Does Tire Warranty Cover Sidewall Damage? Road Hazard Plans

A standard tire manufacturer warranty does not cover sidewall damage in almost any case. Sidewall bulges, cuts, and blowouts are classified as road hazard damage, which manufacturer warranties explicitly exclude. The only standard-warranty exception is a confirmed manufacturing defect, and the practical route to coverage for everyone else is a separate road hazard plan bought from the tire maker or the retailer.

Why the Standard Warranty Says No

Every major tire manufacturer builds its standard limited warranty on the same line: the company covers what it controls in the factory, and nothing else. Defects in materials and workmanship are in. Damage from the road is out.

Those warranties define road hazards broadly. Cuts, snags, bruises, impact damage, and punctures are all named as excluded events, and sidewall injuries almost always fall inside that list. Michelin’s limited warranty excludes road hazards and covers only defects in workmanship and materials for the life of the original usable tread or six years from purchase, whichever comes first.1Michelin. Passenger and Light Truck Tire Limited Warranty Bridgestone’s standard warranty uses nearly identical language, excluding “puncture, cut, impact break, stone drill, bruise, bulge, snag” and any other road hazard damage.2Bridgestone. Bridgestone Firestone Supplemental Warranty Details Uniroyal names sidewall rubber damage specifically as an excluded road hazard injury.3Uniroyal Tires. Tire Warranty FAQs BFGoodrich likewise excludes road hazard damage.4Toyota. BFGoodrich Limited Warranty Manual

If something on the road caused the sidewall damage, the manufacturer will not pay for it.

The One Exception: A Manufacturing Defect

Sidewall bulges and bubbles are occasionally caused by production problems rather than impacts. Poor bonding of internal materials, contamination during manufacturing, or failures in the ply cord structure can cause a bulge to appear, sometimes within the first few months of use.5Neotires. Tire Bulge or Bubble: Why It Happens and What to Do When an inspection confirms a defect, the standard warranty applies.

Proving it is the hard part. Dealers and manufacturers look for signs of external impact: scuffs on the sidewall, dents on the wheel rim near the bulge, cuts on the inner liner. Any of those indicators, and the claim is typically denied as road hazard damage.3Uniroyal Tires. Tire Warranty FAQs Les Schwab notes that manufacturing-related bulges do occur but are rare, and an in-store inspection is required to determine the cause.6Les Schwab. What Do Tire Sidewall Bubbles Mean

If the defect is confirmed, most manufacturers replace the tire for free within an early window and prorate the credit after that. Michelin’s terms give free replacement within 12 months or before 25 percent of tread wear, with prorated credit beyond that point based on remaining tread.1Michelin. Treadwear and Mileage Warranties Don’t Help

A treadwear or mileage warranty will not cover a tire that failed from sidewall damage. These warranties guarantee a tire’s longevity under normal wear, measured by how many miles the tread lasts before reaching 2/32 of an inch, and have nothing to do with impact damage.7Tire Rack. How Do Tire Warranties Work Walmart’s treadwear warranty lists road hazard injury, including cuts, snags, impact damage, and punctures, as conditions that disqualify a tire from treadwear claims.8Walmart. Road Hazard Plans: The Coverage That Actually Applies

Road hazard warranties, sometimes sold as tire protection plans, are the type of coverage designed to catch sidewall damage. They are either packaged with certain tires by the manufacturer or sold at purchase by the retailer, and they target the gap the standard warranty leaves open: potholes, nails, glass, curb strikes, and other hazards encountered during normal driving.

Manufacturer Road Hazard Programs

Only a handful of tire lines come with manufacturer-backed road hazard coverage, and the windows are usually short. Continental’s Total Confidence Plan replaces a damaged tire for free within the first 12 months of purchase or the first 2/32 of an inch of tread wear, and applies to all Continental passenger and light truck replacement tires.9Continental Tire. Warranty Bridgestone offers a supplemental road hazard warranty only on its DriveGuard run-flat line, running until the first 2/32 of an inch of tread wear, 12,000 miles, or 12 months, whichever comes first.2Bridgestone. Retailer Road Hazard Plans

For most drivers, the practical option is a plan sold by the tire retailer at purchase, usually for a modest per-tire fee. These tend to run longer and cover more than manufacturer programs.

  • Costco covers tires for 60 months or until tread reaches 2/32 of an inch, with prorated credit based on remaining tread. The plan addresses cuts, non-repairable punctures, and impact damage, and requires proof of proper rotation, balancing, and inflation.11Costco. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
  • Sam’s Club’s Premium Tire Installation Package is $20 per tire and includes five years of road hazard protection covering cuts, snags, bruises, impact breaks, and punctures. If a tire cannot be repaired, Sam’s Club gives prorated credit toward a replacement based on unused tread, and notes directly that sidewall damage cannot be repaired and the tire must be replaced.12Sam’s Club. • Discount Tire sells tire protection certificates that cover non-repairable road hazard damage for three years or until tread reaches 3/32 of an inch. If a tire cannot be repaired, the customer gets a full refund of the purchase price, with no proration.14Discount Tire. Certificates
  • Walmart’s optional road hazard warranty covers non-repairable punctures and impact breaks. Eligibility is at Walmart’s discretion, and damage from accidents, vandalism, racing, under-inflation, or off-road use is excluded.8Walmart. Tire Warranty Terms and Conditions

Even with a road hazard plan, expect to pay out of pocket for mounting, balancing, disposal fees, and taxes on the replacement. The warranty typically covers only the tire itself.10Consumer Reports. Getting a Grip on Tire Warranties

Sidewall Damage Means Replacement, Not Repair

One detail shapes every sidewall claim: the sidewall is not a repairable area. Tire Industry Association standards limit puncture repairs to the center of the tread, and any damage to the shoulder or sidewall makes the tire unrepairable.15Tire Industry Association. Consumer Safety Overview – Tire Repair The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association classifies the sidewall and shoulder as no-repair zones because the sidewall flexes hundreds of times per mile, which causes any patch to fail unpredictably.16FixGo. Tire Sidewall Damage: Repair or Replace

If a shop offers to patch a sidewall puncture, industry guidance says to decline and get a second opinion. For warranty purposes it means the same thing in every case: an approved claim pays for a replacement tire, not a repair.

How to File a Claim

The process is similar whether the claim is a defect claim or a road hazard claim.

  • Take the tire to an authorized dealer or the retailer that sold it. Manufacturer defect claims go through authorized dealers, and some brands, such as Hankook, do not accept claims filed directly with the company. If the tires came on a new vehicle, start at the dealership.17Hankook Tire. Warranty FAQ
  • Bring documentation. The original purchase receipt, warranty paperwork, and maintenance records showing rotations, alignment checks, and inflation history all matter. Missing maintenance records is one of the most common reasons claims are denied.18Synchrony. Tire Warranty Overview and Descriptions
  • Submit the tire for professional inspection. The inspector decides whether the damage came from a manufacturing defect or an outside impact. Inspection is required for both defect and road hazard claims.
  • Photograph the damage. Clear photos can speed the review, especially when a tire has to go to the manufacturer for evaluation.18Synchrony. Tire Warranty Overview and Descriptions

What Voids Coverage

A few recurring issues get claims denied under both defect and road hazard coverage:

  • No maintenance records. Most warranties require proof of regular rotations, typically every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, plus evidence of proper inflation and alignment.19Firestone Complete Auto Care. Understanding Tire Warranty
  • Improper inflation. Running tires under- or overinflated makes the sidewall more vulnerable and can disqualify a claim.
  • Cosmetic damage. Scuffs, curb rash, and discoloration are excluded from virtually all warranties.
  • Off-road use, racing, or vandalism. Damage from any of these is universally excluded.
  • Expired coverage. Both time limits and tread depth minimums apply. Once a tire wears to 2/32 of an inch or the warranty period lapses, coverage ends.

How Prorated Replacement Works

When a road hazard claim is approved, the payout is often prorated against remaining tread. Less wear, more credit. Kal Tire replaces a tire damaged by a road hazard free of charge within the first 30 days of purchase; after 30 days, the customer pays a portion calculated as the percentage of tread depth used multiplied by the current selling price.20Kal Tire. Warranty Costco uses a similar tread-based credit structure over its five-year coverage window.11Costco. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions

Discount Tire is the outlier. Its tire protection certificates refund the full purchase price with no proration for the life of the certificate, three years or until the tire reaches 3/32 of an inch of tread.14Discount Tire. Certificates

When No Warranty Applies

Without road hazard coverage, and with no defect finding, there are two fallback options.

Auto Insurance

Pothole damage to a sidewall may fall under collision coverage, since hitting a pothole is treated as a single-vehicle collision. State Farm notes that tire damage alone is often not covered by auto insurance.21State Farm. When Potholes Become Costly Even when it is covered, a single replacement tire usually costs less than a typical deductible of $500 or $1,000, which makes a claim impractical for most drivers.22Insurance Information Institute. Does My Auto Insurance Cover Damage Caused by Potholes A claim also becomes part of your record, which can affect future premiums.23Allstate. Is Pothole Damage Covered

Municipal Pothole Claims

Some cities and states let residents file damage claims for potholes on public roads. Los Angeles accepts damage claims through an online portal, by mail, or in person at City Hall.24City of Los Angeles. Claim for Damages Success rates vary a lot by jurisdiction. In Michigan, government agencies are shielded by immunity laws and can only be held liable where the road was not kept in “reasonable repair”; most claims are ultimately denied, and claimants have 120 days to file formal notice.25Michigan Auto Law. If a Defect Claim Is Denied

When a manufacturer denies a defect claim you believe is legitimate, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is the federal framework for pushing back. The law requires that any written warranty on a consumer product costing more than $10 be designated as either “full” or “limited,” and a limited warranty cannot disclaim the implied warranty of merchantability, the basic legal promise that a product is fit for its intended purpose.26Federal Trade Commission. A Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law Consumers who successfully sue for breach of warranty under the Act can recover damages, court costs, and attorney fees.27Center for Auto Safety. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act: An Overview Warrantors also may not require the use of specific branded products or services to keep coverage in force, unless those products are provided free of charge. Litigation over a single tire is rare because the dollar amount is small, but the fee-shifting provision makes the law a credible tool for expensive tire sets or repeated denials that appear to violate the manufacturer’s own terms.

Tires on a New Car

Tires installed on a new vehicle are warranted by the tire manufacturer, not the automaker, and the new car warranty from the dealer does not cover tire damage. OEM coverage is limited to defects in materials and workmanship, typically for six years or 60,000 miles, and road hazard damage from nails, glass, potholes, or curbs is excluded exactly as it is for replacement tires.28Jerry V Honolulu Hyundai. Are Tires Covered Under a New Car Warranty For protection against sidewall damage caused by road conditions, a separate road hazard plan has to be purchased on its own.
