Does the Honda Prologue Still Qualify for the Tax Credit?

The Honda Prologue no longer qualifies for the federal clean vehicle tax credit if you buy it now. Congress ended the credit for any vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025, under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed on July 4, 2025.1Internal Revenue Service. If you bought a Prologue before October 1, 2025, you can still claim up to $7,500 on your 2025 tax return, or you may have already received it as a discount at the dealership.

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 had scheduled the credit to run through 2032. The 2025 law cut that short by adding a termination provision to Section 30D of the Internal Revenue Code.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 30D – Clean Vehicle Credit The same law ended the Section 45W commercial clean vehicle credit that leasing companies had used to pass savings to lessees, so leasing a new Prologue produces no federal tax benefit either.1Internal Revenue Service. If You Signed a Contract Before the Deadline

Delivery date is not the deciding factor. Acquisition is. The IRS treats you as having acquired the vehicle by September 30, 2025 if you entered into a binding written contract and made a payment on or before that date.3Internal Revenue Service. Keep the signed contract and your payment receipt.

How to Claim the Credit If You Bought in Time

There are two paths, and which one applies depends on what happened at the dealership.

Point-of-Sale Transfer

If the dealer knocked up to $7,500 off the price at purchase, you transferred the credit to them. The dealer submitted the transaction through the IRS Energy Credits Online system, which confirmed the vehicle’s eligibility in real time.4Internal Revenue Service. How to Claim a Clean Vehicle Tax Credit A key advantage of this route: if the credit amount exceeded your actual tax liability for the year, the excess was not clawed back.5Internal Revenue Service. Claiming on Your Tax Return

If you did not transfer the credit at the dealership, claim it by attaching Form 8936 to your federal return for the year you took delivery.4Internal Revenue Service. Claimed this way, the credit is non-refundable. It reduces your tax bill dollar for dollar, but only down to zero, and any unused portion does not carry to the next year.3Internal Revenue Service. Credits for New Clean Vehicles Purchased in 2023 or After If your total federal tax liability is $5,000, your credit is $5,000 and the remaining $2,500 is lost. That is why the point-of-sale transfer was the better option for buyers with lower liability.

Income Limits Still Apply

Buying before the deadline is not enough on its own. Your modified adjusted gross income must fall below one of these thresholds:3Internal Revenue Service. Credits for New Clean Vehicles Purchased in 2023 or After

  • $300,000 for married filing jointly or a surviving spouse
  • $225,000 for head of household
  • $150,000 for all other filers

You can use your modified adjusted gross income from either the year you took delivery or the year before, whichever is lower. If you meet the limit in either year, you qualify.3Internal Revenue Service. Credits for New Clean Vehicles Purchased in 2023 or After

What Happens If Your Income Exceeds the Limit

If you took the credit at the dealership as a point-of-sale transfer and your income for the applicable year ends up over the threshold, you must repay the full credit to the IRS. The repayment is added to your tax for the year the vehicle was placed in service, reported on Form 8936 with your Form 1040.5Internal Revenue Service. The Home Charger Credit Is Still Open

A separate credit for charging equipment survives, though not for long. Section 30C provides a credit equal to 30 percent of the cost of installing a qualified charger, up to $1,000 for residential property. The charger has to be installed in an eligible census tract, which covers low-income communities and rural (non-urban) areas as defined by the Census Bureau.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 30C – Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit The Department of Energy publishes a tool to check whether an address falls in an eligible tract. The credit ends for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, so a Prologue owner planning a Level 2 home installation should move before that date.

State and Local Programs

State-level programs are now the main source of financial help on a new Prologue. Amounts and eligibility vary widely: some states offer rebates or tax credits reaching several thousand dollars, others offer nothing, and eligibility often turns on household income, vehicle price, or battery size. Some states also charge higher annual registration fees for electric vehicles to offset lost gas-tax revenue. Check your state’s energy office or department of revenue for current programs.
