Does UTMA Affect Financial Aid Eligibility? The 20% Asset Rule

A UTMA account does affect financial aid, and usually not in the student’s favor. The federal aid formula treats a Uniform Transfers to Minors Act account as the student’s own asset and assesses 20% of its balance toward college costs each year.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility Guide The same money sitting in a parent’s account would be assessed at 12%, after a protection allowance.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 U.S. Code 1087oo – Student Aid Index for Dependent Students So yes, a custodial account can meaningfully shrink a financial aid package, and the size of the hit is predictable enough that families can plan around it.

Why UTMA Money Counts as the Student’s Asset

Every deposit into a UTMA account is an irrevocable gift. Once a donor transfers cash, stocks, or other property into the account, legal ownership passes to the minor and cannot be clawed back.3HelpWithMyBank.gov. Because the minor holds legal title, the aid system treats the full balance as the student’s wealth. It does not matter that the student cannot touch the money without the custodian’s approval, or that a parent or grandparent picks the investments. Ownership drives the classification, and the classification holds until the custodianship ends at the age of majority, which runs from 18 to 25 depending on the state and the terms of the account.

What the 20% Rate Actually Costs in Aid

The federal formula produces a Student Aid Index, or SAI, which estimates how much a family can be expected to contribute. Assets held in the student’s name, including a UTMA, are assessed at a flat 20%, with no protection allowance.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility Guide A $30,000 UTMA balance adds $6,000 to the expected contribution, which translates directly into $6,000 less in need-based grants and subsidized loans for that year.

Parental assets get softer treatment. Parents first receive an asset protection allowance that excludes a slice of their savings entirely. That allowance runs from roughly $5,500 to $10,500 for a two-parent household, depending on the age of the older parent.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 U.S. Code 1087oo – Student Aid Index for Dependent Students Whatever remains is assessed at 12%.5Federal Student Aid. Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility

The gap in plain numbers: $30,000 in a student’s UTMA account produces a $6,000 expected contribution. The same $30,000 sitting in a 50-year-old parent’s savings account, assuming a $7,000 protection allowance, produces a $2,760 expected contribution. The UTMA more than doubles the hit.

How to Report a UTMA on the FAFSA

The FAFSA asks for the net worth of a student’s investments, and a UTMA belongs in that category. Report it as a student asset no matter who serves as custodian, whether a parent, grandparent, or unrelated adult.6Federal Student Aid. Filling Out the FAFSA A grandparent-managed account still belongs to the student for aid purposes, because the child is the legal owner.

Use the balance as of the date you sign and submit the FAFSA, not a year-end figure or an average. Include cash, stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. If the account holds real estate or other illiquid property, report its current net value.

Income earned inside the account hits the aid formula separately. Dividends, interest, and capital gains from UTMA investments show up on the student’s tax return in the base year, which is two years before the academic year. For the 2026–2027 FAFSA, that base year is 2024. Taxable earnings from the account in 2024 flow into the student’s adjusted gross income on the form and push the SAI higher, on top of the hit from the balance itself.

How Private Colleges Treat UTMA Accounts

Many private colleges award their own institutional grants and scholarships through the CSS Profile, a supplemental application run by the College Board.7The College Board. What Is CSS Profile – Higher Ed The Profile asks for more financial detail than the FAFSA, and each school can set its own formula.

Some schools assess student-held custodial accounts at rates different from the federal 20%. Others look back at account balances over several years rather than a single filing-date snapshot, which blunts the effect of spending down the account right before you file. A student can qualify for a Pell Grant and still see a smaller institutional award from a Profile school because of the same UTMA. Ask each prospective college’s financial aid office how it treats custodial accounts before you build a plan around any one strategy.

Ways to Reduce the Aid Impact

UTMA contributions cannot be reversed, so moving the money back into a parent’s name is not an option. A few other moves can lower how much of the account counts against the student.

Convert the UTMA to a Custodial 529

A custodian can liquidate the UTMA and move the proceeds into a custodial 529 college savings plan. For a dependent student, a custodial 529 is reported as a parent asset on the FAFSA rather than a student asset, which drops the assessment rate from 20% to 12%.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 U.S. Code 1087oo – Student Aid Index for Dependent Students The parental protection allowance applies too. On a $30,000 account, moving from the student rate to the parent rate can cut the expected contribution by roughly $3,000 a year.

The restrictions matter. The custodial 529 has to be titled the same way as the original UTMA. The child stays the beneficiary, and the custodian cannot swap in a sibling or another relative. When the student reaches the age of majority, full ownership transfers to them, just as it would have under the UTMA. Liquidating the account to fund the 529 may also trigger capital gains tax on appreciated holdings, so weigh the tax cost against the aid savings.

Spend Down the Account Before Filing

Because the FAFSA captures the balance on the filing date, spending UTMA funds on legitimate expenses before you file reduces the number you have to report. The custodian can use the money for anything that benefits the minor, which is a condition of the custodian’s fiduciary duty, and that includes a computer, textbooks, or other education costs incurred before the FAFSA goes in.4Social Security Administration. POMS SI 01120.205 – Uniform Transfers to Minors Act Prepaying a tuition deposit or room-and-board charge works the same way.

Watch the timing. The 2026–2027 FAFSA typically opens on October 1, 2025, and any spending to lower the balance should happen before you sign and submit the form. If you are also filing the CSS Profile, check whether each school uses a look-back period that would still see the higher earlier balance.

Check Whether the Simplified Formula Applies

Some lower-income families qualify for a simplified SAI formula that ignores assets entirely. If the parents filed a tax return and had an adjusted gross income below the threshold, or received certain means-tested benefits, the asset questions on the FAFSA may not apply. In that case the UTMA balance drops out of the calculation. Families near the income cutoff should check the simplified-formula criteria before assuming the account will cost them aid.

What Changes at the Age of Majority

When the beneficiary reaches the age the custodianship ends, usually between 18 and 21 and up to 25 in some states, the custodian has to transfer the remaining assets to the now-adult beneficiary.8FINRA. 2019 Report on Examination Findings and Observations – UTMA and UGMA Accounts The student then has full control of the money with no custodial restrictions.

The aid classification does not change. The funds were already counted as the student’s asset in the custodial account, and they stay a student asset after the transfer. What changes is practical access: the student can now spend or invest the money without needing the custodian’s approval.

What’s New for the 2026–2027 FAFSA

The 2026–2027 FAFSA restores the exclusion for small family-owned businesses with 100 or fewer full-time employees and for family farms.9Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 FAFSA Form and Pell Grant Eligibility Updates That change does not touch UTMA accounts directly, but it lowers the parental asset total for families who own qualifying businesses or live on a farm, which raises the relative weight of a student’s UTMA in the formula.

The core assessment rates hold: 20% for student assets, 12% for parental assets.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility Guide If you have an existing UTMA, run the numbers on converting it to a custodial 529 or spending it down before filing, and ask any CSS Profile school how it will handle the account before you decide.
