Does the UK Have a Credit Score? What Lenders Actually Use

The United Kingdom does not have a single, official credit score. Three private credit reference agencies each publish their own number on their own scale, and none of those numbers is what a lender actually sees when you apply. Banks and credit card companies pull the raw data from your credit report and run it through their own internal scoring model. So the honest answer to whether the UK has a credit score is: not one, and not the one you think.

Why the Numbers You See Don’t Match

Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion are the three consumer credit reference agencies (CRAs) operating in the UK.1Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Credit All three are private, commercial companies. They compete for lenders’ business, collect data independently, and each runs its own proprietary algorithm on its own scale.

Experian scores run from 0 to 999. TransUnion from 0 to 710. Equifax from 0 to 1,000. An “excellent” rating starts at 628 with TransUnion and at 961 with Experian. The numbers are not comparable, and a strong result on one platform tells you little about how a lender using a different agency will view you.

Because the agencies operate separately, your Experian file might contain slightly different information from your Equifax file, particularly if a creditor reports to one agency but not all three. A lender might check only one of them. Which one depends on their own commercial relationships. That is why you can be declined by one provider and approved by another within the same week without anything about your finances changing.

What Lenders Actually Use

This is where most people’s understanding of UK credit breaks down. When you apply for a card or a loan, the lender does not receive a score from a CRA and decide on that basis. They pull your raw credit report and feed it into their own internal model, which no one outside the company ever sees.

Those internal models use information the agencies do not hold: your income, how long you have been with your employer, how much you already owe that specific lender, and details you put on the application form itself. Two lenders looking at the same credit file often reach different conclusions because their risk appetites and target customers differ.

There is also no centralised “blacklist” of risky borrowers locking you out of the market.2Equifax UK. What Is a Credit Blacklist A rejection from one bank reflects that bank’s criteria at that moment, not a universal verdict.

Affordability Sits Alongside Creditworthiness

The Financial Conduct Authority requires lenders to assess whether you can afford the repayments without financial hardship.3Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). FCA Sets Out Plans to Help Build Mortgage Market of the Future The FCA has regulated consumer credit since taking over from the Office of Fair Trading in April 2014. Affordability checks look at income, existing debts, essential living costs, and how you would cope if interest rates rose. You can have a spotless credit history and still be declined because the affordability model says the repayments would stretch you too thin.

What’s on Your Credit Report

The report itself is not a score. It is the underlying file the scores are calculated from, and it is what lenders actually work with.

Your report shows every credit account you hold or have held in the past six years: credit cards, loans, mortgages, mobile phone contracts, and some utility accounts. For each one it records your limit or loan amount, the current balance, and whether you paid on time each month. Payment history is the single most influential factor on the file.

The electoral roll matters more than most people realise. Registering to vote at your current address is the standard way agencies verify who you are and where you live. If you are not on it, lenders may struggle to confirm your identity, and that alone can sink an application.

Public records show up too. County Court Judgments (CCJs), bankruptcies, and Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) sit on your file and carry serious weight. So do financial associations: if you hold a joint account or joint mortgage, a link is created between your file and the other person’s, and lenders may consider their history alongside yours on a joint application. That link persists after the shared account closes until you request a disassociation from the agency.

Every formal credit application triggers a “hard” search, which is recorded and stays visible for 12 months.4Experian. Searches on Your Report: Soft and Hard Credit Checks A cluster of hard searches in a short period reads as pressure to borrow. Soft searches, like checking your own report or a pre-approval quote, are invisible to other lenders.

How Long Negative Marks Stick

Most negative information follows a six-year rule, but the details differ.

  • Missed payments stay for six years from the date of the missed payment.
  • Defaults stay for six years from the date the default was recorded, even if you later pay the debt in full.5TransUnion UK. How Long Does Information Stay on My Credit Report For
  • A CCJ stays for six years regardless of whether you pay it off. If you pay in full within one month of the judgment date, you can apply to have it removed from the public register entirely.6Experian. What Are CCJs and How Do They Work
  • Bankruptcy stays for at least six years. A Bankruptcy Restriction Order for negligent or dishonest conduct can extend the restrictions for up to 15 years, and the entry remains for the full duration.

The clock is rigid. Settling a defaulted debt is still worth doing because lenders prefer a satisfied default to an outstanding one, but it will not shorten how long the record stays visible.

Seeing Your Own Data

You have a legal right to see what each agency holds. Under UK data protection law, you can request a free statutory credit report from any of the three CRAs.7Equifax UK. Equifax Statutory Credit Report The statutory report shows the raw data on your file but will not include the agency’s own headline score.

Online access is usually immediate after identity verification. A paper copy by post typically arrives within seven working days.7Equifax UK. Because information can differ between the three agencies, checking all three at least once a year is the reliable way to catch errors. If you find incorrect information, you can raise a dispute with the relevant agency, which places a Notice of Dispute marker on the entry for up to 28 days while it investigates.5TransUnion UK. How to Strengthen Your Standing Without a Single Score to Chase

Because no universal number exists, the practical goal is to make the underlying report clean and reassuring. Lenders want stability, reliability, and evidence that you handle debt without drama.

  • Register on the electoral roll at your current address. It is the simplest step and often the one with the most immediate impact.
  • Pay on time, every time. Direct debits for at least the minimum payment remove the risk of forgetting.
  • Keep credit utilisation below roughly 25 to 30 per cent of your available limit.10Experian. Improving Your Credit Score
  • Keep older accounts open where you can. A long, well-managed history reassures lenders; closing your oldest card shortens the visible track record.
  • Space out applications. A cluster of hard searches within weeks reads as pressure to borrow.
  • Check your report from all three agencies at least once a year and correct anything wrong.
  • If you have little or no history, a credit-builder card used for small purchases and repaid in full each month gradually establishes a positive record.10Experian. Improving Your Credit Score

Building credit in the UK is about consistent, unglamorous habits rather than any clever trick. The score you see on an app is a rough compass. The report behind it, and how a particular lender reads it, is what actually decides your application.
