Yes, National Guard members can get BAH, but only when they are serving on qualifying active duty orders. Whether the National Guard gets BAH depends on the legal authority behind your orders, how long they last, your pay grade, your dependency status, and where you live. Regular monthly drill weekends do not qualify. For 2026, BAH rates rose an average of 4.2 percent, effective January 1.1Department of War. Which Orders Trigger BAH
Read the authority line on your orders. That line decides everything.
- Title 10 (federal active duty): Deployments, mobilizations, and national emergencies typically fall here. Full BAH eligibility kicks in when the orders exceed 30 days.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 U.S.C. Chapter 1209 – Active Duty
- Title 32 (state duty, federally funded): The governor commands you while the federal government pays. Annual training, full-time National Guard duty, and many domestic disaster responses fall under Title 32. BAH follows the same duration rule as Title 10.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 U.S.C. 101 – Definitions
- State Active Duty (SAD): When a governor activates you under state authority alone, without federal funding, there is no federal BAH. Any housing money during SAD comes from the state and varies.
Active Guard/Reserve (AGR) members on long-term Title 10 or Title 32 orders receive full BAH for the length of their AGR tour, the same as active-duty counterparts.4The Official Army Benefits Website. Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) – Army Reserve
One boundary worth stating plainly: inactive duty training, meaning normal drill weekends, is not active duty and does not carry a standard housing allowance. Two-week annual training does count as active duty under Title 32, but because it is 30 days or fewer, it pays the short-term rate described next, not full BAH.
Full BAH vs. BAH RC/T
Two rates cover almost every Guard situation, and the 30-day mark on your orders decides which one you get.
Full BAH (Orders Over 30 Days)
If your active duty orders run more than 30 consecutive days and you do not live in government-provided housing, you receive full BAH. The rate is tied to your pay grade, dependency status, and a specific ZIP code. BAH is federally tax-exempt, so the take-home value is higher than the number printed on your pay statement.5Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Tax Exempt Allowances
BAH RC/T (Orders of 30 Days or Fewer)
Guard members on short active duty periods, including annual training, receive BAH RC/T. This rate is set nationally and ignores your location, so it usually pays less than full BAH in high-cost areas. For 2026, BAH RC/T ranges from roughly $812 per month for a junior enlisted member without dependents to over $3,035 for a senior officer with dependents.6Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Different Types of BAH
Two narrower rates exist for specific situations. Partial BAH is a small payment for members without dependents who live in government quarters. BAH-Differential covers members in single-type government quarters who pay court-ordered child support at or above the BAH-Diff rate for their pay grade.6Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Different Types of BAH Neither is common for a Guard member on typical orders.
What Determines the Dollar Amount
Three variables set your monthly figure:
- Pay grade. Higher rank pays a higher allowance. Promotions raise your BAH automatically.
- Geographic location. The military surveys rents, utilities, and housing types by ZIP code area. San Francisco pays far more than a low-cost rural area.7Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Basic Allowance for Housing
- Dependency status. A spouse, children, or other recognized dependents raise your rate above the without-dependents figure.
Under federal law, the Secretary of Defense sets BAH each year based on the cost of adequate civilian housing at comparable income in the same area. If your area’s rate drops from one year to the next, you keep the higher amount you already had, as long as you stay at the same duty station, your pay grade does not decrease, and your dependency status does not change.7Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Basic Allowance for Housing
Which ZIP Code the Military Uses
This trips up a lot of Guard members. The ZIP code that drives your rate depends on the order type.
- Temporary duty (TDY) orders: BAH is based on the home-of-record ZIP code shown on your orders. If it is wrong, the orders themselves have to be amended before finance can correct anything.
- Permanent change of station (PCS) orders: BAH is based on the ZIP code of the installation you are assigned to.
- Reserve component generally: For Guard and Reserve members not on PCS orders, BAH uses the home-of-residence ZIP code.10Ask DFAS. BAH Rates
BAH During Basic Training and Deployments
Guard members shipping to basic training and advanced individual training (or One Station Unit Training) are on active duty orders that normally run past 30 days. Members with dependents are generally eligible for full BAH at their home-of-record ZIP code during that period, which keeps the family’s housing costs covered. Single members without dependents living in training barracks typically do not receive full BAH.
During a Title 10 deployment, BAH continues without interruption at the rate tied to your home residence, letting many Guard members keep paying the mortgage or rent on their civilian home. An unaccompanied service member stationed overseas keeps BAH pegged to the dependent’s U.S. residence ZIP code.11The Official Army Benefits Website. Starting and Keeping Your BAH
To turn BAH on, complete the BAH Authorization and Dependency Declaration form (historically DA Form 5960). It collects your residential address and dependent information. Common supporting documents:
- Certified marriage certificate to verify a spouse.
- Birth certificates for children listed as dependents.
- Proof of housing costs: a mortgage statement, property deed, or signed lease. Some branches also require renters to show monthly payment proof for each month starting with the month your orders are issued.12United States Marine Corps Flagship. Updates to Housing Allowance Policies Under Specific Circumstances for Reserve Component Marines Without Dependents
Submit the packet to your unit finance office or S-1. Guard members also recertify BAH eligibility every year as part of the Personnel and Finance Records Review, with the end date set one year from the begin date.13IPPS-A. Basic Allowance for Housing Recertification Job Aid Missing the recertification window can stop your housing payments until the paperwork catches up, so mark the date.
Once your paperwork clears, check your Leave and Earnings Statement. The Entitlements column shows the BAH amount, and initial payments usually appear within one to two pay cycles after your active duty start date. If the rate looks wrong, tell finance right away. Catching an error early beats repaying an overpayment later.
