Does Sallie Mae Have a Grace Period and How Long Is It?

The Sallie Mae grace period is six months for most borrowers. It starts the day you graduate, withdraw, or drop below half-time enrollment, and during those six months you are not required to make full principal-and-interest payments on the Smart Option Student Loan, Sallie Mae’s main product for undergraduate and graduate students.1Sallie Mae. Undergraduate Student Loans Interest keeps accruing the entire time, though, so what you do during those six months shapes what you owe when real payments begin.

How Long the Grace Period Lasts

Six months is the standard for the Smart Option Student Loan, whether you borrowed as an undergraduate or a graduate student.1Sallie Mae. Undergraduate Student Loans

Medical and dental borrowers who took out the Sallie Mae Residency and Relocation Loan get something different. If you graduate, your grace period runs up to 36 months to cover residency and fellowship. If you withdraw or drop below half-time instead of graduating, the grace period on that loan is nine months.2Sallie Mae. Residency and Relocation Loan Information

Your promissory note and the final disclosure statement issued before your loan funds were sent out spell out the exact terms. If you are not sure which loan you have, your Sallie Mae online account and billing statement will show it.3Sallie Mae. Billing Statement Glossary

What Starts the Clock

The six-month countdown begins the day you stop meeting the enrollment requirements in your loan agreement. Graduating, withdrawing, taking a leave of absence, or dropping below half-time all trigger it.3Sallie Mae. Billing Statement Glossary

You don’t have to tell Sallie Mae yourself. Your school reports enrollment changes to the National Student Clearinghouse, which passes the information to lenders and servicers.4National Student Clearinghouse. Education Compliance Once Sallie Mae gets confirmation that you are no longer at least half-time, your account updates to show the separation. The date your school reported is called the Separation Date and appears on your billing statement.

What Happens to Your Balance During Grace

Interest on a Sallie Mae private loan accrues daily from the moment the funds are sent to your school, not from the day you enter repayment. That is a different setup from subsidized federal loans, where the government covers interest while you are in school and during grace.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Tips for Student Loan Borrowers So during your grace period, interest keeps piling on.

How much of that interest you absorb depends on the in-school repayment option you picked when you first borrowed. That choice stays in effect throughout grace.1Sallie Mae. Undergraduate Student Loans

  • Interest repayment: you pay the monthly interest in full, so your balance does not grow.
  • Fixed repayment: you pay a flat $25 each month, and any interest beyond that goes unpaid.
  • Deferred repayment: you pay nothing, and all the interest accumulates.

When the grace period ends, Sallie Mae capitalizes any unpaid interest. That means the interest gets added to your original principal to create a new, larger balance, and future interest is calculated on that higher number.6Sallie Mae. Graduate School Loan Terms Borrow $20,000, let $2,000 of interest accrue, and you start repayment on $22,000. From there, you pay interest on $22,000 for the rest of the loan.

Making voluntary interest payments during grace, even if you are on the deferred option, cuts down what capitalizes. Nothing stops you from paying early.

When the First Full Payment Hits

As your grace period winds down, Sallie Mae generates your first billing statement and sends it by mail or email based on your communication preferences. The statement lists your monthly payment, your interest rate, and your due date. Check your online account for the exact first due date, since it keys off your specific separation date.7Sallie Mae. When Do You Have to Start Paying Back Student Loans

Before that first statement arrives, confirm that your contact information and bank details are current in your profile. Payments can be made through the online portal or by mailing a check with the payment coupon. Your 10-digit Sallie Mae account number sits in the top right corner of the billing statement and identifies your loan on everything.3Sallie Mae. Billing Statement Glossary

Signing up for automatic monthly payments from a bank account knocks 0.25% off your interest rate. The discount only applies during active repayment and only while the automatic withdrawal succeeds each month. A failed payment, such as from insufficient funds, can suspend or revoke it.8Sallie Mae. Automatic Debit Authorization Application

Payments are applied in a set order: outstanding fees first, then accrued interest, then principal.9Sallie Mae. How We Allocate and Apply Your Student Loan Payments If you have late fees or a large interest buildup, your first payments may not touch principal right away. Paying more than the monthly minimum helps drive down principal faster.

If You Cannot Afford the First Payment

Call Sallie Mae before you miss a payment. According to the company’s response to a Senate investigation, options for struggling borrowers include extended grace periods, short-term hardship forbearances, temporary interest rate reductions, and in some cases permanent rate reductions.10U.S. Senate. Sallie Mae Response to Private Student Loan Lender Investigation

Interest keeps accruing during forbearance and can capitalize when the forbearance ends, which raises your balance the same way the end of the grace period does. Asking for help before you fall behind matters, because once an account is delinquent fewer options may be available.

Going Back to School Before Grace Ends

If you re-enroll at least half-time before your grace period runs out, your loan generally returns to in-school status. Your school reports the enrollment change through the National Student Clearinghouse, and Sallie Mae updates your account. The in-school repayment option you originally picked resumes, and when you leave school again a new grace period starts based on the updated separation date.3Sallie Mae. Two Things the Grace Period Does Not Do

If you borrowed with a cosigner and are counting the months until you can release them, grace period payments do not count. Sallie Mae requires 12 on-time principal-and-interest payments before you can apply for cosigner release, and payments made during school, the separation period, or grace, including the $25 fixed payments or interest-only payments, are excluded from that count.11Sallie Mae. Cosigner Release Application You also have to be current on all your Sallie Mae loans with no payments 30 or more days past due in the last 12 months. The earliest you can realistically apply is about a year after full repayment starts.

Active-duty service members have a separate track outside the grace period. Sallie Mae offers deferments and forbearances during qualifying military service under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, covering full-time active duty, reservists on federal active duty, and National Guard members on federal orders for more than 30 days, and extending the SCRA interest rate benefit for an additional year after service ends. Cosigners on a loan with an SCRA-eligible service member can also benefit.12Sallie Mae. Tips for Service Members
