SSI does not deposit on weekends, and it does not deposit on federal holidays. When the first of the month falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the Social Security Administration issues your payment on the preceding business day, so the money arrives early rather than late.1eCFR. 20 CFR 416.502 – Manner of Payment2Social Security Administration. When Will I Get My Benefits If the Payment Date Falls on a Weekend or Holiday The deposit still counts as that month’s benefit. An April 1 payment is your April benefit; a July 31 payment issued because August 1 is a Saturday is your August benefit.
Because January 1 is always New Year’s Day, the January SSI payment is always issued at the end of the prior December.3Social Security Administration. Latest Cost-of-Living Adjustment
2026 Months Where SSI Arrives Early
Based on the SSA’s published 2026 schedule, five months have a weekend or holiday on the first, which shifts the deposit backward:4Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026
- January 2026 benefit: paid Wednesday, December 31, 2025 (January 1 is New Year’s Day).
- February 2026 benefit: paid Friday, January 30 (February 1 is Sunday).
- March 2026 benefit: paid Friday, February 27 (March 1 is Sunday).
- August 2026 benefit: paid Friday, July 31 (August 1 is Saturday).
- November 2026 benefit: paid Friday, October 30 (November 1 is Sunday).
- January 2027 benefit: paid Wednesday, December 30, 2026 (January 1, 2027 is New Year’s Day).
Every other month in 2026 pays on the first as usual. April, May, June, July, September, October, and December each have a weekday first.
When Two SSI Deposits Land in the Same Month
The early-payment rule creates months with two deposits. In 2026 that happens at least three times:
- July 2026: the regular July payment on July 1, plus the early August payment on July 31.
- October 2026: the regular October payment on October 1, plus the early November payment on October 30.
- December 2026: the regular December payment on December 1, plus the early January 2027 payment on December 30.
Two deposits in one month can push your bank balance past the SSI resource limit. For 2026, countable resources cannot exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple, and the SSA checks resources on the first of each month.5Social Security Administration. SSI Eligibility Requirements Cash and bank account balances are counted. If your countable resources exceed the limit by more than $50, the SSA will generally assess an overpayment and may reduce future benefits to recover the excess.6Social Security Administration. SSI Overpayment Waiver When Recipient’s Countable Resources Exceed the Limit
The practical fix is to spend down the extra deposit on necessities before the first of the next month. Rent, utilities, food, and other regular bills all count. What matters is your countable resource balance at the start of the month, not what came in during the month.
What “Early” Means at Your Bank
The Treasury releases payment information on the same day for everyone, but the exact moment funds become available depends on your financial institution. Some banks post the deposit at midnight; others show it as pending until business hours begin. If someone else’s deposit clears before yours, that is almost always a difference in bank processing speed, not a problem with your payment.
Federal law now requires nearly all SSI payments to be made electronically, either by direct deposit to a bank account or through the Direct Express Debit Mastercard issued by the U.S. Treasury.7Social Security Administration. If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive
Start with your bank. Delays are frequently on the financial institution’s side rather than the SSA’s.9Social Security Administration. After that, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit your local field office with your Social Security number and current banking details. If the payment is confirmed as due, the SSA will issue a replacement.9Social Security Administration. How Do I Report a Missing Payment
One boundary worth naming: the weekend rule described here governs SSI’s first-of-the-month schedule. If you also receive Social Security retirement, disability, or survivor benefits, that payment follows a separate schedule and lands on a different day.4Social Security Administration.
