Yes. Venmo charges a 3% fee whenever you fund a personal payment with a credit card, and that fee falls on you as the sender.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees So the short answer to whether Venmo charges a fee for credit cards is that it does — 3% on top of whatever you send, with no way to waive it for peer-to-peer payments. Bank accounts, debit cards, and your existing Venmo balance are all free.
How the 3% Is Calculated
The surcharge is applied to the amount you send. Pay a friend $100 with a credit card and Venmo bills your card $103. Send $500 and you owe $515. The fee attaches every time a credit card funds a personal payment, regardless of the recipient or the reason for the payment.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees
Changing the label on the payment does not help. The charge follows the funding source, not the category of transaction. Venmo spells this out in its user agreement, in line with federal disclosure rules for electronic fund transfers.2eCFR. 12 CFR Part 1005 – Electronic Fund Transfers (Regulation E)
Your Card Issuer May Add a Cash Advance Fee
The 3% is often not the whole bill. Many credit card issuers treat Venmo peer-to-peer payments as cash advances rather than purchases, because the money moves as liquid funds instead of paying for goods.3Venmo. Cash Advance Fees When that happens, your bank tacks on its own cash advance fee — typically 3% to 5% of the amount, or a flat minimum around $10, whichever is greater.
Cash advances also carry a higher APR than purchases, and there is generally no grace period. Interest starts running the day the transaction posts rather than at the end of the billing cycle.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR Part 1026 (Regulation Z) – 1026.54 Limitations on the Imposition of Finance Charges Stack the Venmo 3% on top of a typical bank cash advance fee and the total cost can clear 8% of what you sent.
Most cards also do not pay rewards on cash advances. If your issuer codes a Venmo payment that way, you probably will not earn points or cash back on it. Your card’s specific cash advance fee and APR appear in the tabular disclosure — sometimes called the Schumer Box — in your cardholder agreement.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR Part 1026 (Regulation Z) – 1026.5 General Disclosure Requirements
The Venmo Credit Card
Venmo’s own Visa Credit Card is one exception on rewards. It earns 1% cash back on Venmo peer-to-peer payments, plus 3% on your top spending category and 2% on your second-highest each statement period.6Venmo. Venmo Credit Card Rewards Program The 3% sending fee still applies, so the 1% cash back offsets only part of it.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees
The Amex Send Workaround
American Express cardholders can sidestep both the 3% fee and the cash advance treatment. Using the Amex Send Account feature, you load money from your Amex card into a Send Account inside the Amex app, then choose that Send Account as your funding source in Venmo. Amex treats the load as a regular card charge rather than a cash advance, and neither Amex nor Venmo charges a fee to send money this way.7American Express. Send and Split
Free Ways to Send Money on Venmo
The cleanest way to avoid the 3% is to fund the payment from something else. Three options cost nothing:1Venmo. About Venmo Fees
- A linked bank account. Venmo pulls the funds through ACH. No fee, though processing can take slightly longer than a card-funded payment.
- A debit card. Any debit card linked to your account sends fee-free.
- Your Venmo balance. Money already sitting in your account from prior payments received can be used at no cost.
All three deliver the full amount to the recipient with nothing deducted on either end.
Buying From a Merchant Is Different
The 3% credit card fee does not apply to you when you use Venmo to check out with an authorized business — through a Venmo business profile, on a retailer’s website, or by scanning a QR code at a store. The merchant pays the processing costs on those transactions, not the buyer.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees
For sellers, the standard business rate is 1.9% plus $0.10 per transaction, and contactless payments through Tap to Pay run 2.29% plus $0.09.8Venmo. Business Profile Transaction Fees Those come out of what the merchant receives.
One caution if you are on the receiving end: routing commercial activity through a personal account can prompt restrictions. Venmo’s user agreement limits personal accounts to non-commercial use unless you are authorized or using a business profile.9Venmo. User Agreement If you sell goods or services with any regularity, a business profile puts you under the correct fee structure and keeps the account in good standing.
