Does Upstart affect your credit score? Checking your rate on Upstart does not, because that step uses a soft credit inquiry. Your score can move once you accept an offer, which triggers a hard inquiry, and it will keep moving over the life of the loan based on whether you pay on time.
Checking Your Rate Uses a Soft Pull
When you request a rate quote on Upstart, the platform runs a soft credit inquiry. A soft inquiry lets the lender preview your credit file without affecting your score.1Upstart. How Loan Applications Impact Your Credit Score Other lenders cannot see this inquiry on your report; it only appears when you pull your own credit file.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry You can check your rate as many times as you like at this stage.
Accepting an Offer Triggers a Hard Inquiry
Once you select an offer and move forward with the formal application, Upstart or its partner bank runs a hard credit inquiry. That inquiry is visible to anyone who pulls your report.1Upstart. How Loan Applications Impact Your Credit Score A hard inquiry usually causes a small, temporary dip. It stays on your report for two years, though its scoring influence fades after about twelve months.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry
Personal Loans Are Not in the FICO Rate-Shopping Window
With mortgages or auto loans, multiple hard inquiries within 45 days count as one in newer FICO models. Personal loans do not get that protection. FICO’s rate-shopping treatment only applies to mortgage, auto, and student loan inquiries.3myFICO. How to Rate Shop and Minimize the Impact to Your FICO Scores If you submit full applications to several personal loan lenders in the same month, each hard pull can reduce your score on its own. The way around it is to use soft-pull prequalification tools, like Upstart’s rate check, to compare offers before you commit.
How the Loan Affects Your Score After Funding
Once the loan is funded, Upstart reports your account to Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion each month. The reported data includes the origination date, original balance, current balance, and payment history.4Upstart Answers. Do Personal Loans Show Up on Credit Reports Payment history is the single largest factor in a FICO score, roughly 35% of the calculation.5myFICO. How Payment History Impacts Your Credit Score On-time payments every month, over years, do the heavy lifting.
The loan can also help your credit mix if your file has mostly been credit cards. A personal loan is installment credit, not revolving credit, so the balance does not factor into your credit utilization ratio the way a card balance does. Paying it down reduces your total debt load, which matters to future lenders looking at debt-to-income, but it will not lower utilization directly.
A new account temporarily shortens the average age of your credit, which can nudge your score down at first. Over a three- or five-year term, the account ages and that effect reverses.
Paying the Loan Off
Paying off your Upstart loan can cause a small, temporary score drop. Closing an installment account reduces the number of active accounts on your report and can shrink your credit mix, particularly if it was your only installment loan. The dip is usually minor. Bureaus receive updated information from lenders every 30 to 45 days, so scores typically recover within one or two reporting cycles.6Equifax. Why Your Credit Scores May Drop After Paying Off Debt Upstart does not charge a prepayment penalty, so paying early costs you nothing extra.7Upstart. How to Pay Off Your Loan
Late Payments, Fees, and Charge-Offs
Missing payments is the fastest way the loan can hurt you. Once a payment is at least 30 days past due, the lender can report the delinquency to all three bureaus. A single 30-day late mark can drop a score by 100 points or more, depending on how high the score was to start. The damage deepens at 60 and 90 days past due.
Upstart charges a late fee of the greater of $15 or 5% of the past-due amount once a payment is more than 10 calendar days late. The fee is added to your balance. If you know you are going to miss a due date, call Upstart’s servicing team before the payment is late; some lenders offer short-term accommodations that can prevent a negative credit mark.
If the loan stays unpaid long enough, often around 120 days for personal loans, the lender can classify the account as a charge-off. A charge-off means the lender has written the debt off as a loss for its own accounting, but you still owe the balance, and the account may be sent to a collection agency, which creates a second negative entry. Under federal law, these negative marks can stay on your credit file for seven years from the date the delinquency began.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports
Fixing Errors on Your Report
Federal law requires lenders and credit bureaus to report accurate information. If something tied to your Upstart loan looks wrong, say a payment marked late that you made on time, an incorrect balance, or a missing account, you have the right to dispute it.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
