Yes, the Capital One Venture X does cover travel insurance, and the benefits come built into the card’s $395 annual fee rather than as a separate purchase. The package includes trip cancellation and interruption, trip delay reimbursement, lost or damaged baggage coverage, primary rental car collision protection, and travel accident insurance. It is a solid set of protections for a premium travel card, but it has one meaningful hole: there is no emergency medical or medical evacuation coverage, so travelers heading abroad often need a separate policy to fill that gap.¹

Trip Cancellation and Interruption

If you cancel or cut short a trip for a covered reason, the card reimburses up to $2,000 per person for nonrefundable common carrier tickets — airline, bus, train, or ferry.⁴

The list of covered reasons is narrow. Only two scenarios qualify: a death, accidental injury, disease, or physical illness (verified by a physician) affecting the cardholder or an immediate family member, or the common carrier defaulting due to financial insolvency.⁴ Everything else falls outside the policy. Weather cancellations, work conflicts, fear of travel, and simple changes of plan are not reimbursed. Prepaid hotels and tour packages are also excluded; only common carrier fares qualify.

The Visa Infinite benefit guide adds further exclusions, including pre-existing conditions (defined as injuries or illnesses that occurred or manifested within 60 days before the ticket purchase), professional sports or racing, traveling against a physician’s advice, third-trimester pregnancy, and being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.⁵ Cardholder reports indicate the $2,000 cap is strictly enforced with no appeals process, so travelers with expensive itineraries may want supplemental coverage.⁴

Trip Delay Reimbursement

A delay of more than six hours, or one that forces an unexpected overnight stay, triggers up to $500 per eligible passenger for reasonable expenses like hotel rooms, meals, and toiletries. The trip has to be outside your home city and the fare has to be on the card. Covered reasons include weather, strikes, equipment failure, and emergency situations.⁴⁶

One trap worth knowing before you file: at least one cardholder has reported a claim denial for an “operational” delay, with the administrator stating that only equipment failure, inclement weather, strikes, and hijacking qualify as covered hazards.⁷ If the airline’s reason code is vague, push for documentation that names a specific covered cause. Claims must be filed within 30 days through eclaimsline.com or by calling 800-825-4062, with your itinerary, a card statement, a carrier statement explaining the delay, and itemized receipts for any expense over $50.⁶

Lost or Damaged Baggage

The card provides up to $3,000 per passenger to cover the difference between what the airline pays and the actual value of lost, damaged, or stolen bags and contents. New York residents are capped at $2,000. Both carry-on and checked luggage are covered, as long as at least part of the trip was paid with the Venture X.⁴

This is secondary coverage, so it only kicks in after the airline’s own compensation. Cash, event tickets, contact lenses, eyeglasses, and hearing aids are excluded. File within 20 days and keep the airline’s Property Irregularity Report, proof of card booking, receipts for lost items, and documentation of any airline settlement.⁶⁴ If bags are delayed rather than lost, the trip delay benefit can cover essentials while you wait.

Rental Car Collision Coverage

Rental car insurance is one of the strongest benefits on the Venture X because it is primary. You can file directly through the card’s benefit without going through your personal auto insurer first. The policy covers damage from collisions and theft up to the actual cash value of the vehicle, for cars with an original MSRP of up to $75,000.⁸

To activate coverage, charge the entire rental to the card and decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver. Rentals are capped at 15 consecutive days domestically and 31 days internationally.⁸

Several vehicle types are excluded: trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, limousines, recreational vehicles, cargo vans, vehicles with open cargo beds, exotic cars, and antique cars (over 20 years old or out of production for 10 or more years). Vans designed for small-group transport seating up to nine people are covered.⁵⁸⁶

Travel Accident Insurance

The card provides up to $1,000,000 for accidental loss of life, limb, sight, speech, or hearing sustained while traveling on a common carrier. Coverage is described as door-to-door, applying from the time you leave home until you reach your destination, as long as you are traveling by taxi, bus, ferry, train, plane, or other public transportation with the fare charged to the card.⁴¹

Read the name carefully. This covers catastrophic injuries and death on a common carrier, not everyday medical emergencies during a trip.

The Big Gap: No Medical or Evacuation Coverage

The most significant hole in the Venture X insurance package is the complete absence of emergency medical and medical evacuation coverage. If you get sick or injured while traveling, especially abroad, the card provides no reimbursement for hospital visits, doctor fees, prescriptions, or emergency transport to a medical facility.¹⁹

The card does offer a 24-hour travel assistance hotline (800-825-4062 in the U.S. or +1-804-281-5571 internationally) that can arrange physician referrals and help coordinate logistics, but it does not pay for any medical services or transport.⁹ For comparison, the Chase Sapphire Reserve includes up to $100,000 in emergency medical and evacuation coverage.¹⁰ If you travel internationally, a standalone travel medical policy is worth considering.

A few other limits to keep in mind. Trip cancellation covers common carrier fares only, not hotels or tour packages. COVID-related cancellations based on fear of travel are excluded. There is no “cancel for any reason” protection.¹¹

Who Is Covered Besides You

Most Venture X travel benefits extend beyond the primary cardholder. The Visa Infinite benefit guide defines the “Insured Person” as the account holder, authorized users registered on the account, and the insured person’s spouse, domestic partner, and dependent children.⁵ Authorized users do receive travel insurance benefits when trips are booked with the card.¹²

Rules vary slightly by benefit. Trip delay coverage requires that the spouse and children under 22 be traveling with the cardholder. For trip cancellation, dependent children are those primarily dependent on the cardholder for support who are under 19, or under 25 if a full-time student.⁶⁵

Two things cause the most automatic denials. Capital One requires proof that you first sought compensation from the travel provider before filing an insurance claim; skip that step and the claim stops cold. And if you booked through an online travel agency, be ready to provide an itemized invoice that separates the travel provider’s cost from any booking fees.⁶ Capital One itself does not have access to claim information, so questions about claim status have to go through the relevant administrator rather than through the card’s customer service line.¹¹
