DoorDash Driver Tax Forms: 1099-NEC, Schedule C, and SE Tax

DoorDash driver taxes work differently from a regular paycheck job. Because you’re an independent contractor, DoorDash withholds nothing from your earnings, so you’re responsible for reporting the income, claiming your deductions, and paying both income tax and self-employment tax yourself. The three forms that carry most of the work are the 1099-NEC you receive from DoorDash, Schedule C where you calculate your profit, and Schedule SE where you figure the self-employment tax.

The 1099-NEC and the $600 Myth

If DoorDash paid you $600 or more during the year, it must send you a Form 1099-NEC. Box 1 reports your total nonemployee compensation, including base pay, in-app tips, and any bonuses or incentive payments.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC (04/2025)

Starting with the 2024 tax year, DoorDash delivers 1099s inside the Dasher app rather than through a separate portal. Check the earnings or tax information section early in the year, and if you opted out of electronic delivery, watch for the paper copy in the mail. Compare the form against your own bank deposits and records. If the numbers don’t match, contact DoorDash support to request a corrected form before you file.

Here’s the trap: if you earned less than $600, DoorDash won’t send a 1099-NEC, but you still owe taxes on that income. The $600 threshold is a reporting rule for DoorDash, not a tax-free allowance for you. Every dollar of self-employment income goes on your return whether or not a form arrives.

One boundary worth noting. You may have heard about a lower 1099-K reporting threshold for payment platforms. That plan was reversed, and the threshold reverted to $20,000 in gross payments and 200 transactions.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Issues FAQs on Form 1099-K Threshold Under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Most drivers won’t see a 1099-K, so the 1099-NEC is the form to look for.

Deductions That Lower What You Owe

Your taxable income isn’t everything DoorDash paid you. It’s what’s left after you subtract legitimate business expenses, and the IRS requires you to substantiate those expenses with adequate records.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 510, Business Use of Car Track costs through the year rather than reconstructing them in April.

Mileage

Vehicle costs are usually the largest deduction for a delivery driver, and you choose between two methods. The standard mileage rate is a single per-mile figure that folds in gas, depreciation, and wear and tear. For 2026, that rate is 72.5 cents per mile, up from 70 cents in 2025.4Internal Revenue Service. IRS Sets 2026 Business Standard Mileage Rate at 72.5 Cents Per Mile, Up 2.5 Cents The alternative is actual expenses, meaning gas, insurance, maintenance, and depreciation added up separately. Most drivers do better with the standard rate; actual expenses make sense if your vehicle has unusually high operating costs.

Track every business mile. That includes the drive to a pickup location before an order is active and the drive home after your last delivery. A mileage tracking app running in the background is the easiest way to build a log the IRS will accept. If you use the same car for personal driving, only the business portion is deductible.

Phone, Supplies, Tolls

Other common deductions include the business-use percentage of your monthly phone bill, since the phone runs navigation and order management; delivery supplies like insulated bags, phone mounts, and chargers; and parking fees and tolls paid during active deliveries. Each expense must be ordinary and necessary for your delivery work. Keep receipts or digital records. For mixed-use costs like your phone bill, estimate the business percentage honestly.

Putting It Together on Schedule C

Schedule C is where your income and expenses meet. Report your gross income (the 1099-NEC amount plus any earnings under $600 that weren’t reported to you) and then subtract deductible expenses line by line.5Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule C (Form 1040), Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship) The form has specific lines for vehicle expenses, supplies, and other categories. What’s left is your net profit, and that number drives both your income tax and your self-employment tax.

If you use the standard mileage rate, fill out Part IV of Schedule C with total miles, business miles, and the date you started using the vehicle for deliveries. Run the numbers under both methods once a year to see which gives you the larger deduction.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 510, Business Use of Car

Self-Employment Tax on Schedule SE

Employees split Social Security and Medicare taxes with their employer. As an independent contractor, you pay both halves. That’s the self-employment tax: 12.4% for Social Security plus 2.9% for Medicare, or 15.3% of your net earnings.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1401 – Rate of Tax You calculate it on Schedule SE, and the result flows onto Form 1040.

Self-employment tax only kicks in if your net earnings reach $400 or more for the year.7Social Security Administration. If You Are Self-Employed Below that, you still report the income but skip Schedule SE. If your combined self-employment income exceeds $200,000 (or $250,000 if married filing jointly), an additional 0.9% Medicare tax applies on earnings above the threshold.8Internal Revenue Service. You can deduct half of your self-employment tax when calculating your adjusted gross income. This deduction sits on Schedule 1 of Form 1040 and reduces the income subject to regular income tax.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes It doesn’t reduce the self-employment tax itself, but it lowers your overall bill.10Internal Revenue Service. The Qualified Business Income Deduction

On top of your Schedule C deductions and the half-SE-tax write-off, you may qualify for the qualified business income deduction under Section 199A. This lets you exclude up to 20% of your net business income from federal income tax, capped at 20% of your total taxable income before the QBI deduction and minus net capital gains.11Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8995

Delivery driving is not a “specified service trade or business,” so the phase-out rules that restrict lawyers and consultants don’t hit drivers the same way. Most drivers with taxable income under roughly $203,000 (single) or $406,000 (married filing jointly) can take the full 20% deduction. Claim it on Form 8995 or Form 8995-A. It reduces income tax only, not self-employment tax.

Estimated Quarterly Payments

Because DoorDash withholds nothing, the IRS expects you to pay through the year rather than settling once in April. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax when you file, you’re generally required to make estimated quarterly payments.12Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes

The 2026 quarterly deadlines are:

  • April 15, 2026, covering January through March
  • June 15, 2026, covering April and May
  • September 15, 2026, covering June through August
  • January 15, 2027, covering September through December

Miss these and you’ll face an underpayment penalty on top of the taxes owed. You avoid the penalty by paying at least 90% of your current year’s tax liability, or 100% of last year’s tax (110% if your adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000).13Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty Paying 100% of last year’s bill in four equal installments is the simplest safe harbor because it doesn’t require you to predict this year’s income.

If you also hold a W-2 job, you can raise the withholding at that job to cover your DoorDash liability. The IRS doesn’t care where the money comes from, only that enough was paid through the year.

Filing, Extensions, and Records

The federal filing deadline is April 15. Electronic filing gives you immediate confirmation and typically processes refunds in about three weeks; paper returns take six weeks or longer.14Internal Revenue Service. Refunds If you mail a paper return, use the service center designated for your state and send it certified for proof of timely filing.

Need more time? File Form 4868 by April 15 for an automatic six-month extension to October 15.15Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return An extension to file is not an extension to pay. Estimate what you owe and send payment by April 15 to avoid interest and late-payment penalties.

After filing, keep copies of your return and every supporting record (mileage logs, receipts, 1099 forms, bank statements) for at least three years. If you underreport income by more than 25% of your gross income, the IRS has six years to assess additional tax, so holding records longer is cheap insurance.16Internal Revenue Service.
