Yes, VXUS does pay dividends. The Vanguard Total International Stock ETF distributes income from its roughly 8,700 foreign holdings four times a year, with a current yield near 2.43%. The per-share amount changes every quarter because it depends on what foreign companies pay and how those payments translate into U.S. dollars. International dividends also carry a wrinkle domestic funds don’t have: foreign governments withhold tax before the money reaches you, and you may be able to recover most of it through the Foreign Tax Credit.
When VXUS Pays
Distributions land in March, June, September, and December. To receive a given payment, you have to own shares before the ex-dividend date; buy on or after that date and the seller keeps the dividend.1Investor.gov. Ex-Dividend Dates: When Are You Entitled to Stock and Cash Dividends Cash actually shows up in your brokerage account on the payable date, usually a few business days after the record date.
The 2025 payable dates were March 25, June 24, September 23, and December 23.2Vanguard Advisors. VXUS – Vanguard Total International Stock ETF The first 2026 distribution paid on March 24, 2026, at $0.19 per share. Vanguard’s fund page lists upcoming dates, and most brokerages publish a dividend calendar for individual holdings.
How Much VXUS Pays
VXUS does not pay a fixed amount. In 2025, total distributions came to roughly $2.40 per share, up from about $1.98 per share in 2024.2Vanguard Advisors. VXUS – Vanguard Total International Stock ETF The income return by NAV was 2.55% in 2022, 3.80% in 2023, 3.42% in 2024, and 4.33% in 2025.3Vanguard. The December payment is almost always the biggest. In December 2025, VXUS distributed $1.36 per share, more than three times the $0.19 paid the previous March.2Vanguard Advisors. VXUS – Vanguard Total International Stock ETF Many international companies, particularly European ones, pay their annual or semi-annual dividends in spring and summer, and those flow through to shareholders in the year-end distribution.
Why the Payment Amount Moves Around
Each of the 8,700 companies in the fund sets its own dividend based on local earnings and tax rules. When those companies pay in euros, yen, or another currency, VXUS converts the income to dollars. A stronger dollar shrinks foreign payments; a weaker dollar boosts them.
Fund expenses come out before the money reaches you, but the drag is small. The expense ratio is 0.05% a year, or about $5 annually per $10,000 invested.3Vanguard. Vanguard Total International Stock ETF (VXUS) Profile VXUS has historically not made capital gains distributions, so what you receive is dividend income alone.
How the Dividends Are Taxed
For U.S. tax purposes, VXUS dividends split into qualified and ordinary (nonqualified) categories.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 404, Dividends and Other Corporate Distributions Qualified dividends are taxed at long-term capital gains rates of 0%, 15%, or 20%, depending on your taxable income. To qualify, you have to hold the shares more than 60 days during the 121-day period beginning 60 days before the ex-dividend date.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1 – Tax Imposed Dividends that fail that holding test, or that come from companies in countries without a qualifying U.S. tax treaty, are taxed as ordinary income at rates up to 37%.
Not everything VXUS pays qualifies. For 2025, Vanguard reported that about 58.5% of the fund’s distributions counted as qualified dividend income, leaving 41.5% taxed as ordinary income.6Vanguard. Qualified Dividend Income – Year-End Figures The split changes yearly with the country mix behind the income.
Higher earners owe an additional 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax on dividends when modified adjusted gross income tops $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).7Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 559, Net Investment Income Tax Those thresholds are not indexed for inflation. The surtax stacks on top of whichever dividend rate applies.
The Foreign Tax Credit
Because VXUS holds foreign stocks, other countries withhold tax on the dividends before the fund receives them. Treaty rates vary, but withholding commonly runs 10% to 30% depending on the country.8Internal Revenue Service. Tax Treaty Tables Without relief you would be taxed twice on the same income: once abroad, once by the IRS.
The Foreign Tax Credit closes that gap by letting you subtract the foreign tax you already paid directly from your U.S. tax bill, dollar for dollar. To claim it, you generally file Form 1116 with your return.9Internal Revenue Service. Foreign Tax Credit Your brokerage reports the foreign tax the fund passed through to you in Box 7 of Form 1099-DIV.10Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-DIV
If your total creditable foreign taxes across all investments are no more than $300 ($600 for married filing jointly), you can skip Form 1116 and take the credit directly on Schedule 3 of Form 1040.11Internal Revenue Service. Foreign Tax Credit Workout The shortcut has conditions: all the foreign income has to be passive (like dividends and interest), and it has to be reported on a 1099 or Schedule K-1. For larger amounts, Form 1116 caps the credit at the share of your U.S. tax that relates to foreign-source income, so it cannot offset tax on your domestic income.12Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Form 1116 Foreign Tax Credit Unused credit carries back one year or forward up to ten.
What Changes Inside an IRA or 401(k)
Holding VXUS in a traditional IRA, Roth IRA, or 401(k) removes the yearly tax on the dividends. It also removes the Foreign Tax Credit, which is only available when you are subject to U.S. tax on the same income.9Internal Revenue Service. Foreign Tax Credit Foreign governments still withhold on the dividends, but there is no U.S. return line to recover it on.
That creates a trade-off specific to international funds. In a taxable account, you owe U.S. tax on the dividends each year but can recoup most of the foreign withholding. In a Roth IRA, the income grows tax-free, but the foreign withholding is a permanent drag with no offset. Some investors respond by holding domestic funds in Roth accounts and keeping VXUS in taxable ones.
Reinvestment and a Wash Sale Trap
Most brokerages let you choose whether VXUS dividends arrive as cash or are automatically reinvested. A cash distribution lands in your settlement balance to withdraw or redeploy however you like. A dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP) uses the payment to buy more VXUS shares, including fractional shares, usually with no commission. You set the preference once and it applies to future distributions.
There is one tax trap worth knowing. If you sell VXUS shares at a loss to harvest a tax deduction, a reinvested dividend can undo part of it. The wash sale rule disallows a loss when you acquire a substantially identical security within 30 days before or after the sale.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1091 – Loss From Wash Sales of Stock or Securities A DRIP purchase inside that 61-day window counts as an acquisition and disallows part or all of the loss.
The disallowed amount is added to the cost basis of the new shares, so it comes back to you when you eventually sell them. If you plan to harvest losses from VXUS, consider switching to cash distributions or turning DRIP off before the sale.
