Does Progressive Cover You in Mexico? Tiers, Costs, and Bail Bonds

A standard Progressive auto policy does not cover you while driving in Mexico, but Progressive does sell Mexico auto insurance through its partner MexPro, a broker that places policies with insurers licensed in Mexico. Coverage is available for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, RVs, trucks, trailers, and ATVs, in terms running from a single day up to a full year.1Progressive. Mexico Auto Insurance

Why Your Regular Progressive Policy Stops at the Border

Mexican law requires every driver to carry liability insurance issued by a company licensed in Mexico. The Mexican government does not recognize U.S. or Canadian auto policies as valid proof of financial responsibility, no matter how much coverage they provide at home.2MexPro. Mexico Auto Insurance If you are in an accident without a Mexican policy, police can detain you at the scene, impound the vehicle, or hold you until you can show you can pay for damages.3Progressive. Some U.S. insurers offer limited extensions that reach 25 to 100 miles into Mexico, but those typically cover only physical damage to your own vehicle. They do not satisfy Mexico’s mandatory liability requirement and do not include the legal assistance and bail bond support a Mexican policy provides.4Baja Bound Insurance Services. How Progressive’s Mexico Coverage Works

Progressive does not underwrite the policy itself. It routes you to MexPro, which Progressive describes as a specialized broker for Mexican auto insurance.3Progressive. The Three Coverage Tiers

Progressive’s Mexico policy comes in three tiers, and every tier includes roadside assistance.1Progressive. Mexico Auto Insurance

  • Basic includes liability, travel assistance, medical payments, and legal assistance. It does not cover physical damage to your vehicle. For vehicles more than 20 years old, only liability is available.
  • Standard adds collision and theft protection to everything in Basic.
  • Extended adds vandalism and partial theft coverage, the option to have your vehicle repaired in the United States, and fixed deductibles rather than the percentage-based deductibles that are standard in Mexican insurance.

Progressive suggests Basic for day trips or older vehicles, Standard for longer trips in newer vehicles, and Extended for months-long stays or frequent cross-border travelers.1Progressive. Mexico Auto Insurance

What It Costs

Progressive lists the average daily rate for Standard coverage (liability, collision, and theft) at $41.08, and a liability-only policy with $300,000 in coverage at about $25 per day.1Progressive. Mexico Auto Insurance The daily rate falls sharply on longer terms. MexPro’s own example: full coverage for a 2013 Honda Accord valued at $16,000 averages about $26 per day on a three-day trip but roughly $1.20 per day on an annual policy.5MexPro. Pricing turns on the vehicle’s value and type, the tier you pick, the length of the policy, and your age. Drivers under 21 or over 80 pay more.5MexPro. Legal Aid, Bail Bond, and Roadside Assistance

These built-in features matter more in Mexico than many travelers expect. If an accident involves injuries, death, or significant property damage, authorities generally open a criminal investigation, and police may detain drivers at the scene until fault is established. A valid Mexican policy can serve as the guarantee for bail under Article 31 of the Penal Code.6Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions. Mexico Auto Accident General Information

MexPro policies include 24/7 legal assistance with attorney representation, bail bond support, and personal legal assistance covering situations such as police abuse or problems with a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit. Every policy also includes the MexVisit roadside assistance program, which covers fuel delivery, flat tire service, battery jumpstarts, locksmith service, towing, and lodging if a trip is interrupted. Daily plans include emergency medical evacuation; on six-month and annual policies, that benefit must be purchased separately.7MexPro. Mexico Roadside Assistance

If You Have an Accident

Stay at the scene until authorities arrive, then call the toll-free number on your policy as soon as possible. An adjuster will be dispatched to help file the claim report.1Progressive. Mexico Auto Insurance The accident must be reported to the adjuster or claims center before you leave Mexico, or coverage can be voided.6Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions. Rentals and the Vehicle Import Permit

Progressive does not cover rental vehicles for Mexico travel. If you rent in Mexico, buy insurance through the rental agency. If you rent in the U.S. and plan to drive into Mexico, check with the rental company first, since many U.S. agencies prohibit or restrict cross-border travel.3Progressive. Insurance is also separate from the Temporary Vehicle Import Permit. If you drive beyond Mexico’s free zone — roughly 12 to 16 miles south of the border, plus the western half of Sonora and the entire Baja Peninsula — you need a permit from Banjercito, the Mexican government agency that issues them.8Progressive. Driving to Mexico Requirements MexPro does not assist with the permit, though proof of Mexican insurance is one of the documents required to get one.9MexPro. Mexico Vehicle Import Permit

Driving Uninsured in Mexico

Depending on the state, liability costs after an accident can run from $300,000 to $500,000.2MexPro. Mexico Auto Insurance An uninsured driver in a serious accident faces potential detention by the Ministerio Público for an initial investigation, vehicle impoundment, and possible criminal charges; in fatal accidents, that can include homicidio culposo, or negligent homicide. Uninsured foreign drivers are often classified as flight risks, which makes bail harder to obtain.10Sanborns Insurance.
