The E4 rank in the US military is the fourth enlisted pay grade, paying between $3,142 and $3,815 a month in base pay in 2026 depending on years of service. It is the point where the military stops treating you as brand new and starts expecting you to know your job, and in some branches it is also where formal leadership authority begins. Every branch shares the same E4 pay grade, but the title, the NCO status, and the way you get promoted all change depending on the uniform you wear.
What E4 Is Called in Each Branch
The Army is the only branch that splits E4 into two ranks. A Specialist (SPC) is a technical expert who typically does not supervise others. A Corporal (CPL) holds the same pay grade but is a non-commissioned officer with direct leadership authority, often running a small team. Same pay, different job.
In the Marine Corps, E4 is Corporal (Cpl), and every Marine Corporal is an NCO. The Navy and Coast Guard both call their E4s Petty Officer Third Class (PO3), a title that carries supervisory standing. The Air Force uses Senior Airman (SrA), which is not an NCO rank. The Space Force calls its E4 Specialist 4 (Spc4), also without NCO status, because both the Air Force and Space Force reserve NCO classification for E5 and above.1Space Force. The practical difference matters. An Army Corporal or a Marine Corporal is responsible for the performance, training, and welfare of the junior troops under them, and their promotion evaluations reflect that. A Senior Airman or Specialist 4 is expected to mentor newer people informally but does not carry the formal authority of an NCO.
2026 E4 Pay and Allowances
Base pay is set by the Department of Defense and does not vary by branch. An Army E4 and a Navy E4 with the same years of service earn the same base pay. Following the 3.8% raise in 2026, monthly base pay for an E4 is:2DFAS. Enlisted Members Basic Pay

Base pay is only part of what an E4 takes home. Every enlisted service member receives a Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) of $476.95 a month to cover food costs.3Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Basic Allowance for Housing An E4 with dependents in a high-cost area like San Diego receives thousands more per month in BAH than one at a rural installation. Neither BAS nor BAH is taxed, which makes the effective compensation higher than base pay alone suggests.
How You Get Promoted to E4
The path to E4 depends heavily on your branch. Some branches promote automatically on time in service. One makes you compete for it.
Army
Promotion to Specialist is automatic once a soldier has 24 months of time in service and 6 months of time in grade as a Private First Class (E3).5U.S. Army. Because Corporal is an NCO rank, soldiers are selected based on leadership potential and unit needs, and they may be required to complete the Basic Leader Course.
Navy
The Navy overhauled its apprentice advancement system in July 2024. Promotion to E4 now requires 30 months of cumulative time in service, regardless of entry rank, and happens automatically through the personnel system as long as the sailor keeps a commanding officer’s recommendation for retention.6MyNavy HR. Air Force
Promotion to Senior Airman requires 8 months of time in grade as an Airman First Class and at least one year of total service.7Defense.gov. Enlisted Promotion Requirements No professional military education is required at this level.
Marine Corps
The Marine Corps handles E4 differently. Promotion to Corporal is competitive, not time-based. Marines accumulate a composite score built from rifle qualification, physical fitness, duty proficiency marks, and time in service. Each month, Headquarters Marine Corps publishes cutting scores by military occupational specialty, and only Marines whose composite score meets or exceeds the threshold are promoted. In competitive job fields, reaching Corporal can take significantly longer than reaching E4 in other branches.
Housing at the E4 Level
Where you live as an E4 depends on your branch, your marital status, and sometimes your time in service. Single E4s without dependents are generally required to live in barracks or on-base housing, but the rules differ:8Military OneSource. Military Housing: First Time Living on an Installation
- Army and Marine Corps: single E5s and below live in barracks, which includes all single E4s.
- Navy and Coast Guard: single E4s and below are assigned to unaccompanied housing.
- Air Force: single E4s with fewer than three years of service live in dorms. After three years, a Senior Airman can typically move off-base and receive BAH.
E4s who are married or have dependents are authorized to live off-base and receive BAH regardless of branch. That produces one of the biggest income gaps at this pay grade. A married E4 collecting BAH and BAS takes home substantially more in total compensation than a single E4 living in the barracks and eating at the dining facility instead of drawing BAS.
Getting Past E4
Promotion from E4 to E5 works nothing like promotion to E4. This is where automatic advancement ends in most branches and competitive selection begins. E5 is also the first NCO rank in the Air Force, Space Force, and Navy, so the jump comes with real leadership responsibility no matter which uniform you wear.
In the Army, an E4 becomes eligible to appear before a promotion board for Sergeant at 34 months of time in service and 10 months of time in grade in the primary zone. Actual pin-on requires 36 months of time in service and 12 months of time in grade. Soldiers must also meet or exceed a cutoff score for their specific job specialty, which fluctuates monthly based on Army needs.9Army Cutoff Scores. High Year of Tenure
Every branch enforces a High Year of Tenure policy, sometimes called “up or out,” that sets a maximum number of years you can serve at a given rank before the military separates you. For E4s, that creates a deadline for earning promotion to E5. In the Navy, an E4 can serve up to 10 years on active duty before hitting HYT.10MyNavy HR. Army and Marine Corps HYT policies also apply at the E4 level, and the specific limits are updated periodically, so check with your branch’s personnel command for current numbers.
HYT catches people off guard. An E4 who is comfortable and not actively pursuing promotion can face involuntary separation years before they planned to leave. If you want a military career, getting past E4 is not optional.
