Sezzle does not report to credit bureaus by default. If you use the standard Pay in 4 plan, your purchases and on-time payments stay off your Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion files. Reporting only happens if you opt in to Sezzle Up, a separate program that shares your payment history with all three bureaus so your Sezzle activity can build a credit record.
What a Standard Sezzle Account Does on Your Credit File
The basic Pay in 4 plan splits your purchase into four installments over six weeks with no interest, and none of that activity is shared with a credit bureau. Your on-time payments won’t lift your score, and a single missed payment on a standard account won’t land directly on your report either.
This is the common pattern for buy now, pay later services. Short-term installment plans don’t function like a revolving credit line, so Sezzle keeps them separate from the accounts bureaus track. For most shoppers using Sezzle at checkout, the transaction leaves no trace on their credit file.
How Sezzle Up Changes the Answer
Sezzle Up is a voluntary program that converts your Sezzle activity into a reported credit account. Once you enroll, Sezzle sends your payment history to Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.1Sezzle Legal. Sezzle Up Terms Every payment is documented, which can build positive history over time.
To qualify, you need to:
- Pay off at least one Sezzle order in full and on time.
- Set a linked bank account as your default payment method.
- Verify your identity with your Social Security number and confirm your personal information in the app.
Credit reporting through Sezzle Up may require a Sezzle Anywhere subscription at $19.99 per month, which also lets you use Sezzle beyond partner stores. Standard accounts without the subscription do not currently have access to credit reporting.2Sezzle Legal. Sezzle Subscription Terms
Opting in means everything gets reported, not just the good months. That trade-off matters, because a late payment through Sezzle Up carries the same weight as one on any other credit account.
What Happens If You Miss a Payment
If you’re enrolled in Sezzle Up, a missed payment gets reported once it’s 30 or more days overdue. It shows up on the next monthly report after crossing that threshold. A payment that fails on January 10 and stays unresolved through the end of February would first appear on your credit report in February, and continue appearing each month until it’s resolved.3Sezzle Help Center. How Does Sezzle Up Impact My Credit The longer it sits, the more it hurts your score.
A reported late payment can stay on your credit file for up to seven years from the date the delinquency began.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports Sezzle Up accounts are not treated any differently from other loans once they appear on your report.
Charge-Offs Reach Collections Either Way
If you miss payments for more than 90 days, Sezzle charges off your account, blocks it from further use, and may send the debt to a third-party collection agency.5Sezzle Help Center. What Is a Charge-Off and Why Do I Still See a Balance With My Sezzle Account After My Account Was Charged-Off This applies whether or not you’re enrolled in Sezzle Up. Any unpaid Sezzle balance can eventually reach collections.
Once a collection agency takes over the debt, that agency can independently report the unpaid balance to all three credit bureaus. A collection account can significantly lower your score and stays on your file for up to seven years from the original delinquency date. Paying it off may update the entry to a “paid” status, but the record of the delinquency itself remains visible for the full period.
Late fees, failed payment fees, and reschedule fees can also stack on top of the balance, but those charges don’t themselves appear on your credit report — only the underlying delinquency does.
Does Applying for Sezzle Hurt Your Score
No. When you sign up or start a new purchase, Sezzle runs a soft credit inquiry to check your eligibility. A soft inquiry doesn’t affect your score and isn’t visible to other lenders reviewing your file. Approval is typically instant, and you only need a valid phone number and a payment method to apply.
Sezzle doesn’t publish a minimum credit score. Because it uses a soft pull rather than a hard inquiry, you can find out whether you qualify without any score impact, unlike a traditional credit card application, which triggers a hard pull that can knock a few points off temporarily.
How Much Sezzle Up Data Actually Counts Right Now
Even with a clean record of on-time payments through Sezzle Up, that data may not carry much weight with lenders today. According to TransUnion, buy now, pay later loan data reported to the bureau is currently visible only to the consumer on their own credit report. Credit scoring models and lenders cannot yet use BNPL data when calculating your score or making lending decisions.6TransUnion. How Do BNPL Missed Payments Impact Your Credit Score
TransUnion has said BNPL data may be incorporated into scoring and lending decisions in the future. The practical upside of Sezzle Up is that it builds a documented payment history now, ready for when scoring models catch up. The downside works the same way: any late payments reported through Sezzle Up would already be sitting on your file when lenders start factoring them in.
Fixing an Error That Was Reported
If Sezzle Up reports something inaccurate, such as marking a payment late that you paid on time, you can dispute it directly with Sezzle. Submit the dispute through the Sezzle contact form, choose the credit reporting category, and include your Sezzle Credit Account number (shown on your credit report) along with your residential address.7Sezzle Help Center. How Do I Dispute Information on My Credit Report Sezzle investigates and notifies you of the results. If an error is confirmed, they correct it with the bureaus and can provide a clarification letter to any prospective creditor.
You also have the right under federal law to dispute the information directly with the credit bureau. The bureau must investigate within 30 days and remove or correct anything it can’t verify.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Filing with both Sezzle and the bureau at the same time can speed the correction along.
