The rivalry between Trump and Obama began in 2011 with Donald Trump publicly questioning whether Barack Obama had been born in the United States, and it has run for fifteen years through presidential campaigns, sweeping policy reversals, a war with Iran, and, by 2026, Trump accusing Obama of treason while Obama warned publicly about authoritarianism. It has never been a rivalry between equals. Trump has spent much of his political life defining himself against Obama; Obama has mostly stayed quiet, speaking up when he believes democratic norms are at risk.
How It Started: The Birther Years
Trump’s entry into national politics was built on a false claim about Obama. In March 2011, he began saying he had “real doubts” about whether Obama held a valid U.S. birth certificate and claimed to have sent private investigators to Hawaii.1BBC News. Trump’s Birther Claims The conspiracy theory that Obama had been born in Kenya and was constitutionally ineligible for the presidency had drifted around the political fringe for years. Trump gave it a mainstream stage.
On April 27, 2011, the White House released Obama’s original long-form birth certificate. Trump took credit for forcing the issue, calling it a “great service.”1BBC News. Trump’s Birther Claims He did not stop there. In 2012 he tweeted that an “extremely credible source” had told him the certificate was a fraud. In 2013 he raised suspicions about the death of a Hawaiian health official who had verified the document. In 2014 he urged hackers to access Obama’s college records. As late as January 2016, asked by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer whether Obama was born in Hawaii, Trump responded: “Who knows? Who knows? Who cares right now?”2PBS NewsHour. Trump Ends One Obama Birther Rumor, Starting Another
Only on September 16, 2016, deep into his first presidential campaign, did Trump say the words: “President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period.” He never apologized. He immediately tried to shift blame onto Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign, a claim fact-checkers found no evidence to support.2PBS NewsHour. Trump Ends One Obama Birther Rumor, Starting Another
Michelle Obama later wrote in her memoir that the movement was “crazy and mean-spirited,” rooted in “underlying bigotry and xenophobia,” and that she would “never forgive” Trump for stirring up conspiracy theories she believed risked violence against her family.3Politico. Michelle Obama on Trump Birther Claims NBC News described Trump as the “chief propagator” of the birther claim, which played a significant role in his rise on the political right.4NBC News. The Correspondents’ Dinner
Three days after the birth certificate was released, the two men were in the same room. At the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 30, 2011, Obama roasted Trump from the podium while Trump sat in the audience. Now that the birth certificate question was settled, Obama joked, Trump could turn to the questions that really mattered: “whether we faked the Moon landing,” “what really happened in Roswell,” and “where are Biggie and Tupac.” He displayed a mock-up of the White House rebranded with a Trump casino sign and needled Trump for a Celebrity Apprentice decision to fire Gary Busey over Lil Jon, which “would keep me up at night.”5GovInfo. White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner Remarks
People close to Trump have pointed to that evening as a hinge. Political adviser Roger Stone called it “the night he resolves to run for president.” Author Michael D’Antonio argued that being mocked by the first Black president created “a burning, personal need” in Trump for redemption.6PBS Frontline. Inside the Night President Obama Took on Donald Trump Four years later, Trump announced his candidacy. He won.
Undoing the Obama Legacy
Once in office, Trump pursued what scholars have called a “politics of rollback,” a systematic effort to reverse Obama’s signature achievements.7Oxford University Press. Obama v. Trump: The Politics of Rollback On day one he withdrew the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Within his first year he pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord, reversed Obama’s diplomatic opening with Cuba, and directed the Pentagon to reinstate a ban on transgender military service, which federal courts blocked.8ABC News. Obama Undone Three fights defined the effort.
The Affordable Care Act
Repealing “Obamacare” was a central Trump promise. Congress failed to pass full repeal in 2017 despite Republican majorities, but the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminated the individual mandate, and Trump used executive power to end cost-sharing reduction payments to insurers and to authorize plans that skirted ACA protections.8ABC News. Obama Undone The fight returned in Trump’s second term, with Republicans renewing calls to gut the ACA during budget negotiations that produced the longest federal government shutdown in history.9STAT News. The Iran Nuclear Deal
On May 8, 2018, Trump withdrew the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the 2015 agreement Obama and international partners had negotiated to constrain Iran’s nuclear program. Trump called it “one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into.”10Trump White House Archives. President Trump Ending United States Participation in the Iran Deal After the withdrawal, Iran breached the deal’s limits and expanded uranium enrichment. By June 2025, Iran held nearly 21,800 pounds of enriched uranium, with more than 970 pounds enriched to 60 percent, a level approaching weapons-grade.11CNBC. Trump Iran JCPOA Nuclear Deal
DACA
Obama created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals by executive action on June 15, 2012, shielding roughly 800,000 people who had been brought to the country as children from deportation. On September 5, 2017, Trump announced its rescission. The Supreme Court blocked that move in 2020 in DHS v. Regents of the University of California, finding the rescission “arbitrary and capricious.” Later federal courts have ruled the program itself unlawful under the Administrative Procedure Act. As of a January 2025 Fifth Circuit decision, renewals remain available for existing recipients while the case continues in district court.12National Immigration Law Center. The Wiretapping Accusation
Early on March 4, 2017, Trump posted a series of tweets accusing Obama of ordering the wiretapping of Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign and comparing it to “Nixon/Watergate.”13Time. DOJ Files Confirm No Wiretap Records Obama’s spokesperson called the claim “simply false.” Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said, “Absolutely, I can deny it.”14The Guardian. FBI Director Challenges Trump Over Obama Wiretap Claims On March 20, 2017, FBI Director James Comey and NSA Director Adm. Mike Rogers testified under oath that no evidence supported the allegation.15Vox. Trump’s Wiretap Claims Officially Debunked The Republican leaders of both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees reached the same conclusion. In September 2017, the Department of Justice confirmed in a court filing that both the FBI and the National Security Division had “no records related to wiretaps as described by the March 4, 2017 tweets.”
Second Term: Treason Claims and a War With Iran
The attacks escalated sharply after Trump returned to office. On July 22, 2025, Trump publicly accused Obama of “treason” and of leading a “coup” to undermine the 2016 election. “After what they did to me, and whether it’s right or wrong, it’s time to go after people,” he told reporters. “Obama’s been caught directly. … What they did in 2016 and 2020 is very criminal.” At a separate event, he called Obama and others “vicious, horrible people.”16NBC News. Obama Pushes Back on Trump’s Treason Claim
The allegations rested on documents released on July 18, 2025, by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who claimed Obama-era officials had “manufactured and politicized intelligence” to create a “treasonous conspiracy.” Gabbard filed a criminal referral with the Department of Justice naming Obama directly.17Office of the Director of National Intelligence. ODNI Press Release 15-2518BBC News. Obama Prosecution Calls FactCheck.org found that Gabbard had conflated two distinct intelligence questions: whether Russia altered voting infrastructure, which agencies consistently said did not happen, and whether Russia sought to influence the electorate through social media and hacked emails, which was the focus of the January 2017 assessment. That assessment had been corroborated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s 2019 report and a bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report whose Republican members, including then-Senator Marco Rubio, called the evidence of Russian meddling “irrefutable.”19FactCheck.org. Gabbard’s Misleading Coup Claim Legal experts noted that Obama enjoys immunity for official acts, citing the Supreme Court’s July 2024 ruling affirming “absolute immunity” for presidents carrying out official duties.20Al Jazeera. Can Barack Obama Be Prosecuted Obama’s office called the allegations “ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.”21The Guardian. Obama Breaks Silence on Trump Attorney General Pam Bondi nonetheless formed a Department of Justice “strike force” to assess the claims.
The Iran nuclear deal, meanwhile, stopped being a policy disagreement and became a shooting war. In February 2026, the United States went to war with Iran. The 15-week conflict cost “billions and billions of dollars,” strained the military, drew down U.S. strategic oil reserves, and largely halted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire came in June 2026, with Trump signing a memorandum of understanding at the Palace of Versailles on June 17. In an interview aired two days later, Obama tied the war directly to Trump’s 2018 withdrawal from the JCPOA. “We’ve now fought a war, spent billions and billions of dollars, you know, put enormous strain on our military,” he said. “A lot of people have died. And it feels like we’re back where we were before we started the war, except maybe a little bit worse off.”22The Guardian. Obama Says US Is Worse Off After War With Iran
Obama’s Public Pushback
Obama largely observed the norm of former presidents staying quiet during Trump’s first term. That has changed. On April 3, 2025, at Hamilton College in New York, he told an audience: “I don’t think what we just witnessed in terms of economic policy and tariffs is going to be good for America.” He singled out the administration’s pressure campaign against universities, noting the White House had revoked $400 million in grants from Columbia and suspended $175 million from the University of Pennsylvania, and urged schools to resist: “If not, and you’re just being intimidated, well, you should be able to say, that’s why we got this big endowment.”23The New York Times. Obama Trump College Speech He also condemned pressure on law firms: “I am more troubled by the idea that a White House can say to law firms, ‘If you represent parties that we don’t like, we’re going to pull all our business or bar you from representing people effectively.’ That kind of behavior is contrary to the basic compact we have as Americans.”24ABC News. Obama and Harris Criticize Trump White House
In September 2025, at an Obama Foundation gathering in London with democracy activists from Eastern Europe, he warned he was “increasingly concerned about the rising wave of authoritarianism sweeping the globe” and cited politicians targeting civil society, undermining press freedom, and weaponizing the justice system. Authoritarian leaders, he said, “can tear things down, remove constraints on their actions, and empower themselves in a small group,” but cannot solve real problems like health care or education because “that does require creating new structures.” He did not name Trump.25CNN. The Presidential Center Snub
The opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on June 18, 2026, crystallized where things stood. The $850 million facility on the South Side drew former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Joe Biden, along with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, and John Legend.26CNN. Obama Presidential Center Grand Opening Trump was the only living former president absent. He had not been invited. Former Obama chief of staff Bill Daley explained: “It’s unfortunate that Trump has been the way he’s been to justify — not my opinion — not inviting him to this. I mean, the insults, which have continued. … He’s operated totally outside the way previous presidents have.”27Politico. Obama Presidential Center Opens
Neither Obama named Trump from the stage. Obama declared that the country’s founders established that “there will be no kings or lords” and stressed allegiance not “to any presidents or political parties but to the people and our constitution.” Michelle Obama criticized those who had spread “the lies about your birthright, your patriotism.”27Politico. Obama Presidential Center Opens In the weeks before the opening, Trump shared multiple AI-generated images on Truth Social depicting the center as a trash container ringed by homeless encampments, captioning one: “The Barack Hussein Obama Library, in 10 years, when fully matured!”28HuffPost. Trump Mocks Obama Library With AI Image He had previously called the center a “garbage dump.”
Days later, on the All the Smoke podcast, Obama addressed Trump’s focus on him directly. “I obviously have a room in his head,” he said, “a suite in his head.” He contrasted it with his own experience in office, when he said the demands of the job left no space to dwell on predecessors. “The idea that I’d be worrying about somebody who came before and me trying to measure like, ‘What’s he done today?’ constantly worrying about that is a strange thing to me,” Obama said. “It shows me somebody who’s not focused on the American people and the job they’re supposed to do.”29Yahoo News. Where Each Man Stands With the Public
Obama consistently outperforms Trump in public opinion. A CNN poll conducted in May 2026 found Obama with a 57 percent favorability rating, against 34 percent for Trump. Asked to name the most admired president, 30 percent chose Obama and 19 percent chose Trump. Obama’s favorability among independents was more than twice Trump’s. Nineteen percent of Republicans said they had a favorable view of Obama; just 5 percent of Democrats said the same of Trump.30The Hill. Favorable View: Obama vs. Trump As of late June 2026, Trump’s job approval sat at roughly 38 percent with 58 percent disapproving, a net approval of negative 20. At the same point in Obama’s first term, his net approval was roughly even.31The New York Times. Trump Approval Rating Polls
