Uber sends drivers a 1099-K, a 1099-NEC, both, or neither, depending on how much you earned and where that income came from. You get a Form 1099-K if your ride and delivery payments processed through the platform exceed $20,000 across more than 200 transactions in the calendar year. You get a Form 1099-NEC if Uber paid you at least $600 directly in bonuses, referrals, or other incentives. Fall below both thresholds and no form arrives — but the income is still taxable and still reportable.
When Uber Sends a 1099-K
Uber processes payments between riders and drivers, which makes it a third-party settlement organization in the eyes of the IRS, the same category as payment apps and online marketplaces.1Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K Federal law requires Uber to send a 1099-K only when both conditions are met in the same calendar year: gross payments above $20,000 and more than 200 transactions.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Issues FAQs on Form 1099-K Threshold Under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill; Dollar Limit Reverts to $20,000
You may have heard the threshold was dropping to $600. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 did lower it on paper, but the IRS delayed implementation for several years. The One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4, 2025, permanently reverted the threshold back to $20,000 and 200 transactions and replaced the $600 figure entirely.3Internal Revenue Service. One, Big, Beautiful Bill Provisions If you drive part-time and do not hit both numbers, you will not get a 1099-K.
When Uber Sends a 1099-NEC
Uber pays drivers directly for referral bonuses, promotional incentives, and quest rewards. Because that money comes from Uber itself rather than flowing through rider payments, it belongs on a Form 1099-NEC (Nonemployee Compensation) instead of the 1099-K. You will receive a 1099-NEC if those direct payments total $600 or more for the year.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC (04/2025) The $600 threshold comes from Section 6041A of the Internal Revenue Code, which covers payments for services performed by non-employees.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6041A – Returns Regarding Payments of Remuneration for Services and Direct Sales
The dividing line is simple: rider and customer payments processed through the platform go on the 1099-K; bonuses and incentives Uber pays you go on the 1099-NEC.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC (04/2025) Some drivers get both forms, some get just one, some get neither.
What Each Form Actually Reports
Form 1099-K shows the gross amount riders and customers paid, not what landed in your bank account. The figure in Box 1a includes Uber’s service fees, booking fees, and commissions before any deductions. If riders paid $25,000 for your trips and Uber kept $6,000 in platform fees, the 1099-K still shows $25,000. You recover the difference by deducting those fees as business expenses when you file.
Form 1099-NEC reports the exact dollar amount Uber paid you in bonuses and incentives. There is no platform-fee inflation on this form because the money came directly from Uber.
Separately, Uber provides a Tax Summary in the Driver Dashboard. This is not a form you file, and it is not sent to the IRS. It breaks down your income and expenses — Uber fees, tolls, booking charges, and other costs — so you can reconcile the gross figures on your 1099s against the amounts you actually kept.
If You Do Not Receive Either Form
Plenty of part-time drivers never cross the $20,000 and 200-transaction threshold for a 1099-K or the $600 threshold for a 1099-NEC. Not receiving a form does not eliminate your tax obligation. The IRS requires you to file a return if your net self-employment earnings reach just $400 for the year.6Internal Revenue Service. Check if You Need to File a Tax Return Net earnings means total income minus deductible business expenses, not the gross amount riders paid.
If no 1099 arrives, use Uber’s monthly earnings statements and the Tax Summary to calculate your total income. You report it the same way and owe the same taxes whether or not Uber generated a form.
State Thresholds Can Be Lower
The $20,000 and 200-transaction threshold is the federal standard. Some states set their own 1099-K reporting rules at lower amounts, sometimes as low as a few hundred dollars in gross payments. Depending on where you drive, you could receive a 1099-K at the state level even when your earnings sit well below the federal threshold. Check your state’s tax authority for the number that applies to you.
Getting Your Forms and Fixing Errors
Uber makes 1099 forms available for download through the Driver Dashboard by January 31 each year, the federal deadline for issuers to furnish these forms to recipients. Digital copies appear as PDFs in the tax forms section of the app. If you did not opt into electronic delivery, expect a physical copy by mail within a couple of weeks after that date. You can switch on electronic delivery in the app settings.
If a form contains an error — an incorrect gross amount, wrong personal information — contact Uber to request a corrected form. The IRS cannot fix a 1099 issued by a third party. If you cannot get a corrected version before you need to file, you do not have to delay your return. You can zero out the error by reporting the incorrect amount on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Line 8z as other income and then subtracting the same amount on Line 24z as an adjustment, resulting in no net effect on your taxable income.7Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding If Your Taxpayer Info Is Wrong
Before Uber can generate your tax forms, you have to provide a taxpayer identification number through the Driver Dashboard. Most drivers use their Social Security Number; if you operate as a sole proprietorship with an Employer Identification Number, you can use that instead.8Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Taxpayer Identification Number Requirement You complete an electronic W-9 within the app, certifying under penalty of perjury that the information is accurate.
Getting this right matters. If your taxpayer identification number is missing or incorrect, Uber is required to withhold 24% of your payments and send that money directly to the IRS.9Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding You would eventually recover the withheld amount as a credit on your tax return, but in the meantime you lose access to a significant chunk of your earnings. Confirm your name, taxpayer ID, and mailing address in the tax information section of the app before year-end.
