Dreamstyle Remodeling: Shutdown, Chapter 7, and Customer Recovery

Dreamstyle Remodeling’s bankruptcy came through its parent company, HomeRenew Buyer, Inc. (doing business as Renovo Home Partners), which filed for Chapter 7 liquidation on November 3, 2025 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The filing followed the sudden October 28, 2025 shutdown of Dreamstyle and five other Renovo-owned companies, leaving employees without jobs and customers with unfinished projects. A court-approved procedure now allows former customers to seek relief from the automatic stay so they can pursue claims against state contractor recovery funds.

The Sudden Shutdown

On October 28, 2025, Dreamstyle Remodeling and five affiliated Renovo companies ceased operations without warning. In California, installation crews were pulled off jobs mid-project, leaving customers with demolished bathrooms and open walls. The California Employment Development Department did not receive the advance layoff notice (a WARN notice) that state law typically requires for mass layoffs.1ABC 10News San Diego. The Chapter 7 Filing

Six days after the shutdown, HomeRenew Buyer, Inc. and its affiliates, including Dreamstyle Remodeling of California, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in Delaware. The parent entity reported liabilities between $100 million and $500 million against assets of less than $100,000. Ricardo Palacio was appointed Chapter 7 trustee.3Qualified Remodeler. Chapter 7 is a liquidation proceeding, not a reorganization. The trustee’s job is to collect and sell whatever assets exist and distribute the proceeds to creditors in the priority order set by the Bankruptcy Code. Given the reported asset-to-liability gap, unsecured creditors, which is the category most customers fall into, are unlikely to see meaningful direct recovery from the estate.

How Customers Can Pursue Recovery

On May 19, 2026, Judge Thomas M. Horan of the Delaware Bankruptcy Court approved Stay Relief Procedures designed to let former customers pursue recovery outside the bankruptcy estate. A customer submits a declaration to the trustee’s counsel at Ashby & Geddes in Wilmington, Delaware, asking the court to lift the automatic bankruptcy stay so the customer can file a claim against a state contractor recovery fund or similar consumer protection program. If no party objects within ten days, the stay lifts automatically, and the court waives all filing fees for these declarations.4Minnesota Attorney General. Renovo Home Partners Stay Relief Procedures Order

The order specifically names the Minnesota Contractor Recovery Fund and directs that the Minnesota Attorney General’s office and Department of Labor be served with related filings. The trustee is authorized to set up similar procedures for consumer protection funds in other states, so customers outside Minnesota should ask about the process for the recovery program in their own state.

What to Check in Your State

Many states operate contractor recovery or guaranty funds financed by contractor licensing fees. These funds are designed to compensate homeowners harmed by licensed contractors when the contractor cannot pay. Eligibility, caps, and deadlines vary. If you paid Dreamstyle for work that was not finished, contact your state’s contractor licensing board or attorney general’s office to confirm whether such a fund exists in your state and what its filing requirements are.

Immediate Steps for Affected Customers

Former Dreamstyle employees publicly advised customers to place stop-payment orders on any uncashed checks written to the company.1ABC 10News San Diego. Save your contract, change orders, canceled checks, card statements, permits, and any photographs of the work in progress; you will need this documentation for a recovery fund claim, a chargeback dispute, or a proof of claim in the bankruptcy.

How Dreamstyle Reached This Point

Dreamstyle was founded in Albuquerque in 1989 by Larry Chavez. In late 2021, Chavez sold the company to Audax Private Equity, which combined Dreamstyle with Alure Home Improvements of New York and Remodel USA of Maryland to form a national platform called Renovo Home Partners.5PrivSource. Audax Private Equity Forms Renovo Home Partners Chavez remained CEO through 2022 and was replaced in early 2023, with further leadership turnover after that.

The rollup struggled to integrate its acquisitions, and the residential remodeling market softened as inflation caused homeowners to defer projects. In 2024, Audax exited the investment and BlackRock TCP Capital Corp. became the primary financial stakeholder. By the fourth quarter of 2024, BlackRock had placed Renovo on non-accrual status, meaning the lender no longer expected timely interest payments.6Investing.com. The Renewal by Andersen Arbitration

Before the private-equity sale, Dreamstyle had been a licensed retailer for Renewal by Andersen, the window and door subsidiary of Andersen Corporation, across five territories: New Mexico, San Diego, Boise, and two areas of Arizona. In May 2019, Renewal terminated all five retailer agreements after Dreamstyle acquired Phoenix-based Legacy Remodeling and began selling Renewal products through it. Dreamstyle sued in November 2019, alleging wrongful termination, breach of contract, fraud, and antitrust violations, and sought $240 million in damages.7KRQE. The dispute went to arbitration under the retailer agreements’ arbitration clauses. An American Arbitration Association panel heard the case in November 2021 and issued a final award on February 21, 2022, granting Dreamstyle roughly $7.2 million in damages and interest on the breach of contract and wrongful termination claims for the New Mexico, San Diego, and Boise territories. The panel found the two Arizona terminations were justified because the Legacy acquisition breached those agreements.8Qualified Remodeler. Other Pending Litigation

In August 2025, weeks before the shutdown, former employee Dave Knight filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against Dreamstyle Remodeling of California in Los Angeles County Superior Court (Case No. 25STCV24635). The complaint asserts eight causes of action, including discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and failure to prevent discrimination under California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act, along with whistleblower retaliation under the California Labor Code.11Trellis Law. Will Dreamstyle Come Back?

Founder Larry Chavez told the Albuquerque Journal in October 2025 that he intended to “buy it back one way or another” and restart operations beginning in New Mexico.2Albuquerque Journal. Albuquerque’s Dreamstyle Remodeling Shuts Down; Founder Vows to Buy It Back As of mid-2026, the bankruptcy cases remain active and no public reports have confirmed a buyback. A future purchase of the name or assets would not, on its own, revive obligations under old customer contracts; that is what the recovery fund process is for.
