is a purchase tied to an EA account: a game download, an EA Play subscription renewal, or an in-game buy made on a payment method saved to that account. Before you call your bank, log in and check your EA order history. That single step usually tells you whether you’re looking at a forgotten subscription, a family member’s spending, or something that shouldn’t be there at all.
What the Charge Probably Is
Four sources account for most surprise EA charges, and knowing which one you’re dealing with changes what you do next.
- An EA Play subscription, which costs $5.99 per month or $39.99 per year and renews automatically until canceled.1Electronic Arts. EA Play Membership
- In-game purchases in titles like EA Sports FC or Apex Legends. Virtual currency bundles run up to $99.99, and small buys stack quickly.2Insider Gaming. EA Skate Microtransactions Range From E5-E99 for In-Game Currency
- A full game download, typically $69.99 for a new release, showing up as one line.
- Purchases by someone in your household using a linked payment method. This is the pattern behind clusters of small, rapid charges over a weekend.
The charge generally appears on statements as “Electronic Arts,” “EA,” or “EA” followed by a game title or “Redwood City.”
Check Your EA Order History First
Sign in to your EA account and open your order history through the EA Help site under “Orders and rewards.”3Electronic Arts. How to View Your EA Order History and Refund Status Each entry lists the item, date, amount, and status. Match those against your statement.
If nothing in your history matches, and no one in your household bought anything, treat the account as potentially compromised. EA’s fraud guidance is to change your password immediately, turn on two-factor authentication, and reach EA support through the “Contact us” link on the help site.4Electronic Arts. Getting a Refund From EA
EA offers refunds on eligible full game downloads bought through the EA app or EA.com, but the windows are short and the exclusions matter. You can request a refund:5Electronic Arts. How to Get a Refund for EA Games
- Within 24 hours of first launching the game.
- Within 14 days of purchase if you haven’t launched it yet.
- Any time before release date for pre-orders you haven’t launched.
- Within 72 hours of first launching a new EA game bought within 30 days of release, if technical problems on EA’s end prevent you from playing.
The catch that trips up most people: downloadable content, virtual currency like FC Points or Apex Coins, and special edition bundles that include virtual currency are generally not refundable when bought separately.5Electronic Arts. How to Get a Refund for EA Games A bundle refund typically requires returning everything together. So the most common surprise charge, an in-game currency purchase, is also the hardest to reverse.
To file, go to the EA Help refund page. You’ll need the email tied to your EA account, the Order ID from your confirmation email, the purchase date, and the last four digits of the payment method. Open the “Orders” section, select the item, and start the request.3Electronic Arts. How to View Your EA Order History and Refund Status Say why plainly; vague reasons slow the review. Most requests are handled within 24 hours of purchase, sometimes up to 72 hours.6Electronic Arts. Electronic Arts Terms of Sale Approved refunds take up to 14 working days to land back on the original payment method.
Console and Retail Purchases
EA cannot refund purchases made through PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo storefronts, or from retailers like Target or Best Buy.5Electronic Arts. Cancel EA Play if It’s a Subscription
If the charge is a renewal, canceling stops future billing. You keep EA Play benefits through the end of your current billing period and can reverse the cancellation before that date.9Electronic Arts. How to Cancel an EA Play Membership Where you cancel depends on where you signed up:
- On PC through the EA app: sign in to your EA account, open Subscriptions and Memberships, and select “Cancel membership.”
- On PlayStation: sign in to your PlayStation account, open Subscriptions, and select “Turn Off Auto-Renew” next to EA Play.
- On Xbox: sign in to your Microsoft account, open “Services & subscriptions,” select “Manage” next to EA Play, and cancel.
EA doesn’t publish a minimum notice period before renewal, so cancel well ahead of the billing date to avoid timing problems.9Electronic Arts. How to Cancel an EA Play Membership
Preventing the Next Surprise Charge
Most unexpected EA charges come from two situations: kids spending inside games, and compromised accounts.
For household spending, the EA app’s “Families” feature lets you manage teen accounts with a default spending limit of zero, meaning nothing goes through until you raise it.10Electronic Arts. Parental Controls You can set a monthly cap and sign up for weekly activity reports on what your family plays and spends. Set it up through the EA app’s parental controls page. On consoles, layer the platform’s own controls on top: PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo each offer purchase restrictions for child accounts.
For account security, turn on two-factor authentication from the Security and Privacy page in your EA account settings. You can choose email, an authenticator app, or text message.11Electronic Arts. How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Your EA Account Save the backup codes EA provides; they’re your only way back in if you lose your verification method. Remove any saved payment methods you don’t actively use.
Chargebacks Through Your Bank
Filing a bank chargeback instead of using EA’s refund process carries real risk. EA’s User Agreement allows termination for violations of the agreement, and a terminated account loses access to its entire digital library with no refund.12Electronic Arts. User Agreement The Terms of Sale separately state that accounts may be suspended or terminated if EA detects fraudulent payment activity.13Electronic Arts. Terms of Sale Players who initiate chargebacks commonly report losing access to online features across all their EA games until the disputed amount is repaid.
You do have legal protections. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you can dispute unauthorized charges in writing with your credit card issuer within 60 days of the statement date. The issuer must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and resolve it within two billing cycles.14Federal Trade Commission. What To Do if You’re Billed for Things You Never Got or You Get Unordered Products If someone actually stole your payment information, a bank dispute is the right tool. If the charge came from your kid or a subscription you forgot about, a chargeback will likely cost you more than the original amount once your EA account is locked.
Work EA’s refund and support channels first. Reserve the bank dispute for genuine fraud where your account was compromised and EA support can’t resolve it.
