Does TRICARE Dental Cover Orthodontics? Costs and Networks

Yes, TRICARE dental covers orthodontics, but only through the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) and only for certain family members. The program pays 50 percent of the allowed charge up to a lifetime maximum of $1,750 per person, and it excludes active duty service members entirely along with spouses age 24 and older.1TRICARE. Who Qualifies for the Orthodontic Benefit

Active duty service members cannot use this benefit. They receive dental care through military dental treatment facilities and are not eligible to enroll in the TDP at all.3MyAirForceBenefits. TRICARE Dental Program (TDP)

Orthodontic coverage is available to:

  • Children of active duty or Guard/Reserve sponsors, up to age 21, or up to age 23 if enrolled full-time at an accredited college and receiving at least 50 percent of their financial support from the sponsor.4TRICARE Newsroom. TRICARE Dental Program Orthodontic Coverage: What You Need to Know

The age-23 spouse cutoff surprises many families. A spouse who is 24 or older simply cannot get orthodontic benefits through TDP, no matter their enrollment status. If a beneficiary ages out mid-treatment, United Concordia prorates its payments based on how many months the person stayed eligible. Eligibility has to be current in DEERS, which you can check through milConnect.4TRICARE Newsroom. TRICARE Dental Program Orthodontic Coverage: What You Need to Know

What the Program Pays For

Covered services include traditional braces, clear aligners, retainers, and diagnostic casts.5MyAirForceBenefits. What You’ll Actually Pay

The TDP pays 50 percent of the United Concordia allowable charge for orthodontic treatment. You pay the other 50 percent. Everything the program pays toward orthodontics counts against a lifetime maximum of $1,750 per person.1TRICARE. TDP Maximums That cap is a lifetime figure, not a yearly reset.

United Concordia walks through a $4,000 treatment example on its site. The program covers $1,750 (the full lifetime maximum) and the family owes $2,250: the $2,000 half-share, plus the $250 the program cannot pay because the cap is exhausted.2United Concordia TDP. Orthodontics After the $1,750 is used up, you can still get the network-discounted rate on any remaining work if you stay with a network provider.7Health.mil. TDP Supplement

The $1,750 orthodontic lifetime maximum is separate from the $1,500 annual maximum that applies to other dental services. One wrinkle to know: initial orthodontic diagnostic X-rays and exams count against the $1,500 annual cap, not the orthodontic cap.1TRICARE. TDP Maximums

Payments Come Out Over Time

United Concordia doesn’t release the benefit in a single lump. Using the same $4,000 case, payments start with a banding payment of $437.50 (25 percent of the $1,750 maximum), followed by eight quarterly payments of about $164.2United Concordia TDP. Orthodontics The beneficiary has to stay enrolled in the TDP during each month a payment is issued. Drop coverage mid-treatment and the remaining payments are forfeited.4TRICARE Newsroom. Network vs. Non-Network Orthodontists

A network orthodontist is the cleaner path. You pay 50 percent of the TDP allowance, nothing more; the provider accepts the negotiated rate and can’t balance bill, and the office files claims for you.8TRICARE Newsroom. With a non-network provider, you still owe the 50 percent cost-share and you’re also on the hook for anything the provider charges above what TDP considers allowable. You may need to pay upfront and file your own claims.9TRICARE Newsroom. Get a Pretreatment Estimate First

The TDP requires a predetermination before orthodontic work begins. The orthodontist evaluates the patient, builds a treatment plan, and submits it to United Concordia marked as a predetermination request.10United Concordia TDP. Orthodontic Care United Concordia then sends both you and the provider a payment schedule showing coverage amounts, timing, and your share.4TRICARE Newsroom. This step locks in the numbers so no one is surprised mid-treatment.

A Separate Medical Benefit for Severe Congenital Anomalies

Outside the TDP, TRICARE’s medical benefit covers orthodontics only when it is part of surgical correction of a severe congenital anomaly of the head or neck, such as cleft palate, Pierre Robin syndrome, Treacher Collins syndrome, Crouzon syndrome, or certain chromosomal conditions including Trisomy 21. It requires preauthorization and a case-by-case review, and routine malocclusion does not qualify.11Health.mil. Enrollment and Premiums

Orthodontic coverage requires enrollment in the TDP, a voluntary plan with a 12-month minimum commitment. Sponsors enroll through milConnect, by phone, or by mail, and coverage begins the first of the next month (or the second month if the enrollment comes in after the 20th).12TRICARE.
