No Toyota purchased on or after October 1, 2025 qualifies for a federal EV tax credit. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025, ended all three federal clean vehicle credits for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.1Internal Revenue Service. One Big Beautiful Bill Provisions If you bought or leased a qualifying Toyota bZ4X, RAV4 Prime, or Prius Prime before that cutoff, you can still claim the credit on your 2025 return. Anything after that date carries no federal purchase incentive.
What the Law Changed
The Inflation Reduction Act originally kept clean vehicle credits alive through 2032. Public Law 119-21 cut that short by more than seven years, amending the termination date for each of the three relevant tax code sections:
- Section 30D, the new clean vehicle credit worth up to $7,500, ends for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 30D – Clean Vehicle Credit
- Section 25E, the used clean vehicle credit, carries the same cutoff.3Internal Revenue Service. Used Clean Vehicle Credit
- Section 45W, the commercial clean vehicle credit that leasing companies used, also terminates on that date.4Internal Revenue Service. FAQs for Modification of Sections 25C, 25D, 25E, 30C, 30D, 45L, 45W, and 179D Under Public Law 119-21
The lease pathway matters here because it was how most Toyota buyers actually got a federal credit. When a dealership leased an EV, the leasing company claimed the Section 45W commercial credit, which had looser sourcing rules than the consumer credit, and often passed some or all of the $7,500 through as a lower payment.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 45W – Credit for Qualified Commercial Clean Vehicles That workaround is closed. Attractive lease deals still exist on models like the bZ4X, but any discount now comes from Toyota or the dealer, not from federal law.
Why Toyota’s Consumer Credit History Was Complicated
Even before the cutoff, buying a Toyota outright rarely produced a Section 30D credit. The Inflation Reduction Act required final assembly in North America. The bZ4X is assembled in Japan, which disqualified it.6Alternative Fuels Data Center. Electric Vehicles with Final Assembly in North America The RAV4 Prime and Prius Prime faced similar assembly constraints. Vehicles that did clear the assembly hurdle still had to meet battery component and critical mineral sourcing thresholds to earn the full amount. If you bought a Toyota before October 2025 and captured a federal credit, it almost certainly came through a lease.
Claiming the Credit on a Pre-Cutoff Purchase
You can still claim the credit on your 2025 federal return, which most people file in early 2026. A transition rule helps buyers who took delivery late: if the vehicle was placed in service after September 30, 2025, you still qualify as long as you acquired it on or before that date. The IRS accepts a binding written contract and a payment made on or before September 30, 2025 as proof of acquisition.7Internal Revenue Service. Report the credit on IRS Form 8936 with Schedule A (Form 8936). You will need the seventeen-digit VIN, the battery capacity, and the date of sale. The dealer should have given you a copy of the seller report submitted to the IRS at the time of sale, which lists the vehicle’s maximum credit eligibility.8Internal Revenue Service. Income and Price Caps Still Apply
The pre-cutoff credit is capped by income. Use your modified adjusted gross income from either the year of delivery or the prior year, whichever is lower:
- Married filing jointly: $300,000
- Head of household: $225,000
- All other filers: $150,00010Internal Revenue Service. Topic B – Frequently Asked Questions About Income and Price Limitations for the New Clean Vehicle Credit
Vehicle MSRP caps apply too. SUVs, vans, and pickups top out at $80,000; all other vehicles at $55,000. The RAV4 Prime uses the SUV cap, the Prius Prime the $55,000 cap.10Internal Revenue Service. The new vehicle credit is nonrefundable for personal use. If your federal tax liability is less than the credit, you lose the difference, and there is no carryforward.11Internal Revenue Service. Watch for Recapture if You Took the Dealer Discount
If you transferred your credit to the dealer for an upfront price reduction, the dealer gave you that discount based on your self-reported eligibility. When you file, the IRS checks whether you actually qualified. If your income exceeds the threshold, you owe the full transferred amount back as additional tax on your 2025 return, paid to the IRS, not to the dealer.12Internal Revenue Service. Used Toyota EVs Followed the Same Cutoff
Section 25E, the previously owned clean vehicle credit, ended on the same September 30, 2025 date.3Internal Revenue Service. Used Clean Vehicle Credit Before then, a used Toyota EV bought from a dealer for $25,000 or less could yield 30% of the sale price, up to $4,000. The same acquisition-versus-delivery transition rule applies to late deliveries with a binding pre-cutoff contract and payment.
Income limits for the used credit ran lower than the new vehicle thresholds: $150,000 married filing jointly, $112,500 head of household, and $75,000 for all other filers. The used credit can only be claimed once every three years.3Internal Revenue Service. Used Clean Vehicle Credit
The Home Charger Credit Runs a Little Longer
One federal EV-related credit survived the vehicle cutoff. Section 30C, the alternative fuel vehicle refueling property credit, still covers 30% of the cost of a home EV charger up to $1,000, for property placed in service before July 1, 2026.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 30C – Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit There is a geographic condition: your home must sit in a low-income community census tract or a non-urban census tract.14Internal Revenue Service. What You Can Still Get on a Toyota EV
Federal purchase incentives are gone, but state programs are not. Many states run their own EV rebates, tax credits, or reduced registration fees, independent of federal law. Amounts and eligibility vary, so check your state’s energy office or department of revenue. Many states also charge an annual supplemental registration fee for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, which is worth factoring into ownership costs.
Toyota continues to run manufacturer incentives on some EV and plug-in hybrid models, including lease cash. These are not tax credits and can change month to month. When you sit down with a dealer, ask for a breakdown of which incentives are manufacturer-funded and which, if any, are state-level, so you know exactly what you are getting.
