Does Standard Deduction Reduce MAGI? No, Here’s What Does

No, the standard deduction does not reduce your MAGI. Modified Adjusted Gross Income is built from your Adjusted Gross Income plus certain add-backs, and the standard deduction is subtracted at a later step on the return, after MAGI is already locked in.1Internal Revenue Service. Deductions for Individuals: What They Mean and the Difference Between Standard and Itemized Deductions That matters because MAGI, not taxable income, controls whether you can contribute to a Roth IRA, claim the student loan interest deduction, qualify for a Premium Tax Credit, and more.

Why the Standard Deduction Sits Outside the MAGI Formula

A federal return runs on two tracks that people tend to blur together. One track determines eligibility for income-sensitive tax benefits. The other calculates the tax you owe. The standard deduction only appears on the second track.

AGI is the number on line 11 of Form 1040, calculated after above-the-line adjustments like HSA contributions and retirement plan deferrals are subtracted from total income.2Internal Revenue Service. Adjusted Gross Income MAGI starts from AGI and adds specific items back. Only after both of those numbers are fixed do you subtract the standard deduction to reach taxable income. The IRS defines the standard deduction as “a specific dollar amount that reduces the amount of taxable income,” and taxable income is a different figure at a different stage.1Internal Revenue Service. So even though the 2026 standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, none of that subtraction reaches MAGI.3Internal Revenue Service. How MAGI Is Actually Built

MAGI is AGI with certain items added back, and the exact add-backs depend on which benefit is in play. There is no single universal MAGI. For Roth and traditional IRA eligibility, you take AGI and add back:4Internal Revenue Service. Modified Adjusted Gross Income

  • Traditional IRA deductions claimed on Schedule 1
  • Student loan interest deductions claimed on Schedule 1
  • Foreign earned income or housing exclusions from Form 2555
  • Savings bond interest excluded under the education exclusion
  • Employer-provided adoption benefits excluded from income

For the Premium Tax Credit under the Affordable Care Act, the add-backs are different: foreign earned income, tax-exempt interest, and nontaxable Social Security benefits.4Internal Revenue Service. Modified Adjusted Gross Income Tax-exempt municipal bond interest counts for ACA purposes but not for IRA purposes.

What every version has in common: the standard deduction is not an add-back, an input, or a subtraction anywhere in the formula. It simply is not part of MAGI.

What Actually Lowers Your MAGI

Since MAGI starts with AGI, the only way to move it is to lower AGI through pre-tax contributions and above-the-line deductions that are not later added back.

Two accounts do most of the work:

Self-employed retirement plans like SEP-IRAs and solo 401(k)s also reduce AGI and are not added back for most MAGI purposes.

Some above-the-line deductions look like MAGI reducers but are not. Traditional IRA contributions and student loan interest lower AGI, then get added right back when you calculate MAGI for the benefits they matter for.4Internal Revenue Service. Modified Adjusted Gross Income Deducting a traditional IRA contribution does not help you slip under the Roth IRA income limit, because that same contribution is added back in the Roth MAGI calculation.

If you are close to a MAGI threshold, maximizing 401(k) and HSA contributions is usually the single most effective move.

MAGI Thresholds That Matter in 2026

Crossing a MAGI line by a few dollars can wipe out a benefit. These are the main thresholds where the answer to the standard-deduction question actually costs money.

Roth IRA Contributions

Roth IRA eligibility phases out for 2026 between $153,000 and $168,000 for single filers, and between $242,000 and $252,000 for married couples filing jointly.5Internal Revenue Service. 401(k) Limit Increases to $24,500 for 2026, IRA Limit Increases to $7,500 Above the top of the range, direct contributions are not allowed. The standard deduction offers no path under these limits.

Traditional IRA Deductibility

If you are covered by a workplace retirement plan, the traditional IRA deduction phases out for 2026 between $81,000 and $91,000 for single filers, and between $129,000 and $149,000 for married couples filing jointly where the contributing spouse has coverage. If only your spouse has a workplace plan, the phase-out is $242,000 to $252,000.5Internal Revenue Service. 401(k) Limit Increases to $24,500 for 2026, IRA Limit Increases to $7,500

Student Loan Interest Deduction

The up-to-$2,500 student loan interest deduction phases out based on MAGI. For single filers, the phase-out begins around $85,000 and ends at $100,000.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 221 – Interest on Education Loans Whether you take the standard deduction or itemize is irrelevant, because the phase-out attaches to MAGI, not taxable income.

Premium Tax Credit

Eligibility for ACA marketplace subsidies turns on household MAGI compared to the federal poverty level.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 36B – Refundable Credit for Coverage Under a Qualified Health Plan For this credit, MAGI adds tax-exempt interest and nontaxable Social Security benefits to AGI.4Internal Revenue Service. Net Investment Income Tax

A 3.8% surtax applies once MAGI passes $200,000 for single filers or $250,000 for married couples filing jointly.9Internal Revenue Service. Net Investment Income Tax These thresholds are not indexed for inflation. The standard deduction will not carry you back under them.

What It Costs to Get MAGI Wrong

Treating the standard deduction as if it lowered MAGI is a common source of expensive mistakes.

Contributing to a Roth IRA when your MAGI is too high creates an excess contribution, taxed at 6% for every year it stays in the account.10Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Topics – IRA Contribution Limits You can escape the penalty by withdrawing the excess and its earnings before your tax return due date, including extensions. If you miss that window, the 6% compounds annually until you fix it.

Claiming a Premium Tax Credit based on a MAGI figure that turns out to be too low means repaying the credit when you file. If the underpayment is treated as a substantial understatement of income tax, an accuracy-related penalty of 20% of the underpayment can apply on top.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6662 – Imposition of Accuracy-Related Penalty on Underpayments

The pattern behind most of these errors is the same: someone assumes an AGI of, say, $95,000 drops to roughly $79,000 after the standard deduction, then acts as if that lower number governs Roth eligibility or a credit phase-out. It does not. MAGI is set before the standard deduction ever enters the calculation, and the IRS does not treat the misunderstanding as a defense.
