DTE Refund: Automatic Outage Credits and Damage Claims

A DTE refund for a power outage usually comes as an automatic $42-per-day bill credit, applied by DTE Energy when your electric service fails to meet reliability standards set by the Michigan Public Service Commission. You do not have to file a claim for it in most cases. Separate rules cover property damage, and storm-related losses like spoiled food are not reimbursed at all.

When You Qualify for an Automatic Outage Credit

The credit covers electric service only, for both residential and commercial accounts. You can qualify two ways: one outage that runs too long, or too many outages in a year.

For a single extended outage, the threshold depends on how widespread the event is:

  • Normal conditions (less than 1% of DTE customers affected): more than 16 hours without power.
  • Gray sky conditions (1% to 10% of customers affected): more than 48 hours.
  • Catastrophic conditions (10% or more affected): more than 96 hours.

The MPSC scales these thresholds because DTE has more crews available for a neighborhood problem than for a region-wide storm.1Michigan Public Service Commission. MPSC Raises Bill Credit to $42 for Customers Experiencing Long or Repeat Outages

The second path is frequency. If your address has more than six sustained outages within a single year, you qualify for a credit regardless of how long any one of them lasted, as long as your account was active at that address the entire time.1Michigan Public Service Commission. How Much You Get and When It Lands

The credit is $42 per day, effective October 1, 2025. If your power was out during normal conditions for 40 hours straight, you cleared the 16-hour threshold by roughly a full day and earn one $42 credit. Stay out for 64 hours and you’d get credits for two qualifying days.1Michigan Public Service Commission. The frequency credit works differently. Hitting more than six outages in a year earns a single $42 credit rather than a per-day amount.

Because the credit is automatic, it appears on your bill without a request. Most qualifying credits show up within one or two billing cycles. After widespread storms, DTE may take up to 90 days to investigate and post the credit.2DTE Energy. What DTE Will Not Refund

This is where expectations often collide with reality. DTE disclaims responsibility for damages caused by storms or weather-related conditions. That includes:

  • Spoiled food from a lost freezer or refrigerator.
  • Appliances damaged by voltage surges.
  • Hotel or lodging costs during an outage.
  • Lost wages or business revenue.
  • Tree-trimming debris removal.

If your groceries thawed during a three-day ice storm, DTE will not reimburse you. Commercial customers who lost revenue during the same storm are in the same position. DTE recommends contacting your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance company to see whether those losses are covered under an existing policy.2DTE Energy. Damages and Reliability Credits

Non-Storm Damage Claims

DTE does accept damage claims when the loss was not storm-related, such as equipment failure on DTE’s end that damaged your property. You file by submitting a damage claim form with supporting invoices, receipts, and photos. DTE investigates and issues a decision within 30 days. Filing a claim is not a guarantee of payment.2DTE Energy. Damages and Reliability Credits

What to Do When a Credit Is Missing

Check your bill’s summary of charges section first. The credit is a separate line item and easy to miss on electronic bills with collapsed sections. If you believe you qualified but the credit hasn’t appeared after two billing cycles, contact DTE residential customer service at 800-477-4747.5DTE Energy. Help Center DTE also offers live chat Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Have your account number ready and be specific about which outage you’re disputing. Note the date power went out, the time it was restored, and how many outages you’ve had in the past 12 months if you’re claiming the frequency credit.

If DTE addresses your concern and you’re still unsatisfied, or the same problem keeps recurring, you can escalate to the MPSC. The Commission accepts complaints through an online form, by phone at 800-292-9555, or by mail to MPSC Customer Assistance, P.O. Box 30221, Lansing, MI 48909. Filing online shares your contact information with the utility so the case can move faster; the phone and mail options are available if you want to remain anonymous.6Michigan Public Service Commission. Who Is Not Covered

The MPSC’s outage credit rules apply only to customers of investor-owned utilities regulated by the Commission, which includes DTE Energy and Consumers Energy. If your electricity comes from an electric cooperative or a municipal utility, these credit rules do not apply.7Michigan Public Service Commission. Customers of MPSC-Regulated Utilities Eligible for Bill Credits for Lengthy Power Outages From Northern Michigan Ice Storm Natural gas service outages are handled under a separate framework and do not trigger this credit. And if your outage falls short of the required hours for its event category, no credit is due. An outage of 15 hours during normal conditions, however disruptive, does not clear the 16-hour threshold.
