Zurich Shield does not cover scratches. The product is a paint sealant sold through dealerships with a warranty that pays only for damage caused by environmental hazards like bird droppings, tree sap, acid rain, and UV fading. Scratches, chips, scuffs, and dents are physical damage, and physical damage is excluded on every tier of the plan.
What the Warranty Actually Pays For
Zurich Shield is a sealant applied at the dealership and backed by a product warranty administered by Automotive Protection Systems, Inc. The sealant sits on top of the paint, repels water and dirt, and breaks down over time. It is not a ceramic coating and not a paint protection film.
The exterior warranty covers a defined list of environmental damage: weather-induced fading and loss of gloss, hard water etching, industrial fallout, bird waste, acid rain, tree sap, oxidation, insects, road salt and de-icing agents, sand abrasion, and accidental paint overspray.1Valley Honda. Zurich Paint Protection Brochure The official site summarizes the paint warranty as covering “fading, oxidation, and loss of gloss.”2Zurich Shield. Zurich Shield FAQ If the sealant fails to protect against one of those listed hazards, Automotive Protection Systems will “remedy the damaged portion of the treated surface.”3Zurich Shield. Scratches do not appear anywhere on that list, and the omission is not an oversight.
Why Scratches Are Excluded
A scratch is mechanical damage from contact with another object. The Zurich contract language used in its vehicle service agreements categorically excludes “physical damage.”4Zurich Protection Plan Details. Vehicle Service Contract The sealant is designed to resist chemical and environmental degradation, not impacts from keys, rocks, shopping carts, or branches.
The company applies this exclusion directly in claim decisions. In a Better Business Bureau complaint resolved in August 2025, Zurich Shield told a customer: “Unfortunately, paint chips, scratches and scuffs are not covered.” A separate complaint about “surface rust from paint being chipped off” was denied with the response that “missing paint is not covered under the product warranty.”5Better Business Bureau. Zurich Shield BBB Complaints Rock chips have been denied as a “listed exclusion under this warranty.”6Better Business Bureau. Zurich Shield BBB Complaints
If an object hit your paint and left a mark, the claim will be denied.
Do the Higher Tiers Cover Scratches?
Zurich Shield is sold in tiers, including base, Premier, Premier Plus, and elitePlus. None add scratch coverage to the paint warranty.
The elitePlus tier upgrades the formula to a nano ceramic coating with a quartz-based structure, but the covered damages are the same environmental list: fading, loss of gloss, hard water etching, industrial fallout, bird waste, acid rain, tree sap, oxidation, insects, road salt, de-icing agents, sand abrasion, and accidental paint overspray.7Lewis Chevrolet. Premier Plus is the one tier with any physical damage benefits, and they are narrow. It covers alloy wheels for minor surface abrasions and brake dust staining, and it covers removal of minor dents using paintless methods as part of surface preparation before the sealant is reapplied.8Browns Jeep Chrysler Dodge. Zurich Shield Premier Plus That is a reapplication benefit tied to the coating service, not a general scratch repair for the paint.
What Actually Protects Paint From Scratches
Dealers sometimes present Zurich Shield alongside paint protection film or ceramic coatings, and the three get confused. For scratch resistance, the differences are the point.
Paint protection film is a clear physical layer applied over the paint. It absorbs impacts from rocks and keys, and higher-end films can self-heal minor scratches with heat. Ceramic coatings bond chemically to the paint to form a hard, semi-permanent layer that resists minor scratches and chemical stains better than a sealant.3Zurich Shield. Zurich Shield Both last for years.
Zurich Shield sits on top of the paint without bonding to it and breaks down, requiring reapplication every three years to keep the warranty active. Applying Zurich Shield does not prevent a later installation of PPF or a professional ceramic coating, though removing the existing sealant first can add cost.9Genesis Owners Forum. Hypothesis on Zurich Shield If scratch protection is what you wanted when the dealer sold you the plan, PPF or a professional ceramic coating is the product that delivers it.
Coverage terms and exclusions vary by state, so the specific contract you signed is the final word on what Zurich Shield will and will not pay for in your case.2Zurich Shield. Zurich Shield FAQ On scratches, though, the answer across every public document and claim response is the same one.
