Does Venmo Have Two-Factor Authentication? Codes, Recovery, and Locking

Yes, Venmo has two-factor authentication, and it is on by default for every account. Whenever you sign in from a device Venmo doesn’t recognize, the app texts a six-digit verification code to the U.S. phone number on your account, and you have to enter that code to finish logging in.1Venmo. I’m Having Trouble With a Verification Code When Signing In From a New Device There’s no setting to switch it on. What matters is keeping the phone number current, making sure the codes can reach you, and knowing what to do when they don’t.

How the Code-Based Sign-In Works

Enter your username and password on an unfamiliar device, and Venmo sends a six-digit code by text. Type it in and you’re through. You can then mark the device as “remembered,” and future logins on that device skip the code step. Clear your browser cookies or switch browsers and that memory resets, so the next login gets treated as new.2Venmo. Login Security

If someone else tries to sign in from a device you’ve never used, Venmo sends you a notification about the attempt.2Venmo. Login Security Treat that alert as a warning to secure the account right away.

What Your Account Needs for Codes to Reach You

A few things have to be in place for the text-message system to work:

  • A U.S. cell phone number that can receive text messages from short codes, and that isn’t already linked to another Venmo account.3Venmo. Requirements
  • Short code messaging enabled on your carrier. Venmo’s codes come from the five-digit short code 86753. If nothing is coming through, text “START” to 86753 and check with your carrier that short code messaging isn’t blocked.4Venmo. Phone and Email Verification
  • An updated app: version 7.38.2 or newer, on at least iOS 14 or Android API 26 (Oreo).3Venmo. Requirements

One boundary worth knowing: Venmo does not support third-party authenticator apps like Google Authenticator or Authy.2Venmo. Login Security SMS is the only channel, which is why keeping the registered phone number accurate matters so much.

Keeping Your Phone Number, Email, and Devices Current

Open the Venmo app, tap the “Me” tab, then tap the gear icon in the upper-right to reach Settings.5Venmo. General Account Settings From there you can update your phone number and email and manage which devices are remembered.

To change your phone number, open the phone field and follow the prompts. Venmo texts a temporary code to the new number, and entering it links that number to your account.4Venmo. Phone and Email Verification Email works the same way, with a confirmation link sent to your inbox. Update these fields the moment your contact information changes; if you’re locked out on a new device and the number on file is dead, recovery gets a lot harder.1Venmo. Look through your remembered devices from time to time. Remove any you don’t recognize, and remove old phones or tablets you no longer use, especially anything you’ve sold or given away. Once a device is removed, whoever tries to log in from it has to pass the full verification again.2Venmo. Login Security

Locking the App Itself With a Passcode or Biometrics

Verification codes protect the login. They don’t protect an app that’s already open on a phone someone else picks up. For that, Venmo offers a separate lock on the app. In Settings under Preferences, look for “Face ID & Passcode” on iOS or “Passcode & biometric unlock” on Android, turn it on, and set a passcode. If Face ID, Touch ID, or fingerprint unlock is set up in your phone’s system settings, you can use those to unlock Venmo too.6Venmo. Passcode and Touch ID Setup

Never Share the Code, Even With Someone Claiming to Be Venmo

A common scam works like this: a thief tries to log in with your credentials, which triggers a real code to your phone, and then contacts you pretending to be Venmo support to ask you to read the code back. Venmo will never ask for your six-digit code by phone, text, email, or chat.7Venmo. Updating Your Phone Number on Venmo The legitimate code text contains no clickable links, so any Venmo-branded message pushing you to click something should be treated as suspicious.8Venmo. If a code arrives that you didn’t request, don’t share it with anyone. Open the app, check your remembered devices, and remove anything unfamiliar.

If You’ve Lost Access to the Phone That Gets the Codes

Try signing in first from a device you’ve used before. A remembered device may let you in without a code at all.1Venmo. I’m Having Trouble With a Verification Code When Signing In From a New Device

If that isn’t possible, go to the login screen, enter your username, email, or old phone number with your password, and on the next screen look for “Other options to confirm your identity” or “I don’t have access to this phone.” Those paths walk you through alternate identity checks.1Venmo. I’m Having Trouble With a Verification Code When Signing In From a New Device

When those options don’t appear, you’ll need to contact Venmo support through the Contact Us page or by phone. Have your full name, the email and old phone number on your account, and partial bank or card details ready: for a linked bank account, the full routing number and last four digits of the account; for a linked card, the first six and last four digits. Don’t give any full card or account number to anyone, including support.1Venmo. I’m Having Trouble With a Verification Code When Signing In From a New Device If Venmo can’t verify you automatically, the app may ask for identity documents such as a U.S. passport, driver’s license, or government ID, plus a recent utility bill, bank statement, W-2, or lease dated within the past 12 months to confirm your address.9Venmo. Your Liability If Someone Gets In Anyway

Federal law caps how much you can lose from unauthorized transfers, and the cap depends on how fast you report. Under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and its implementing regulation:10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693 – Congressional Findings and Declaration of Purpose
