Does Pre-Approval Hurt Your Credit? Soft Pulls and Rate-Shopping Windows

Pre-approval does not hurt your credit in most cases. Lenders use a soft credit inquiry to pre-qualify or pre-approve you, and soft inquiries have zero effect on your credit score. A hard inquiry — the kind that can drop your score by about five points or less — usually happens later, only if you accept the offer and submit a formal application. Mortgages are the main exception, because lenders often run a hard pull to issue the pre-approval letter itself.

Why a Pre-Approval Soft Pull Doesn’t Move Your Score

When a credit card issuer or personal loan lender pre-approves you, it runs a soft pull to check whether you meet its basic criteria. Scoring models ignore soft inquiries entirely because they aren’t tied to an actual request for new debt, so your score stays exactly the same no matter how many soft pulls occur.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Does Requesting My Credit Report Hurt My Credit Score?

The Fair Credit Reporting Act allows companies to access limited data — your name, address, and general credit standing — for prescreened credit or insurance offers without pulling your full report.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b: Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Those are the “pre-approved” mailings and online offers you see from credit card companies. They happen without any action on your part, and you can ignore or discard them without any credit consequences.

For credit cards, the pre-approval offer itself is based on a soft pull. A hard inquiry only occurs if you accept the offer and complete the full application.3Experian. Hard Inquiry vs. Soft Inquiry: What’s the Difference? Most personal loan lenders follow the same pattern: the initial pre-qualification is a soft pull, and the hard pull follows only when you choose to move forward.

The Mortgage Exception

Mortgage pre-approvals work differently. Because a mortgage lender needs to verify your full financial picture before issuing a pre-approval letter, it often runs a hard inquiry during the pre-approval stage itself rather than waiting for a formal application.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. When Will a Lender Run a Credit Check or Obtain a Copy of My Credit Report?

That doesn’t mean rate-shopping punishes you. The CFPB has confirmed that mortgage shoppers can get multiple pre-approvals and official Loan Estimates within a 45-day window with the same credit impact as a single inquiry.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Happens If You Turn a Pre-Approval Into a Real Application

Once you decide to go forward, the lender pulls your full credit report to make a final lending decision. That hard inquiry shows up on your credit file for the next two years.6Experian. How Long Do Hard Inquiries Stay on Your Credit Report?

The score hit is small. A single hard inquiry lowers your credit score by about five points or less, and if you have a strong credit history the drop may be even smaller.7myFICO. Does Checking Your Credit Score Lower It? New credit inquiries make up roughly 10 percent of your overall FICO score, so a single pull is a small piece of an already small category.8myFICO. How Are FICO Scores Calculated?

The effect also fades quickly. Although the inquiry sits on your report for two years, FICO scores only factor in hard inquiries from the previous 12 months, and the score impact often disappears within a few months.6Experian. How Long Do Hard Inquiries Stay on Your Credit Report? VantageScore models may consider inquiries from the previous 24 months, but the practical effect is similarly short-lived.

Where inquiries cause real trouble is when they pile up. Several hard inquiries in a short period, outside of rate-shopping windows, signal that you may be taking on a lot of new debt at once. As a general guideline, accumulating six or more hard inquiries within a two-year period can make it harder to get approved for additional credit.

Rate-Shopping Windows That Let You Compare Offers Safely

Scoring models recognize that comparing offers from multiple lenders is responsible behavior. When several hard inquiries for the same loan type appear within a short window, the algorithm counts them as a single inquiry. The length of the window depends on which scoring model your lender uses:

One important limit: FICO only groups inquiries for mortgages, auto loans, and student loans. If you apply for three different credit cards or three personal loans within the same week, each application counts as a separate hard inquiry under FICO.9Experian. How Many Hard Inquiries Is Too Many? VantageScore’s 14-day window applies more broadly, including to personal loans and credit cards.10VantageScore Solutions, LLC. VantageScore 4.0 User Guide You generally cannot control which model a lender uses, so the safer assumption is FICO rules: limit multiple credit card or personal loan applications to only the ones you genuinely intend to pursue.

The practical takeaway is simple. Once you start shopping for a mortgage or auto loan, do all your rate comparisons within a few weeks rather than spreading them over months.

Before You Authorize Any Credit Check

Ask the lender whether the check will be a soft or hard pull. Many credit card and personal loan lenders offer a soft-pull pre-qualification step, so there is no reason to jump straight to a hard inquiry without first seeing whether you qualify. For mortgages, expect a hard pull at the pre-approval stage, and plan your comparison shopping to stay inside the 45-day window. And if a pre-approval offer arrives that you don’t want, throw it away; it never touched your score in the first place.
