Does Social Security Have an Official App?

There is no official Social Security app for general account management. The Social Security Administration runs its personalized services through a browser-based portal called “my Social Security,” which works the same on a phone, tablet, or computer without anything to download. The SSA does publish one narrow mobile app, but it exists solely for Supplemental Security Income wage reporting. Any other app in the app stores claiming to manage your benefits is not from the SSA.

Why the SSA Uses a Web Portal Instead of an App

“my Social Security” is the SSA’s central hub for personalized services. It’s where you review your lifetime earnings, estimate future benefits, manage payments, and handle most tasks that would otherwise require a phone call or office visit.1Social Security Administration. Popular Online Services Because it runs in a web browser, you reach it the same way on any device by going to ssa.gov and signing in. Nothing to install, nothing to update.

That design choice matters for a practical reason: if you’re looking for an SSA app in the App Store or Google Play and finding a lot of options, none of the general-purpose ones are real. The agency simply doesn’t publish one.

The One Real SSA Mobile App

The SSA does maintain a single downloadable app: the SSA Mobile Wage Reporting app, available in the Apple App Store and Google Play.2Social Security Administration. SSI recipients are required to report wages during the first six days of each month to avoid incorrect payments.3Social Security Administration. Mobile Wage Reporting App – Instructions The app is faster than the alternatives for that one job. It doesn’t do anything else. You can’t check your benefit amount, change your address, or manage payments through it. For everything beyond SSI wage reporting, you’re back to the web portal.

What the my Social Security Portal Actually Does

If you haven’t started collecting benefits yet, the portal’s main draw is your Social Security Statement, which lists every year of earnings your employers reported and gives personalized estimates of your future retirement, disability, and survivors benefits.4Social Security Administration. Get Your Social Security Statement Checking it now and then is worth the few minutes. Errors in your earnings record cut directly into your benefit amount, and older mistakes are harder to correct.

The portal also includes a retirement estimator. You can adjust the age you plan to stop working, compare monthly amounts at age 62, at your full retirement age, and at 70, and enter expected future earnings to see the effect.5Social Security Administration. Online Benefits Calculator You can toggle between today’s dollars and inflation-adjusted future dollars.

Once you’re actually collecting, the portal turns into a payment management tool. Signed in, you can:1Social Security Administration. Popular Online Services

  • Set up or change direct deposit
  • Print a proof-of-benefits letter for loan or housing applications

Replacement Social Security cards can be requested online too, but only if you’re a U.S. citizen 18 or older with a driver’s license or state ID from a participating state, a U.S. mailing address, and no changes to your name, date of birth, or other identifying information.6Social Security Administration. Request Your Replacement Social Security Card Online The SSA’s last public count put the online replacement option at 43 states plus the District of Columbia. If your state isn’t in that group, you’ll need to apply in person or by mail.

Tax Withholding on Benefits

Social Security benefits can be subject to federal income tax. If your combined income (half your benefit amount plus any other earnings) exceeds $25,000 filing individually or $32,000 filing jointly, part of your benefits becomes taxable. Through the portal, you can have federal taxes withheld from your monthly payment at 7%, 10%, 12%, or 22%, and you can start, stop, or change that rate any time you sign in.7Social Security Administration. How to Sign In Safely

To use the portal you’ll need to be at least 18 with a Social Security number, and you won’t register directly with the SSA. As of June 7, 2025, sign-in runs entirely through one of two government-approved identity services: Login.gov or ID.me.10Social Security Administration. my Social Security – Create an Account

Both services verify who you are before granting access. Login.gov accepts a U.S. driver’s license, state ID, or passport book, along with your Social Security number and a U.S. phone number or mailing address. You’ll typically photograph the ID document and may be asked for a selfie to confirm the match. If the online photo process doesn’t work, Login.gov offers in-person verification at participating U.S. Post Office locations.11Login.gov. Verify My Identity

Both providers require two-step verification, so every sign-in sends a code to your phone or email in addition to your password.10Social Security Administration. my Social Security – Create an Account Treat the credentials like a bank password. The account holds your full earnings history, benefit amounts, and banking details.

Fake Apps and Account Protection

Search “Social Security” in either app store and you’ll see third-party apps offering to help manage benefits, estimate payments, or contact the SSA. None are official. The SSA warns that criminals routinely impersonate the agency through calls, emails, texts, and social media to steal personal information or money.12Social Security Administration. Protect Yourself from Social Security Scams An unofficial app that asks for your Social Security number or login credentials is one of the easier ways to lose your identity.

The safe pattern is short: use the Mobile Wage Reporting app if you’re an SSI recipient reporting wages, and for everything else type ssa.gov into your browser and sign in there. If you think someone has already accessed your account, you can call 1-800-772-1213 and ask the SSA to block all electronic access to your record. Once the block is on, nobody (including you) can view or change the information online or through the automated phone system until you contact the SSA to have it lifted and verify your identity.13Social Security Administration.
