Does Venmo Ask for Your SSN: When, Why, and How to Refuse

Yes, Venmo does ask for your SSN, but not right away. The prompt appears when you try to do something the app treats as higher-risk: sending $300 or more in a rolling seven-day week, moving $1,000 or more to your bank in that same window, opening a business or organization profile, or using features like cryptocurrency and the Venmo debit card.1Venmo. Social Security Number You can keep using Venmo without handing over your Social Security number, but your account stays capped at small transactions.

Why Venmo Asks in the First Place

Venmo is classified as a money services business regulated by the U.S. Treasury Department, which puts it under the same federal rules that apply to banks.1Venmo. Social Security Number Two federal laws drive the request. The Bank Secrecy Act, at 31 U.S.C. 5311, requires financial institutions to run anti-money-laundering programs that verify who is behind each account.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 31 USC 5311 – Declaration of Purpose And Section 6050W of the Internal Revenue Code requires payment settlement companies to collect a taxpayer identification number from anyone receiving reportable payments for goods and services.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6050W – Returns Relating to Payments Made in Settlement of Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions Your SSN satisfies both.

When the Request Appears

Venmo lists the specific actions that trigger identity verification:1Venmo. Social Security Number

  • Sending $300 or more within a rolling seven-day period.
  • Transferring $1,000 or more to a linked bank account within a rolling seven-day period.
  • Creating an organization account.
  • Running more than 200 transactions in a calendar year as a sole proprietor with a business profile.

Two features require verification before you can touch them at all. Buying, selling, or holding cryptocurrency on Venmo requires a verified identity, including an SSN or ITIN.4Venmo. What You Can Still Do Without Giving Your SSN

An unverified account is not useless. You can send money to other people and businesses, funded by a linked bank account, credit card, or debit card.6Venmo. Identity Verification Your total weekly spending is capped at $299.99, and that ceiling covers person-to-person payments and merchant purchases combined.7Venmo. Personal Profile Payment Limits Bank transfers from an unverified account are capped at $999.99 per week.8Venmo. Personal Profile Bank Transfer Limits

Once you verify, the weekly sending limit rises to $60,000.7Venmo. Personal Profile Payment Limits Venmo notes that it may adjust limits based on your account history and activity, so these are defaults rather than guarantees.

What Happens If You Refuse

Two consequences go beyond the transaction caps. If Venmo cannot match your account to a valid taxpayer identification number and you receive reportable payments, the platform may be required to apply backup withholding at 24 percent on those payments.9Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding Nearly a quarter of that money would go to the IRS before it ever reaches you.

Your account can also be frozen for a verification issue. Venmo advises replying to the suspension email or contacting customer support to work through reinstatement, and it does not publish a set timeline for that process.10Venmo. Frozen Account

If You Don’t Have an SSN

Venmo accepts an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number in place of a Social Security number. You can verify an ITIN by submitting your SSN or ITIN card, an IRS assignment letter, a W-2 or paystub from the last 12 months showing the number, or an IRS letter dated within the past 12 months.11Venmo. Customer Identification Document Requirements An ITIN unlocks the same verified features as an SSN.

If you’re setting up a business profile and have an Employer Identification Number, you can submit the EIN during signup instead of your personal SSN.12Venmo. How to Sign Up for a Business Profile Sole proprietors without an EIN can still open a business profile using their SSN or ITIN. Whichever tax ID you provide is what Venmo will use if it has to file a 1099-K for you.

How Venmo Handles Your SSN

Venmo operates through a banking partner, The Bancorp Bank, N.A., which collects and stores personal information including your Social Security number. Bancorp’s privacy notice says this data may be shared for everyday business purposes such as responding to court orders, legal investigations, and reporting to credit bureaus.13Venmo. Bancorp Privacy Policy Notice Venmo says financial information is encrypted and stored on secure servers behind firewalls, though it does not publicly detail which encryption standards apply to stored data. The exposure is roughly what you take on when opening a bank account, and the same federal data protection rules apply.
