Does TransUnion Use FICO or VantageScore? Both

TransUnion uses both FICO and VantageScore. It doesn’t pick one or the other, because TransUnion isn’t a scoring company at all. It’s a credit bureau: it collects your account history, balances, payments, and public records, then licenses that file to whichever scoring model a lender or app asks for. The same TransUnion data can produce a FICO Score 8, a FICO Score 10T, a VantageScore 3.0, a VantageScore 4.0, an industry-specific auto or bankcard score, and several others. Which number you see depends entirely on who’s pulling it and why.

Who Actually Generates the Score

TransUnion is a data warehouse. It tracks your open and closed accounts, balances, payment history, and public records like bankruptcies, and it sells that information to lenders and other businesses that need to evaluate credit risk.1TransUnion. What to Look for in Your Credit Report FICO and VantageScore are separate companies that build the math converting that data into a three-digit number. TransUnion has licensing agreements with both, so a lender requesting a score on your TransUnion file can receive either a FICO score or a VantageScore, depending on what it ordered.

That’s why “the TransUnion score” isn’t really one thing. You could have a dozen valid scores generated from your TransUnion file on the same day, all different, all correct for the model that produced them.

The Score You See at Home vs. the Score a Lender Sees

This is where most of the confusion starts. You check your score on a free app, see a 740, and then a lender pulls your credit and quotes a rate based on a 705. Neither number is wrong. They’re different models applied to the same underlying TransUnion data.

Most free monitoring platforms, including TransUnion’s own free service, show you a VantageScore 3.0.2TransUnion. Free Credit Monitoring Third-party apps like Credit Karma and Credit Sesame also show TransUnion VantageScores. Most lenders, on the other hand, still order some version of FICO. FICO reports that 90% of top lenders use FICO Scores in their credit decisions.

The gap between a VantageScore and a FICO on identical data can easily run 20 to 40 points, so the free number is a useful trend indicator but a poor prediction of a lender’s decision. If your bank or a credit card issuer provides a free FICO Score on your statement, that one will track much more closely with what a mortgage or auto lender actually pulls.

Why the Same File Produces Different Numbers

Each scoring version weighs your credit data differently. A few differences matter more than the rest.

Medical Collections

This is the sharpest split between the model families. VantageScore 3.0 and 4.0 exclude medical collection accounts entirely, whether paid or unpaid, regardless of amount or age.3VantageScore. VantageScore Removes Medical Debt Collection Records From Latest Scoring Models VantageScore estimates the change can lift affected consumers’ scores by up to 20 points.

FICO handles medical debt differently by version. FICO 9 and FICO 10 reduce the weight of unpaid medical collections and ignore paid medical collections altogether. FICO Score 8, still the most commonly used version in lending, does neither: a paid medical collection still drags your score down under FICO 8, and unpaid medical debt hits as hard as any other collection. If your TransUnion file contains medical collections, the model choice can swing your score dramatically.

Trended Data

VantageScore 4.0 and FICO 10T both use trended data, meaning they look at how your balances and payments move over time instead of a single snapshot. Steadily paying down a card over six months gets you credit under these newer models that older ones like FICO Score 8 can’t see. FICO says 10T can expand mortgage approval rates by up to 5% without adding risk.4FICO. FICO Score 10T for Mortgage Originations

Thin Credit Files

VantageScore can score consumers with very thin files, sometimes just a month or two of history. Older FICO versions typically need at least six months of activity before returning a score. If you’re new to credit, a VantageScore on a free app may show a number when a FICO pull comes back unscorable.

Score Range

Most general-purpose FICO and VantageScore models run 300 to 850. Industry-specific FICO versions used by auto lenders and card issuers, like FICO Auto Score and FICO Bankcard Score, run 250 to 900 to give lenders finer distinctions in those markets.5Experian. Which Model a Lender Will Use

You don’t get to pick. The lender does. But different industries have settled into patterns, so you can usually predict which model applies to you.

Mortgage lenders have historically used FICO because Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac required it. That’s shifting. The Federal Housing Finance Agency has validated both FICO 10T and VantageScore 4.0 for mortgage underwriting.6FHFA. Credit Scores As of July 2025, FHFA announced lenders can use either VantageScore 4.0 or Classic FICO when selling loans to the government-sponsored enterprises.7Fannie Mae. Credit Score Models and Reports Initiative A broader plan to require both FICO 10T and VantageScore 4.0 on every loan was postponed from a fourth-quarter 2025 target to a date still to be determined.8FHFA. FHFA Announces Key Updates for Implementation of Enterprise Credit Score Requirements For now, expect Classic FICO on a mortgage application, with VantageScore 4.0 as a possible alternative.

Auto lenders frequently order industry-specific FICO Auto Scores that emphasize car-loan repayment patterns. Credit card issuers are mixed. Some pull FICO Score 8; others use VantageScore, especially when evaluating applicants with shorter histories. If it matters, ask before applying. Some lenders will tell you which model and version they’re using.

Fix the Data, Not the Score

Because every model runs on the same underlying TransUnion file, an error in the file corrupts every score that file produces.
