Sezzle does not check credit in the way traditional lenders do. When you sign up for an account or place an order, Sezzle runs a soft credit inquiry to verify your identity and eligibility, and a soft inquiry has no effect on your FICO or VantageScore.1Sezzle Legal. Credit Pull Authorization There is no hard pull at approval, so your score stays exactly where it was before you applied.2Sezzle. Pay in 4 at Checks
Soft Pull vs. Hard Pull
A soft inquiry lets a company review limited credit information without touching your score. Only you can see soft inquiries on your credit report; lenders reviewing your file cannot. A hard inquiry is the deeper review that happens when you apply for a mortgage, auto loan, or new credit card. Hard inquiries stay on your report for up to two years and can shave a few points off your score.
Sezzle uses the soft version at every stage: initial signup, each new order, and any later account review. The company states plainly that it does not perform hard credit checks for approval decisions.2Sezzle. Pay in 4 at Checks Federal law requires any company accessing your credit information to have a permissible purpose for doing so, and the soft pull satisfies that requirement without the deeper review associated with extending a traditional line of credit.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports
What Sezzle Actually Checks at Signup
To open a Sezzle account you must be at least 18 (or the legal age in your area), have a valid U.S. or Canadian phone number, a verified email, and a payment method on file such as a debit card, credit card, or bank account.4Sezzle Legal. User Agreement During sign-up, Sezzle also collects the last four digits of your Social Security number to confirm your identity. This step exists because federal anti-money-laundering rules require financial service providers to verify who their customers are before opening accounts.5eCFR. 31 CFR 1023.220 – Customer Identification Programs for Broker-Dealers
None of this triggers a hard pull. The soft inquiry runs in the background, and if your information checks out, account creation usually takes a few minutes.
How Each Order Is Approved
Having an account does not guarantee every purchase will be approved. Sezzle evaluates each transaction separately at checkout, weighing the order total against your current spending limit, your repayment history on past Sezzle orders, and whether your linked payment method has enough to cover the first installment of 25 percent.6Sezzle Legal. Opening Account Disclosure
Spending limits start relatively low and rise as you build a track record of on-time payments with Sezzle. A strong external credit score will not override a low internal limit, and a weak one will not sink an order that fits inside it. The soft inquiry stays soft either way.
When Sezzle Does Report to Credit Bureaus
Regular Sezzle activity is not reported to the credit bureaus. On-time payments will not build your credit, and missed payments will not damage it. That changes only if you opt into Sezzle Up.
To qualify for Sezzle Up, you need to have paid off at least one order on time, link a bank account as your default payment method, and verify your full Social Security number.1Sezzle Legal. Credit Pull Authorization Once enrolled, Sezzle reviews your account at the end of each month and reports your payment status to Equifax, TransUnion, Experian, and Innovis.7Sezzle. How Does Sezzle Up Impact My Credit
According to Sezzle, users enrolled in the program have seen an average credit score increase of about 20 points within four months. The reporting cuts both ways. Payments that go more than 30 days overdue can appear on your credit report and pull your score down. If your budget does not reliably cover every installment, staying out of Sezzle Up keeps missed payments off your credit file.
Sezzle Anywhere Does Not Change the Answer
Sezzle Anywhere is a reusable virtual Visa card that lets you use Pay in 4 outside Sezzle’s partner network. Activating the card does not trigger an additional credit check, and Sezzle Anywhere does not report to credit bureaus by default. Reporting only happens if you separately enroll in Sezzle Up, which works as an add-on to either standard Sezzle or Sezzle Anywhere.
