If you’re a military sponsor setting up DS Logon, you can still register through the Defense Manpower Data Center and use the credential on Department of Defense sites like milConnect and the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal. Two things have changed, though, and both matter. The VA removed DS Logon as a sign-in option on November 18, 2025, so you now need Login.gov or ID.me for anything on VA.gov.1Veterans Affairs. Prepare For VAs Secure Sign-In Changes And on the DoD side, sites are migrating to a newer credential called myAuth over the course of 2026.2Soldier for Life. Ask Joe Column Registering now still makes sense if you need DoD access today, but plan on setting up the replacement credentials as well.
Who Qualifies as a Sponsor
DS Logon is open to anyone at least 18 years old who is affiliated with DoD or VA and listed in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). That covers active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, retirees, veterans, DoD civilians, and contractors, along with spouses, surviving spouses, and adult children receiving DoD benefits.3TRICARE. DS Logon: DoD Self-Service Credential for Military Sponsors
DEERS enrollment isn’t optional. The registration system checks your identity against DEERS records, so if you aren’t in the database, or your name, date of birth, or Social Security number on file is wrong, registration will fail regardless of what other ID you present.4Defense Manpower Data Center. DS Logon Account Creation Guide Fix DEERS first. Contact updates go through 800-538-9552; adding or removing family members requires an in-person visit to an ID card office by the sponsor.5TRICARE. Basic vs. Premium: Get Premium
Accounts come in two tiers. A Basic account is read-only and limited. You can check a claim status or look up an exchange purchase, and that’s essentially it. A Premium account is what you actually want as a sponsor: it opens personal health records, current benefit rates, and every website that accepts DS Logon.6Department of Defense. DoD Manual 1341.02, Volume 1 – DoD Identity Management: DoD Self-Service (DS) Logon Program and Credential
The difference is identity proofing. Basic requires only that your name and date of birth match DEERS. Premium requires stronger proof through one of three routes: a Common Access Card, a remote credit-history quiz, or in-person verification at a RAPIDS station.6Department of Defense. How to Register
Registration takes place on the Defense Manpower Data Center portal, and you’ll choose one of three verification paths.4Defense Manpower Data Center. DS Logon Account Creation Guide
The fastest path for a sponsor with a CAC is CAC registration. Insert the card into a smart card reader and the digital certificate verifies you instantly, and you land at Premium level right away.
Without a CAC, email registration uses the address on file in DEERS. The system mails an activation code to your DEERS address, which typically arrives in five to seven business days.7Defense Manpower Data Center. DS Logon Email Registration Step 3
Remote identity proofing asks four questions drawn from your credit history within a time limit and requires your consent to a one-time credit profile check, which does not affect your credit score. Answer correctly and you get Premium access on the spot.4Defense Manpower Data Center. DS Logon Account Creation Guide
Once verification succeeds, you’ll create a password and set security questions for recovery. Passwords expire every 60 days.8Defense Manpower Data Center. myAuth Account Creation Guide
Don’t Get Locked Out
Too many failed attempts at the remote credit-history quiz triggers a 31-day lockout that the Customer Contact Center cannot lift. Trying again during that window restarts the 31 days.9DS Logon. DS Logon FAQs
The quiz genuinely trips up people with thin credit files, recent name changes, or new addresses. If the questions aren’t matching what you remember, stop before you burn through your attempts. Switch to email registration, or make an appointment at a RAPIDS station for in-person proofing. For in-person verification, bring two I-9 documents: a primary photo ID issued by a federal or state government, such as a driver’s license, passport, or military dependent card, plus a secondary document like a Social Security card, birth certificate, or non-photo ID. Tell the Verifying Official you need a DS Logon account and give them a unique email address.9DS Logon. DS Logon FAQs
What DS Logon Still Gets You
On DoD sites, DS Logon continues to work until myAuth fully replaces it. The two portals sponsors use most:
milConnect lets you update DEERS contact information, check enrollment status, and enroll in or change TRICARE plans.10TRICARE Newsroom. TRICARE Logins: Know How To Access Portals and Manage Your Benefit
The MHS GENESIS Patient Portal gives you around-the-clock access to medical and dental records from military hospitals and clinics. You can book or cancel appointments, request prescription refills, view lab results and clinical notes, message your care team, and complete pre-visit questionnaires.11Defense Health Agency. What DS Logon no longer gets you: anything on VA.gov. Disability claims, education benefits, and VA health care management all require Login.gov or ID.me as of November 18, 2025.1Veterans Affairs. Set Up the Replacements Now
Even if your DS Logon is working today, two credentials are worth setting up in parallel so nothing catches you at a bad moment. Create a Login.gov or ID.me account for VA services if you don’t already have one. And when a DoD site prompts you to establish myAuth credentials, do it then rather than waiting for the old credential to stop working. The myAuth system requires a password plus a second authentication factor at every sign-in, and it still enforces the 60-day password expiration.8Defense Manpower Data Center. myAuth Account Creation Guide
